Ask A Beta Tester: Will we ever run out of Death Knight questions?

tal* asked....
Will school specific spell power increase healing? I have Drape of the Righteous from Kara, which only increases holy damage right now. Will it increase healing done by holy spells in Wrath?
I have one of those too! And, no, it does not increase healing in Wrath -- school-specific spell power seems to be damage-only.
max attack asked....
I have a question that I believe is probably on the minds of many other holy specced paladins. If the spell effects of this libram are associated with Bessing of Light, and that has been taken from the game what will happen to this libram?
Excellent question. However, I don't have much of an answer. In the present beta build, the text on this libram is exactly the same as it is on the live realms, despite the loss of BoL. But it is a beta: there are bugs, and the point of having a beta is so Blizzard can find them and fix them. I'll be sure to give a heads' up on Ask a Beta Tester whenever the text changes on this item.
Taytayflan asked....
Are Alliance and Horde Death Knights hostile to each other before they leave the starting area? And if so, can they just fight it out, or will guards intervene?
Horde and Alliance Death Knights actually are kept in seperate instances as they level up through the Death Knight starting quests. You will not encounter a Death Knight of the opposite faction until you hit Eastern Plaguelands.
Nathan asked....Are you able to group with or talk to people of opposing races? E.g. If you are a human, can you group with or chat to an orc? If so, what language do they apparently speak?
As mentioned in the previous question, Alliance and Horde Death Knights are kept apart from one another, so grouping never comes into play until after you've exited the DK starting instance and entered Eastern Plaguelands. As it stands on the present beta realms, your Death Knight will speak whatever language is appropriate to their race.
Zanzi asked....
Death Knights start out at level 55 wtih zero talent points -- which means you don't log on and immediately have to figure out what your different talent trees are or what to do with them. As you do quests in your starting zone, you will be awarded talent points (1, 2, or 3 at a time, depending on the quest) as well as money and experience. This gives you a bit of time to experience gameplay before you have to make any lasting choices, and by the time you've finished the starting zone, you'll have reached a level-appropriate number of talent points.
Alex asked....
What is Blizzard doing with old Outland gear other than spell damage/healing in order to make them usable for upcoming Death Knights and classes which need different stats now?
I asked our resident Death Knight expert, Daniel Whitcomb, what stats the Death Knight in the know would be after. He informed me, "DK itemization is pretty much 100% similar to Warrior itemization. (Except they won't want shield block or block rating gear since they can't use shields.) Spell power doesn't work on their spell effects, it all stacks with AP." So I'm not entirely sure a change in gear is needed -- Death Knights should be happy to take what was previously though of as warrior gear.
Fletch asked....
There seems to be a lot of priest talents that increase the amount of healing received by a target by quite a large amount (for example the top tier holy talent increase healing received by 40%) - is this increase needed because the mobs are doing a lot more damage, or is it partly to balance the change to spell power?
Though I don't have a lot of instance experience at this point, I can say this is certainly not to "balance out" the spell power change. My two healers (a paladin and a priest) are both finding that their heals hit notably harder than they did before the spell power change.
freakinhawaii asked....
With the spell gear all being switched over to spell power, will healers be competing with DPS for gear (especially in 5 man PUGs) or is there something that still sets healer specific gear apart?
I have to say that this is something that concerns me, though as some of our commenters have pointed out, a healer will still likely be looking for different stats than a DPS caster -- things like spirit, intellect, and MP5 while a DPS caster is likely to be more interested in straight up damage and crit. This change is certainly going to give everyone more options -- it will be easier for DPS casters to pick up stats like MP5 or intellect if they want it for longer fights (especially since no one's going to be chain-chugging mana potions anymore) and easier for healers to pick up stats like spell crit (if they're interested in itemizing that way).
But for Priests, Mages, and Warlocks, this is going to mean more gear overlap than ever before, and until we have a complete picture on what sorts of dungeon drops will be available, especially at end-game levels, it's hard to say how it will play out. The problem of fighting over drops could be solved by making gear class-specific or by bosses dropping tokens that can be turned in for gear rather than gear itself -- Blizzard has used both of these options in the past, and either could address gear competition issues in Wrath.

I have a question: How are paladins shaping up in the Beta? Is actual playability living up to the hype?
Khanmora Aug 7th 2008 11:58AM
Right now there are so many bugs it's hard to comment on the regular playability. You can check out the paladin beta forums for news from the pallys and the devs. Koraa just said yesterday that they will be adjusting mana costs for all pally spells in the next push.

Don't duel Retadins... you'll get rocked XD.

how are the tradeskills looking? What kinds of well fed buffs can you get in wrath?

Not many recipes have been added to Cooking, Alchemy, Tailoring, Leatherworking, Jewelcrafting, or Engineering. Blacksmithing has 2 sets of armor and 2 shields, 1 set is green the other is blue. Inscriptions have their initial recipes. First aid have 3 levels of bandages. Enchanting has about 10 new formulae.

Thankyou for answering all of our questions. I have a few myself:
1.) Has there been any change in the badge requirments for badge of justice loot? ( both old, and the newer t6 equivallent stuff)
2.) have any of the rewards from achievment points been reveiled yet?
3.) how have the systems requirements changed, if at all ?
Thanks again!

I have just one question - how does damage output of healing-specced classes currently compare to pure DPS classes such as warlocks, mages, rogues or hunters in damage output?
With the new spellpower change many DPS classes are concerned that healers will do comparable damage to them and/or that damage-specced hybrids will be able to heal themselves much better than before. This would indeed be the ultimate end of pure DPS classes in both PvP and PvE.
Angus Aug 7th 2008 11:59AM
Yea, because those pure DPS classes don't bring anything to the table besides damage...
HUH?
Mages will again be kings of AoE and offer a ton of control options. Warlock and Mage debuffs making everyone's damage better means they will still show up. Warlocks CC options are not in question, no shadow priest is banishing an elemental. Hunters remain able to kite things easily along with their damage increasing buffs in BM and Survival will be wanted. Rogues are just plain wrong and will now be able to do AoE damage to remain near the top.
Yes, hybrids are getting nearly the same damage. They should. Pure classes are getting utility buffs that are making them more useful and wanted for raids. Meanwhile the hybrids are getting similar buffing options or better and so their damage needs to be about the same.
If every class offers great and unique things to increase the effectiveness of the raid and can do their role extremely well (tank, dps or heal) then everyone benefits. Hybrids doing comparable numbers to a "pure" class means you can make the "pure" classes bring more to the table than just damage.
My raids depend on the unique abilities of every class we bring. We can tell when we are short of something very important like CC or AoE. This is how it should be, and if anything, it should get better with all the classes getting good buffs to utility and synergy.
Khanmora Aug 7th 2008 12:00PM
Healers still won't have the talents to keep up with dps specs, it will just allow us to solo more easily and contribute during healing downtime to the dps.
Blackhorn Aug 7th 2008 12:22PM
You just have to remember, DPS gear or not, there's something to be said for "spec"
Faye Aug 7th 2008 1:42PM
@Angus
I suggest you read what I wrote. I never expressed a concern for the damage output of damage specced hybrids being higher than that of pure DPS, I have a Moonkin myself.
That said, your comment is irrelevant and I suggest you read what you respond to before doing so.
All I was asking about was the healing capability of a DPS-specced hybrid and/or the DPS capability of a pure healer. It's already hard for a pure DPS class to kill a healer nowadays and when I imagine my druid specced resto while sustaining the spelldamage of a Moonkin...
...or even better! My druid specced balance while having her healing spells benefit insanely from spellpower. Well, it simply seems a little too powerful.
Just my two cents.

How are warriors holding up in outland? They havn't really gotten the nerf-hamemr, but every other class seems to be gettign something awesome, while we're stuck with a surprisingly less-than-awesome Titan's Grip (It's cool, but kinda useless) and heroic leap (Again, cool, but doesn't exactly help us at all). With DK itemization looking exactly like warriors, I'm worried that my warrior might get left in the dust, against the DKs seemingly better-than-paladin AoE tanking, and with feral druids DPS boost, it seems that if you're not main-tanking bosses, you wont have a spot in the raid group.
Manatank Aug 7th 2008 11:57AM
Perhaps you should take a look at shockwave?
Blayed Aug 7th 2008 12:02PM
Shockwave is nice, but I still don't think it's the godsend that other classes seem to be getting, and it doesn't seem to be useful in any situation but trash pulls or prot PVP.
Brian Arnold Aug 7th 2008 12:28PM
A prior past note from like a week ago said that warriors were going to be polished up soon. As a warrior, I'm immensely looking forward to some more changes. :D
SkwidSpawn Aug 7th 2008 1:27PM
The trick with warriors is that they have traditionally been the most stable class in WoW. Warriors (especially prot) are very sensitive to changes in gear and class dynamics.
You can definitely expect to see warriors in raids in BC, just keep in mind that Warriors are the most gear-dependent class in the game and it may take a while for them to truly shine as DPS-ers.
Blayed Aug 7th 2008 1:33PM
I'm a tank, through and through, and I couldn't imagine raiding any other way, but for the 70-80 grind, there's no doubt in my mind that I'm goign to be spending the entire time QQing about Death Knights stealing my loot! At least with Paladins the gear has different stats for each spec for the most part. Now every single time I want any gear, it's going to suit DKs as well. :'(
Joker Aug 7th 2008 3:35PM
Well, if it helps unless the DKs are crack levelers you'll have a head start on them. That might be part of the intent too, with the level gap warrior players can get a nice head start on the Deathknights
Schadow Aug 7th 2008 4:20PM
I hate to break it to you, but Paladins will be rolling on your gear as well. They won't be dependent on spell power for threat generation - it will be based on stam and AP.
Pretty much all plate-wearing tanks will be rolling on plate tanking gear because they will all need pretty much the same stuff.
There will be more competition for your drops, but because there won't be specific drops for the other classes, there will be more drops for you to roll on. Considering the dice I use, that's a good thing for you.
CanadianZero Aug 7th 2008 11:27AM
i've heard rumors that the "Hand of A'dal", "Champion of the Naruu" and "of the Shattered Sun" titles will be untamable in WotLK. is this true?
