Is Titan's Grip that good?

I find myself wondering if the issue is not with the talent itself, however, but with the itemization of all 2h weapons in the 60 - 70 game.
Remember Demonshear? Look at the speed. It's a 3.8 speed blue 2h sword, obviously tuned for MS warriors.

It didn't always have that speed. It was 2.3 speed when it first entered the game. I know because I used one in my iconoclastic fury 2h build that sacrificed big slam damage for rage generation. (I actually remember it as 2.2 speed, but the screenshot proves me wrong.) There wasn't a ton of hit on plate back then, the PvP epics had barely been introduced, BWL was still cutting edge and so it was still feasible to try and avoid rage starvation by the simple expedient of swinging more often. With Flurry up, Demonshear's 2.3 speed dropped to a satisfying 1.8 or so. This meant swings of a 2h weapon that approached the speed of a one hander.
Right now the only 2h weapons left with a speed that fast are the PvP polearms. You'll notice that, even among polearms, they maintain an anomalous 2.2 speed. Unfortunately, polearms aren't included in the Titan's Grip tooltip, and as such cannot be used with a Titan's Grip fury build as an offhand. Which is a damn shame, because I suspect a 2.2 or faster 2h weapon would go a long way towards minimizing rage starvation for a dual wielding warrior, especially in solid haste gear with Flurry up. An offhand swinging at about 1.l7 speed increases rage generation, increases your specials, and thus helps use the ability to its fullest. The only issue is, does the damage lost from Whirlwinds cost more than the rage generation gives? Does this adversely affect Slam damage? Since there's no way to test a 2.2 speed 2h weapon with Titan's Grip unless Polearms are included, this is beyond my ability to answer. (Also, I'm not in the beta.) The idea seems sound enough, though. (If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.)
It's a fair criticism of this idea to point out that it moves against what seems to be the prevailing trend of Wrath, which is to say trying to make more weapons accessible to more classes and specs. Fast 2h weapons would be, in this view, good for DW fury warriors and no one else. This is a fair criticism, and it may means that the fix for the talent will have to be in the talent itself rather than in itemization.
What I think we'll need to see is a return of fast 2h weapons for offhanding with Titan's Grip. I don't think the talent itself is broken, I think that the vast majority of 2h weapons are itemized for a different use than that which a Titan's Grip warrior will be putting his offhand to: they're not designed for rage generation, but rather for burst damage (from a warrior's perspective) since the main uses for a 2h in current play are PvP or as part of a slam rotation. Failing this itemization change, I'd have to say it makes more since to use Titan's Grip to main hand a 2h weapon for stats and high damage while offhanding a fast 1h weapon for rage gen. Even with the current amount of hit on gear (and with hit obviously going up as more hit rating will be needed at 80 to get the same results as we get now at 70) missing too often with two 4.0 or slower weapons seems like a death sentence. I can forsee a lot of weapon switching macros popping up.
Still, we've been promised more work on warriors in the beta, so hopefully this won't turn into another rage normalization kerfuffle. Either we need to see tweaks to the talent to make it rage friendlier, or we need to see gear fill in that gap.

Here is a thought to consider. What is there that says you have to use two twohanders? Whats to stop you from using a 1hander to help with rage generation?
Dawkins Aug 5th 2008 1:38PM
One of the things I've wanted to know is, if you spec swords and just go far enough to get a two hander in your Despair in your mainhand and a Blazeguard in your offhand, would your offhand extra sword procs be good damage from your mainhand? Your bloodthirst and slam will still be doing the same damage but your Whirlwind damage would drop a good 15%, but everything else seems like it would be pretty solid.

I imagine Titan's Grip is one of those skills that will require a lot of test information to get the balance between making it a viable talent but not so overpowered that warriors can smash everything into the ground. It is likely that this talent will get a lot of tinkering as time goes goes on.
Dillon Aug 5th 2008 2:21PM
I think this as well. I'd also follow it up with the erring on the side of underpowered with Warriors since the "old days" and adjusting upwards - which isn't ideal, but certainly better than being strong then having the eventual nerf.
Daedahl Aug 5th 2008 1:40PM
Is it possible they have it balanced for a 2 hander in the main hand, but a 1 hander in the off hand? Has anyone done analysis on that set up? If the specials only are affected by the main hand weapon (is that the case? Haven't played my warrior in a year) then the 2 handed main hand should still have huge cleave, whirlwind and Heroic strikes, while the fast off hand can keep rage generation and flurry up. I'd be interested to see some comparisons between two one-handers, two 2-handers and one of each.

While it will help rage generation some the 1H OH will still suffer from the 20% weapon speed decrease.
Daedahl Aug 5th 2008 1:41PM
Guess I'm not the only one with that thought... someone in Beta has to have tested this... Right?

I think that people are putting their expectations of Titan's Grip too high.
With all things considered (like yellow damage), the talent is a pretty huge dps increase (not to mention stat boost). To balance that, it's only fair that there's also some risk of dps loss. Miss streaks ruining rage and rotation is a GOOD thing in my opinion, because when there's no miss streak, the dps gain is awesome.
Generally if a talent can increase your dps output by 1% it's a damn good talent. We have to remember that when we analyze Titan's Grip.
William Aug 5th 2008 1:54PM
Since we don't know all the gear that will be released in Wrath, maybe there will be something awesome at 80 that makes that talent worth it? Hey I'm a shammy, what am I doing posting here? :D

Now, something I may get smacked around for, but its just a thought..... why not use a two hander in your main hand, and an, I dunno, shield? I realize this doesn't give you 'OMG DAMAGZORS!" or anything, but your still doing the damage of having a two hander equipped, but you have the increased armor and block of a shield.
But back on the topic of DPS and 'rage' starvation, it all depends on the amount of hit on warriors DPS gear. Duel wielding confers a 27% chance to miss if I remember reading right, and anyone one who has ever duel wielded without hit will tell you, that ends up being a lot of misses. I think thats nessecary to counterbalance the sheer amount of rage this talent would be able to put out otherwise, though. The increased speed is a bit nasty, .6 seconds on every three seconds fully talented, but thats also the price you pay for being able to swing around two massive two handers in each hand. All in all, it sounds like it will be an interesting, worthy talent, just not epicly breaking anything.
Khanmora Aug 5th 2008 2:18PM
It's beta, they have not done a 2nd pass nor a polish pass on warriors. There is lots of feedback for them to work with and I'm sure there is a lot of tuning to be done. I'm in wait and see mode for now.
Matthew Rossi Aug 5th 2008 3:01PM
I'm not blowing the panic whistle yet, but a lot of the hype (and I made some of that hype) made Titan's Grip sound better than it's working out to be, so it deserved at least a little mention from me.
Khanmora Aug 5th 2008 5:00PM
I know, you were so cute on the WI show during WWI. "Zomg Titan's Grip!!!" lol I really think they are going to tweak it though, and it will end up being a ton of fun and if not a huge dps boost, I would expect a 5-10% boost to be feasible and have the rage generation to sustain it.
vanye111 Aug 5th 2008 2:22PM
Is this talent possibly not to give Fury warriors more DPS, but to let them use a shield while continuing to use their 2-handers, allowing Fury Warriors more ability to actually Tank? That seems to be one of the aims of Blizzard in this expansion, to spread out tanking amongst the different trees...
Matthew Rossi Aug 5th 2008 3:00PM
I can't imagine anyone would want to tank with a 4.0 or slower weapon (due to Titan's Grip slowing the weapon down by 20% at full talent cost), meaning that tanking 2h weapons would still need to be faster than any 2h weapons currently usable by Titan's Grip.
joggoms Aug 5th 2008 3:02PM
Interesting idea, but too much time between swings and misses would absolutely destroy threat maintenance while tanking.
Irongiant Aug 5th 2008 2:56PM
Blizz is pretty good at getting DPS where they want it, so it seems like they probably intend Titan's grip to provide similar DPS to DW 1h weapons.
What no one has mentioned here are the stat bonuses from 2h weapons. Compare DW Gladiator's Slicer to DW Gladiator's Greatsword. You get 54 more stam, 22 more hit, 40 more Crit, 36 more resilience, and 12 more AP.
Who wouldn't take a talent for just those stat upgrades, forgetting about raw DPS?
Matthew Rossi Aug 5th 2008 2:59PM
No one would.
Raw stats are awesome, but so what if you can't deliver when it counts? If you're not doing any better at DPS then who cares how high your stats are? No one's going to bring you to a raid if you can't put out the DPS just because you have a truckload of stats.
Now, if the stats translate to equivalent or even slightly better DPS, then yes, it's good. I know I'm dying to see Cat's Edge and Jin'Rokh DW, but if in the end it's a DPS decrease due to lower white damage and no rage for specials, then it's not a good talent, no matter how much I gain from stats.
Tcgjarhead Aug 5th 2008 2:43PM
The DPS increase is more dependant on whether or not you have the rage to use your specials.
lower white dmg = less rage = less dps
You better hope those extra stats make up for the possible loss of a good chunk of dps because of rage starvation.
By the way dont forget that with a 1h dual wield spec that you can pick up a weapon spec in arms and SS. There are also a couple of talents you can put more points into in fury to further increase your dps.
Noobbiscuit Aug 5th 2008 3:03PM
Warrior's are already overpowered in PvP so I am sick of people complaining about a class that has the best tank talents, the best in PvP (and weapon itemization), and the best arena partner...just shut up already.
