New bear animations for eating and fishing discovered
Everyone knows that bears are actually pretty good fishermen, but for some reason Ferals have to shift back out of form and use a pole like everyone else. That may be changing, however. Andrige, the same person who bought us the new data-mined Hairstyles, has discovered the animations showcased in the above video, which point to the possibility of more life injected into the old Druid Feral forms.
One animation called EmoteEat shows the bear bracing a piece of food against the ground with his paw while tearing off a chunk with his teeth, while another is a fishing animation where the bear looks to be pawing at the water, waiting to slap out a fish. The other exciting thing in the video is the possibility of a closed mouth on my bear! Do you know how many flies he's caught with that constantly open mouth of his?
I logged onto my Druid on the Beta servers to check on the status of the animations. While you can now eat, drink and use potions in Feral forms on Beta, there are still no animations associated with the act (You simply sit down while eating). In addition, you can't fish at all in Feral forms (Trying to cast my line put me back in Night Elf form).
Unfortunately, the fact that these animations haven't been implemented yet does lead me to a bit of pessimistic thought: They simply be meant for bear mobs, and not for Feral bears at all. Blizzard's been adding a lot of cool little idle animations to mobs, such as mama beasts who flush out critters for their cubs to chase and eat, so this may simply be one more set. Still, since they exist, they could easily be added on to the Feral bear's animation list in a future patch even if they aren't originally meant for Ferals. Here's hoping we see them there!

emm .. i think these animations are for the bear mobs, i seen them doing this in the various zones that bears exisit, they dig for rabbits or fish for fish. so i think this is rather misleading info :P

Yeah, didn't I read somewhere that they are adding an ability for hunter pets to eat carcasses to regain health? My guess is this is simply an animation for the bear PET to eat a carcass. Not for a druid to eat or fish... which makes no sense.
Toldry Aug 6th 2008 7:13PM
Bears are on the Tenacity tree, while the carcass eating talent is on Cunning. so this can't be.

Beef: It makes more sense than you might think. After all, Feral Druids in Bear or Cat form can now drink potions without having to revert to Caster form. Drinking isn't exactly a far cry from eating, in terms of character animations.

I have 2 70 druids (horde and alliance), I know how they work. ;)
Being able to drink pots will be nice for sure, and I guess if we get to eat while in forms it makes sense to have an animation. However, it doesn't really make sense for fishing since you don't immediately eat the fish after you catch it. It shows up in the popup window then you decide to put it in your inventory or not take it at all -- you don't just eat it. So, that's where my hang up lies, primarily.
Regardless of what it's used for it's certainly nice to see some more animations added.

now i got to go watch Spirited away -_- love that music :D ... oh and thats kinda cool i guess.

I don't care about the other crap, but the closed mouth thing would be really awesome. That's something that has bugged me since I started playing WoW. I would also prefer if they just flat out removed the "snarl" appearance of the mouth since bears are actually physically incapable of doing that with their mouth, so it ends up making the head not even look like a bear.
Smurk Aug 6th 2008 8:35PM
Even the closed-mouth appearance looks weird. Very gummy.
But I'd rather complain about the dumb Tauren cat form.
Or that my BE pally's shoulder armor still floats above his body.
I guess Blizzard is pretty busy making death knights living gods right now though huh.

Smurk: This has been an issue since loooooooong before the concept of the "Wrath" expansion even existed.
I would encourage you to use the embedded YouTube object above to look up "Druids of Azeroth," which features Andrige's custom Druid skins. These modified textures are much easier on the eye and more fitting, in nearly every case, than the skins that Blizzard kept in the released version of the game.
Funny thing about Andrige's modifications ... Blizzard decided that his gorgeous re-skin work was a violation of the Terms of Service. I wonder if this has anything to do with a few hours of an amateur's work proving the in-game artists' claims of "lacking resources" to be utter bologna (i.e. "too much time and effort," "lack of player interest;" etc).
Fraufrau Aug 7th 2008 1:41AM
I was going to suggest the same thing Badger.
Andrige's re-skins of the druid forms (all except water form) are awesome and make my druid feel a lot cooler.
I won't be surprised if it turns out that these animations are for npc mobs or hunter pets that Andrige includes the eating one in his form edits.

Eheh, glad you like the pack but I can't really switch animations from that Bear model to our own playable one. At least I think, a friend of mine was working on a 'bone-switcher' that theoretically could switch the setup of bones (which also includes the animations) to another model. He said it didn't work however and I believed him, but I haven't really checked if he has updated his tool since then.
But... as many of you say, the fish/eat is probably just NPC animations so don't take this too hard if this whole thing won't even happen.

What was the song playing in the background?
meaddrinker Aug 6th 2008 5:53PM
Ripping up a leg of meat in bear form sounds just fine. I hope that if they do something similar for kitty form, when you drink it will look like lapping up milk from a bowl. The odd licking of a paw and washing your face with it would be nice too :)

How is this new? These are the animations bear mobs in Grizzly Hills use while standing around. Possibly other bear mobs do it as well, but I only noticed it in Grizzly Hills when I was near a stream and watched a bear catch a trout.
Snuzzle Aug 7th 2008 2:40AM
Er, well, they don't do it in live, and they do it in Grizzly Hills (which is in WOTLK Beta)... so, it's new...
Todd Aug 6th 2008 6:14PM
Hey why not give bears and cats a cannibalize ability? Then they could eat the monsters they just killed to increase their health again. I mean don't bears kill stuff to eat in the first place?
yaba Aug 6th 2008 6:21PM
Nice thing, these is something druids should already have but its good to see it coming anyway.
But its not safe tho, those emotes used to be in the TBC beta too and blizz removed them from it.
I am also interested in the horde cats, with the posibility of bears closing their mouths and gylphs changing apearance, will horde Cat form get a make over somehow?
dotorion Aug 7th 2008 5:02AM
Obviously bear mobs are higher priority than player models when making and implementing these kind of animations.
Andrige Aug 7th 2008 5:57AM
Tssk, we don't know how it is yet until they actually release the new Dire Bear/Cat model for us. So far it seems to me they're still using the ordinary models from pre-WotLK (although, for some reason I can find them in the patch.MPQ from the beta) so don't jump to conclusions here.
h8rain Aug 7th 2008 3:19PM
Yea if that gets applied to mobs and not players, I would be really disappointed. Like wow, look the bear's mouth open and closes. My apparently got "lockjaw" open :(
