Blizzard confirms retroactive achievements, when possible

As we said last week, things like reputations and quests are easy to track -- other than dailies, you can't do the same quest twice, so it's easy for Blizzard to know, since day one, which quests you've done. And if a quest takes you to kill, say Onyxia, and you've completed it, then obviously you've got the achievement. Where it gets a little fuzzier is if you haven't done that quest, but you have killed Onyxia -- Blizzard probably doesn't even know yet if they'll do things like look for specific loot from certain bosses in a character's history, or if they'll extrapolate things even farther -- if you're Exalted with Hydraxian Waterlords, does that mean you've cleared MC?
But Tigole does say that Blizzard is making a conscious decision to be as inclusive as possible on these old achievements -- whenever they can, they'll reward credit rather than making you go back to redo old content. That's a good choice -- it does mean that a few people will get angry for not getting the achievement because they killed the boss but didn't do the quest, but the alternative, awarding no retroactive achievements at all, would be even more frustrating.

LFM Onyxia.
Baluki Aug 6th 2008 5:30PM
Once you hit 80, you probably won't need more than one for Onyxia.
Malyfactian Aug 6th 2008 5:49PM
That reminds me; Blizzard needs to seriously consider un-raiding all those old raids (i.e., removing the raid group requirement).
Bunkai Aug 6th 2008 11:21PM
You don't really need more than one for it now, do you?
There are vids of "solo" Ony runs.
Thrush Aug 6th 2008 4:59PM
Cool! I wonder if my character will have a fit of achievement animations when I first log into Wrath.

yea, mmo-champ told us last night :)

The good news is there's a quest to kill nearly every boss in Outland. The attunement quests cover Nightbane (there's a quest to kill Prince too, if Blizz has trouble deciding which is the "end" boss of Kara), Gruul, Vashj, Kael, and Magtheridon.
Then there's the quest to kill Illidan and get your Blessed Medallion of Karabor.
So for those who've cleared the Outland raids, you'll only have to go back and kill Archimonde and Kil'Jaeden for credit. Hyjal is a quick clear and not too much of a pain. KJ will be rough though... even at level 80. Hopefully they'll do the 3.0 patch before Northrend releases and include achievements with it. That way the current end game guilds can get credit for KJ.
As for old world bosses, all of them had a "head" turn in (including ZG and AQ20) aside from Ragnaros that should get you credit. Now, the question is... should exalted Waterlords faction give you credit for Rag? The only way to ding Exalted is to kill Rag or Golemagg. So technically it only proves you killed Golemagg... and since there's no gates in MC, doesn't prove you killed anything before him. On the other hand, it's hard to believe anyone got that far without at least 1 Rag kill. I say Blizz should just give the benefit of the doubt to folks with exalted rep.
Also, if you've done the AQ opening quest chain, that's another slew of boss kills you get credit for. Collecting pages for the blue chain requires a Ragnaros and Onyxia kill, and the red chain requires a Nefarian kill.
And who knows, they might resort to scanning gear for boss drops as well.

Just some idle thoughts:
Complete Tier 2 would confirm you'd killed Nefarion and Onyxia.
Hand of A'dal title confirms Vashj/Kael kills.
I'll probably think of more later, but it seems if Blizz could go through the database of stuff you've gotten over the years, you could get achievement credits for a lot of this stuff. Of course I dumped my Tier 2 set long ago, as others have.
Here's where player housing would have been nice. Armor stands for your old sets, a weapon stand or spot above the fireplace for your Thunderfury. Maybe even heads on the wall for all the heads you've turned in(might be crowded).
Culhag Aug 6th 2008 5:48PM
The Thunderfury questline also requires to kill Ragnaros.
Sadly I don't have anything to prove I killed Rag and Nefarian. We didn't farm them long enough for me to get anything.

This "confirmation" was part of the original statement about achievements. Esp in terms of these older "feats of strength".
Aaron Aug 6th 2008 6:39PM
This is a double edged sword. Suppose that in a guild of 25 active raiders who have killed Kil'Jaeden, only 15 of them actually have Kil'Jaeden loot. Is it fair to give the Kil'Jaeden achievement to those 15, when 10 people who ALSO have killed Kil'Jaeden won't get credit?
This is why I believe that raid boss kills shouldn't be retroactive.
Odok Aug 6th 2008 8:51PM
Punish 25 players or only punish 10?
Logic dictates the latter.

I think something you guys haven't considered is that Blizzard keeps detailed tracking information about pretty much everything your character does, in case the information is needed (IE, you deleted an item, you weren't able to loot an item, etc.). Consider this: They could just run a sniffer that detects GOLD LOOT from bosses. "X received 12 gold 2s 16c from Princess Huhuran" or something like that.
Would make the burden of proof infinately easier on the devs for determining who was present (and contributing) during boss kills.
Of course, this wouldn't be applicable for world events, but for 99% of the game's content, there's your answer.
theRaptor Aug 6th 2008 11:52PM
No way does Blizzard keep that sort of detailed logs. The storage requirements would be insane. The only think we know for sure they track is completed quests, they might however track boss kills.
Blizzard claims they can't tell what loot dropped for a raid when you get a loot bug. Or that they can't restore stolen gold when you get account hacked. So there is no way they are accurately tracking and linking your gold income and expenditure.

I can't help but think of a particular VGCats comic whenever anyone brings up the achievements system. I guess I just don't "get it" ...
WARNING: This comic is extremely NSFW, and inappropriate for children. But it's freakin' hysterical, and spot on.

Please feel free to rate me down if you disagree, but don't the second and third panels essentially define the entire achievements system (and even the raiding end-game itself?)
Gormaggus Aug 7th 2008 5:19AM
The fun part will be getting 50 achievements at once upon logging into wrath :P.
Mongoloid Aug 7th 2008 12:08PM
So do you actually get anything for the acheivments or are they just for bragging rights like in XBox Live?
anjali Aug 8th 2008 5:10PM
I just think that for some of the stuff, maybe they won't worry about retro-activating it because it will force players to actually go back to the old world and get those achievements - thus keeping that part of the world semi-alive. Could be their strategy.
Culhag Aug 8th 2008 4:44AM
Loot check confirmed for all the 25 and 40 man end-bosses.
You need to still have said loot somewhere in your inventory though.
