Exploring Wrath as a Druid: A Feral Cat in Borean Tundra
I've been poking around Northrend the last few days with my Alliance druid and wanted to share some of my discoveries with other Druids wanting to know what to expect in Wrath. I started in on the quest lines in Borean Tundra, one of Wrath's two entry zones, so today's observations are centered on Cat Druid solo experiences. In the future I'll be soloing Howling Fjord in Balance spec and running instances in all four Druid specs, so I will save those observations until then.If you have specific questions about Druids in Wrath, leave a reply on this post and I'll see what I can do about answering them. Remember, I'm not level 80 and I won't be raiding in beta, so try to keep your questions to areas I can play in potentially. First impressions, after the jump!
New Feral Cat Talents
Devs promised increased Cat DPS and from what I can see they delivered.
With five points in Rend and Tear, my Ferocious Bite crits over 76% of the time on a bleeding target (and this is without any points in Master Shapeshifter which would push it into the 80% range.) While soloing, if I open with Pounce, not only do I get the stun, but it puts an 18 second bleed on the mob that gives me FB crits for up to 4k damage. Now that number may not be big for your Cat druids in T6, but for my druid in Outland blues, it's a healthy increase. Regardless of your equipment, a 50% increase in crit chance on your biggest finisher is good news for any Druid.
Three points into King of the Jungle gives Tiger's Fury the extra ability to instantly grant 60 energy every 30 seconds. This works wonders with multiple mobs, big opening combos that drain the energy bar and using powershifting plus Tiger's Fury to refill your energy bar from zero to full. Best of all, TF doesn't trigger (and is not affected by) global cooldown so it's great to pop while waiting for everything else to refresh.
And, them there is the crown jewel of the Wrath Feral talents, the 51-pointer, Berserk. It reduces Energy cost of all Cat abilites by 50% for 15 seconds with a 5 min cool down. I haven't played with this one yet as I didn't have enough talent points for it without sacrificing Omen of Clarity until level 71, but I'll have it soon, oh yes I will.
Feral Charge for Cats is another new one. This one is useful and fun. You will literally leap through the air to close the distance between yourself and your target when you activate this ability. I have yet to see the Daze part work (it is Beta, after all), but I've found this useful for not only closing in on ranged dps mobs, but for tagging mobs in front of a surprised Hunter. Bonus points for doing it out of stealth.
New Cat Druid gear
Borean Tundra quests offered some immediate equipment upgrades for anyone in Outland blues and greens. In just two hours, my Feral druid was equipped in Marshwalker Chestpiece, Legguards, Boots and Pauldrons. Say what you want about the stats, but at least I didn't look a clown at a kid's party in my mismatched pre-Wrath gear (the image above is the Marshwalker set minus the Belt.) I also picked up Whalehunter's Gloves, a Scout's Signet Ring, a Talisman of the Tundra and a Writhing Longstaff,
I suspect there are comparable upgrades for those Druids that choose Howling Fjord as their first Northrend zone. There is also nice bits of Resto/Balance gear to choose from if there are no Feral upgrades offered as a quest reward. With the merging of +healing and +spell damage into +spell power, you can easily pick up a great spell set along the way that doubles as both Tree and Moonkin gear.
Health potions, Totem buffs and weapon enchants, oh my!
As promised, potions now work in Feral form. This is phenomenal for soloing cats. Sure we can shift out, pop a potion and shift back, but that's time we spend not shredding opponents. Now we can pop a Health potion without missing a beat. Of course, now we have to deal with Potion Sickness like everyone else, but it wasn't like we got to chain chug potions through a long fight like everyone else either.
Weapon enchants that proc now also work in Feral form. Hello, Mongoose (or Executioner, if that's your style.) Also, Shaman's revamped Windfury totem will work on Ferals. I haven't had a chance to try either of these yet, but will be able to confirm this later in the week.
That's it for now. Next time: instance runs, Balance soloing and more!
EDIT: Fixed Windfury link to revamped entry.

Very nice, thanks for the preview!
I do have one question. Have you noticed if they're making use of the ghostly Cat Spirit in Moonglade?
Taufurion Aug 6th 2008 9:19AM
Nice to hear Feral getting boost to their DPS, tbh i have all but accepted my fate as a tank atm
BTW Any news on the new Look Dire Bear and Cat Forms? or was that just a rumour as well lik Dire Cat form COUGH!!!
BillDoor Aug 6th 2008 9:53AM
There is an Inscription Glyph to give your Bear and Dire Bear forms a Polar Bear look. I haven't seen any for Cat form yet, but I suspect that's where we'll get our new looks.
Oneiroi Aug 6th 2008 11:41AM
I did see somewhere that there is no dire cat form, but they're working on a "new look".
I couldn't find the forum post to back it up though.

you linked the wrong windfury totem.

Use that one, it is what you get and less likely to cause confusion.

Question! Could you please upload screenshots of the new feral weapons (green quest rewards, blue instance drops, etc)? The one first ones from TBC looked horrible. THe staff from Ramparts, the staff of beasts and such. The end game raiding staves were ok but the first ones were just EEWWW! :P Thanks! :)
Micgo Aug 6th 2008 10:23AM
So far all of the staves with Feral AP look the same. They look like a staff with a spiked club head on the end. I would assume they are going to do a revamp of the item models right before release.

I'm still wanting to know how the +haste stuff is going to scale... I mean are we going to be sitting at .75 atk speed? I'm sitting at .97 Atk Speed in T6 level stuff now, and if that's going to greatly affect how Omen of Clarity procs (since they changed it to proc on white attacks), then +haste/expertise gear is going to replace the Epic stuff I have now...?

Some questions:
1) How have your experiences been with the new energy regen mechanic? I imagine having constant regen over 20/tick to allow for smoother play, but wanted to know if you had seen a difference.
2) Any difference in the Omen of Clarity proc rate
3) Any changes in Cat form armor? Any boost or whatnot
4) Do you have Primal Tenacity and have you noticed an improvement with the reduced duration / damage?
5) Have the removed the mana regen 'penalty' while in forms and has this impacted your gameplay at all?
Groth Aug 6th 2008 10:44AM
4.) is obselete, as primal tenacity has been returned to its old form.

Feral charge in cat form: I wantss it ... I wantss it my precioussss.....
theRaptor Aug 6th 2008 9:56AM
It sounds so awesome I am tempted to dust off my level 30 druid alt >.>
Micgo Aug 6th 2008 10:25AM
Feral charge (Cat) is pretty nice to close the distance to a mob that is running away or to speed up mob-to-mob leveling.
Right now, it is broken as it does not stun the mob or position you directly behind the mob as the tooltip states.
But it is still fun to go flying across the air.
Kesh Aug 6th 2008 9:50AM
I'm assuming that when you say 4 druid specs you're not including the panzerkin?
Slayblaze Aug 6th 2008 10:06AM
My Druid alt has always been feral-cat spec/geared but I recently tried full Boomkin and actually really enjoy it - enough to consider levelling in Wrath that way - but this seriously makes me want to reconsider that course of action.
It seems as if the new talents may bring feral cats a little closer to the godlike performance of Rogues, or at least close the (huge) gap a little. Of course Rogues are getting new talents as well so I'm sure the gap will still be well in place, I'm just hoping the performance gap is lessened a bit.

A few questions ive had about druids:
1. when you do get berserk, is it impressive for a 51 pt talent? I could be wrong, but it seemed pretty lacking to me. 50% reduced energy cost for 15 sec, once every 5 minutes? Seems pretty lackluster compared to a lot of other 51 pt talents, alot of which are IC or have much shorter cooldowns.
2. I thought i read feral charge in cat form would attempt to put you behind your opponent a la shadowstep...is this still the case?
3. Cant wait to see how the moonkin trial goes. So many goodies in there, my main question is how typhoon operates and how starfall is looking, both of which seem pretty confusing in the tooltip.
Havitech Aug 6th 2008 10:26AM
1. Don't forget this part: "Berserk instantly clears all effects which cause loss of control of your character, and makes you immune to them for the duration while in Cat Form, Bear Form, or Dire Bear Form."
I'm not in the beta, but I'm sure Berserk is going to be an incredible talent.
Micgo Aug 6th 2008 10:30AM
1. Beserk is pretty lackluster so far (I just reached 77 on my feral in beta). I think I may have used it a handful of times in the entire time I leveled. I think the combination of the long cooldown and the pretty situational additional effect (breaks you from fear, etc) make it pretty weak.
I would expect it to be changed whenever druids get their lookover.
2. The positioning from feral cat charge is broken right now.
3. I haven't played a moonkin yet, but from what I have heard in-game and on the forums is that Typhoon is wickedly overpowered and will probably be tuned down and that Starfall is not working well due to how it is designed.
Ryan Aug 6th 2008 10:56AM
Really? It's about the same cooldown as Adrenaline Rush and I use that all the time while leveling my rogue alt. The Bestial Wrath element is probably more apt for PVP, but the secondary effect is great for PVE purposes (Last Stand for bears and the aforementioned AR for kitties).
