Around Azeroth: Let the games begin
Despite this year's political furor, the Olympics are still an important part of the summer. And one of the best parts of the Olympics is the opening ceremonies. I particularly like watching vaguely embarassed athletes walk past in impractical national costumes that no one has worn for hundreds of years. After receiving her Competitor's Tabard, Jilara of <Black Dragon Clan> on Perenolde felt inspired to recreate the opening ceremonies, complete with Mistyreed Torch. Sadly, the national costume of Lordaeron appears to include some very questionable athletic shorts.
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more sunsets or pointless geopolitical spam in Trade Chat.

Why would you even link to that? All it's going to do is create more drama (and yes, I do realise this comment will do the same).
For the love of god, please, please, please keep all real life politics out of your stories. The two fastest ways to start a flame war online is to bring up politics and/or religion. Those two subjects do not belong in gaming news, since it serves no purpose or has any relevance to the game.
Please, I beg you, keep real life political and theological commentary off of this website. When I come here I want to read about WoW and get involved and upset over the politics of it. I much prefer to get into a heated fight over raiding, PvP, or what have you, then a real life issue where people's feelings can and will be hurt and the worst will be brought out of them.
So, again, I beg you, WoW Insider, please refrain from mixing real life issues and the game because everyone loses.

Why? Why is it so terrible to mix politics and WoW in news coverage, when that mixing naturally occurs. Bleedover between reality and Azeroth is inevitable, and you want to ignore just because some people dislike politics or someones feelings might get hurt?
Blizzard made the move of creating an Olympic themed holiday, they opened the can of worms that is real-life and brought it into Azeroth. Instead of sticking our collective heads in the sand, perhaps we might be better off by having the occasional news story that covers areas where Azeroth and Earth meet.
The vast majority of articles on this site are pure WoW news. Is it so terrible to have the occasional article, even a biased op/ed piece, that tackles the areas of bleedover? I understand you don't like politics and don't want it polluting your escapism. Good for you, go read a different article, any article. 9 out of 10 will be fine for you, but some of us do like politics, and some of us do like news coverage that examines where real world events and WoW intersect. Is it so intolerable to have the occasional article that caters to people that enjoy politics in their wow? Are you so bent on your conception of what WoW and WoW news should be that you can broker no dissent?

You fail to see that when an article has real world politics mixed in it the WoW part is totally drown out. You can't deny that, just look at what's happening now.
It's so unnecessarry and, no offence intended, I don't care what the writers here think about X in the real world. We come here to read about WoW, not to see WoW players get on soap boxes.
Yes, I could go read another article, but what about that one? Once it's polluted with politics it's totally ruined. Any real discussion about the tabard, pet, or event in general is not going to happen now since people are just attacking and defending the writer's stance.
Again, it's unneccessary and, dare I say, innappropriate for this website.

I respectfully disagree PimpyMcPimp (wow, thats a line you could only ever hear in an online comments section)
I come here to read about WoW, just like you, but the reality is that WoW and politics do have real intersections that are worth discussing and thinking about. You might not like that, and its your prerogative to ignore it, but don't try to ruin it for the rest of us by saying such discussions have no place here.
I completely agree that there is a time and a place. A political rant on the current election would have little place in an article on new warlock talents. But when Blizzard creates an Olympics knockoff inside WoW, they invite discussion and debate, and as a news blog WoW insider writers ought to cover it.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then, and thank you for being intelligent and not mindlessly insulting me. Perhaps I overreaceted a tad, and you make some very vailid points, but I'm still against it, if not as ferociously as I was before. I've had more sleep since I wrote the original comment.
Anyways, again, thank you for the intelligent and respectful argument. It gives me just a little more faith in this community.

My guild master and I, who have previously never agreed on a single design for our guild tabard, both think this one is unwearable.
kabshiel Aug 9th 2008 12:00PM
The IOC can be real jerks about protecting Olympic trademarks. Blizzard should be careful.
Thander Aug 9th 2008 2:01PM
The tabard only has fewer rings than the Olympic rings, different ordering, and different colors.
With all the heat they've been getting lately, I think they would approve of promotions that increase interest.

^ well if i remember correctly, i think blizzard's legal dept won the gold medal in the Lawsuits category =P
MRkity Aug 9th 2008 3:18PM
