I agree with Raze, the DK starter is tailored very well to do a number of things. Namely, it sets up your story (how the DKs get free and join the Alliance/Horde), Northrend's story (how the Argent Dawn and Scarlet Crusade both decide to head up and attack Artie at the same time), and it teaches you your class. Before you even leave Ebon Hold you're taught to use Runeforging and you how to fight. One of the first quests you get when you come down to ground is to duel other DK's (lern2PvP!). There are also a few quests that introduce the new siege weapon mechanics.
It might *seem* like you're "losing free will", but it's nothing like being forced into completing the 1-20 race zones in BC. The DK zone takes only a few hours to complete, and the whole thing is friggin fun, no matter how many times you do it.
