Olympic battleground rewards appear on European and Chinese servers
Despite the extensive problems and human violations rights perpetuated by the Chinese government, some in service of the Olympic games themselves, most of the world seems to content to settle in and watch the Beijing Olympics one way or another. Apparently, that attitude has spread to Blizzard itself.
Currently on the European and Chinese servers, there are NPCs at each major Battlemaster area in the capital cities who proclaim that Battlegrounds are hosting some type of "Spirit of Competition."
For simply participating in a battleground, you are sent a Competitor's Tabard, which features 4 multi-colored rings on a white background, a clear reference to the Olympics itself. If you win a battleground during this time period, you may also have a chance at receiving a gold medal which summons a spirit of competition, which looks like a small Chinese dragon according to tipster Ichthallus.
This competition does not appear to be live on the US Servers, nor has anyone from Blizzard spoken up to reveal if it ever will be as of this writing. We'll have to watch and see what happens. As Blizzard does not appear to be an official Olympic partner, there is some concern from some quarters that this could simply be a copyright issue. It's also possible that this was meant to be a Chinese servers only event, and it only accidentally got onto the EU servers.
Thanks to everyone who sent us tips on this!
EDIT: Belfaire has confirmed that this event will be coming to US and Oceanic servers starting at Midnight server time. Thanks to those who let us know in the comments!

I want tabard and dragon in US servars nao KTHNXBAI!
P.S.
Seriously it would be nice for something new for live servers isntead of wrath.

In before the retarded political posts about the olympics.
I got a gold/green dragon, rather than the purple one pictured above, are there different dragons available?

I would assume this event is not live on US servers due to time zone differences. The Olympics begin on August 8th, and it is still only the 7th here, whereas in Europe and China it's tomorrow already. So the pets and tabards might not be live until midnight or server reset. I hope I'm right!

I hope you are right too. /want pet dragon and olympics tabard
Calaana Aug 7th 2008 9:08PM
The olyimpcs have a "global" start time - if this is being released in such a manner as you suggest, they would be starting 8/8/8 (and I'm guessing, 8:08pm) china time for each version. At a off hand guess, that'd be around 3am on the 7th for us players.. I think.

I hope so too!

I just got both the rewards, playing on a EU server, you get the tabard by finishing one BG game, losing it. And the ring by winning one. I just got both, and they're awesome... especially the medallion!
Farrell Aug 7th 2008 8:55PM
not quite. You get the tabard regardless - as long as you play the full game.
The medallion is a random chance
Farrell Aug 7th 2008 8:56PM
...random chance if you win, that is

Lets all remember what these games are about. This is the entire world coming together, in peace, to compete. These athletes, work harder than almost anyone on the planet simply to bring pride to themselves and their country. The games are for the these men and women who serve. This a-political event should remain in that spirit and celebrate the human race.
And anyone the problems with China will be solved my more involvement not less.
Daniel Whitcomb Aug 7th 2008 10:10PM
Nasgoul,
I suggest you read the article I linked in the story. The participation in the Olympics has done nothing to soften China's abuses, and in fact has simply facilitated further oppression of its populace.
And I'd say that the Athelete's dreams are not worth the crushed lives of the thousand of Chinese Peasants who were displaced, jailed, beaten, or stolen from to build the Olympic venues.
Kolo Aug 8th 2008 4:22AM
Hey Daniel, what about the thousands of lives America ruined by murdering innocent people in Iraq? You Americans really need to get off your soap box, because its really a case of pot calling the kettle black.
Hey America, WTS Foreign Policy, lawlz.
Tolthalan Aug 8th 2008 4:46AM
But they're ATHLETES. How can the lives of a few thousand people possibly be worth anything in comparison to say, a running race or a jumping competition?
Tuhljin Aug 8th 2008 4:55AM
Hey Kolo,
Stop the lies and maybe we'll consider having a serious debate with you. As long as you have to rely on garbage like that to make your point, it's a waste of our time. Seriously, the U.S. "murdered" Iraqis? Who's your news source, the "U.S. is eeeevil" blogs? Al Jazeera? Certain completely discredited U.S. Congressmen? Try something more reputable next time.

Sure Tuhljin, nobody died in the Iraq War, nobody... and Guantanamo is a theme park...
