Hunter Pet News: New exotic pet families added, Kill Command changed
The latest Beta Build has hit the test servers, and there's a lot to report for Hunters. In particular, many of the announced changes we discussed in the last Scattered Shots went through. Aspect of the Beast now grants a melee AP buff, and Mongoose Bite is unlinked from dodge. Tranquilizing Shot now dispels magic effects, and Arcane Shot does not.
Most of the big notable changes however, center around pets, and specifically Beast Mastery. The 51 point talent is now implemented, and 5 extra talent points work. Chimeras and Devilsaurs are now exotic only. In addition, two new exotic pet families have been found: Worms and Silithids.
You can tame both the Dredge Striker and Dredge Crusher type worms in Silithus and the Jormungar worms in Northrend. For Silithids, only one "warrior" skin seems tamable, while the worker, wasp, and heavy tank type silithids are not tamable. The worms are Tenacity pets who feed on bread, cheese, and fungus and have a family skill called Acid Spit that does nature damage and reduces, while the silithid is a Cunning pet who feeds on meat and fungus and have an ability called Venom Web Spray that roots the target for 4 seconds and does nature damage.
I've added some screenshots of the new pets and their abilities to the gallery above. Also, if you're not impressed with any of the new exotic pet families so far, take heart. We've been told they're still working on the pets themselves.
Unfortunately, the rest of the pet-related news is less than amazing.
First, the pet resist skills have been removed completely. Instead of gaining the old trainable resists as they level, pets now simply gain a flat +1 resist every level. This is pretty certainly an overall nerf, especially since there's no way to get the previous max resist level of 140. Some Hunters are already asking for 1.5 resists per level so that their pets can at least somewhat approach the old levels. It may be, however, that Blizzard means for you to set aside 3 talent points if you really want some extra protection against the elements for your pet.
The most controversial change to go in with this patch is a complete revamp to how Kill Command works. Now, instead of a quick cooldown damage attack that lights up upon a Hunter crit, it's a 2 minute cooldown triggered ability that causes the next 3 pet special abilities to hit for extra damage -- 60% on the first, 40% on the second, 20% on the third.
We were told by Koraa that Kill Command would be changed to allow us to have better burst damage, but it does honestly look like like nothing more than a massive nerf. Considering a Beastmastery Hunter with good critical strike percentage and the Focused Fire talent could spit out an extra 500-1000 damage every 6 seconds or so using Kill Command, it's hard to see how this new version is better. Even if it is controlled burst damage, the burst damage itself probably won't be as much as the old Kill Command, given that pet special abilities don't hit for much. As it is, most Beastmastery Hunters will probably save Kill Command for a Cobra Strikes proc anyway.
Of course, reports from higher level hunters are that rank 2 Kill Command works the same as before, which means that the rank 1 Kill Command may be a bug or a mislabeled ability
If it's not, and rank 1is the "real" ability, why Kill Command was nerfed so massively is unclear. Some Hunters believe that we're just getting too powerful, and they wanted to nerf our DPS some way or shift DPS emphasis away from the Beastmastery tree and onto the others, while others believe that Blizzard simply doesn't realize how badly they nerfed the ability. Either way, this Hunter is hoping they reconsider, or at least fiddle with it a bit more. In the meantime, I'll just be over here, testing with my worm.

I must say, I'm REALLY glad they moved the dispell to Tranq. Shot. It seems pretty overpowered right now having it on a high-damage ability like Arcane Shot. Putting it on Tranq. will make it a choice, not something you automatically do when killing stuff.
I agree that the Kill Command change seems pretty crappy. The changed version is a useful spell (it's Tidal Force for pets), but it's nowhere near as good as the current Kill Command. I don't really want more abilities that can only be used once every 2 minutes, and the current KC adds a bit more activity to the usual stand-and-gun cycle.

There's already way too many shots and stings and whatnot for the hunter, moving the dispel to tranq (which has roughly twice the cooldown of arcane shot) is nothing but a slap in the face to hunters. Where the hell am I supposed to find room for this keybind?!
And please forgive me for saying this, but calling the "revamped" (to use Koraa's words) kill command "useful" is laughable at best. Testing by a raiding hunter in the beta over at elitist jerks showed the skill to have LESS THAN 7 DPS...
Revamping something usually implies it's going to be improved, but there's nothing 'vamped' about this kill command at all. It's just a shit ability now, far worse than when it first premiered more than a year and a half ago (bugs, quirks and all as it had then). And as already stated, hunters have enough 2-min cooldown abilities. When am I going to find the time to use this one then (considering it still procs off of player crits)?
Most of hunter changes so far has been everything from great to fantastic, but sometimes I really REALLY wonder what the hell blizzard's smoking.

Cry a little more, man. I have been playing a hunter since beta and have rolled through all the buffs and nerfs (mostly nerfs, admittedly) and the first thing i said when I saw that Arcane shot was a dispel too was "Wow, that's OP."
No other class has an ability that is part of their standard rotation that dispels something. Period. Every class has to make a choice to actively dispel a buff. When it was on arcane shot, our highest damage moving shot, every retard hunter that didn't even realize they were doing it was dropping buffs off everyone they saw. Putting it on tranq shot separates the good hunters from the noobs.
The only issue I have is the increased cooldown Tranq. shot has over Arcane shot. They should drop the CD on Tranq. down to 6 seconds. It's not like it will change anything other than putting our dispel timer on the same CD it is now.
If you're worried about action bar space, spend some quality time with a macro guide. The only ability I have in regular use that I can't access via 1-6 and alt/ctrl/shift modifiers is flare, and that's just because it's so useful I bound it to my mouse button.

Faar, just for using the assinine "slap in the face" QQ, you deserve to actually be slapped in the face.
Having a dispel on a normal part of a DPS damage rotation was assinine. No other class can do a chunk of damage while simultaneously dispelling another player. As a hunter since WoW went live, even I can appreciate how stupid that ability was. I am also happy to see tranq shot given some utility beyond 1-2 boss fights.

"No other class has an ability that is part of their standard rotation that dispels something. Period. Every class has to make a choice to actively dispel a buff."
Um, my Prot Warrior's Shield Slam dispells. ;)
In WotLK, all Warriors will have it, too.

The Northern Worm, whatever that thing is looks real cool looking.

I hope blizz makes those those big grub Carrion Devourers in EPL tameable.
AJ Aug 9th 2008 3:47PM
still waiting to hear what happens when you tame an exotic pet then spec out of 51 BM. Does it stay around for when you spec back in again?
SpaceDog Aug 9th 2008 4:51PM
I dunno if anyone's actually tried it, but a blue said they would stay.
Thander Aug 9th 2008 7:23PM
I've heard the pet is dismissed when you respec (like what happens warlock summons when they respec). It basically goes into your stable until you have the talent again. Once you get the talent again, you can remove it from the stable as your pet.

Dune FTW
"Or maybe because I walked without rhythm."
onetrueping Aug 9th 2008 7:01PM
...and all of a sudden, that part of the Weapon of Choice lyrics makes perfect sense.
tehvoid Aug 9th 2008 3:59PM
I'd love if rare tameable beast somewhat keep their big size while tamed with the 51 BM...
dpoyesac Aug 9th 2008 4:30PM
So, after seeing the coolness that are giant exotic pets my guess is that hunters will have three specs: BM, that one no one will ever spec, and that other one no one will ever spec.
Xino Aug 9th 2008 4:38PM
You must not have seen survival
ZekeGrimsblade Aug 9th 2008 4:45PM
Nah, survival is looking really good to me, especially if I can get into raiding. It has some abilities that are just outstanding, even for solo hunting.
Heilig Aug 9th 2008 4:46PM
Survival looks to be the new raid spec man. Hunting party is so wonderful it's hard to believe. It's like having a shadow priest in the group, but it's not limited to mana. The days of surv hunters being brought for a single debuff are over.
dpoyesac Aug 9th 2008 5:25PM
Yeah, yeah, yeah -- Survival might be useful.
But it will never be this COOL.
So there will be three specs: BM, the one no one uses, and the one raiders use but they secretly wish they had a big gi-normous Devilsaur.
Rob Aug 9th 2008 4:47PM
Shrug, maybe they don't want us to raid. Who knows what they are thinking. I'm glad I have other toons that I can play! (Surely they cant ruin all classes at once?)
DwarfHunter Aug 10th 2008 5:43PM
@SpaceDog
Actually a blue posted that:
"As far as what happens if you have an exotic pet and respec, most likely the pet's talents will just reset. Yeah you get a free pet respec out of the deal, but it's not as if it's free since the hunter has to respec. Any exotic pets in the stable won't be lost, but you wouldn't be able to get them out of the stable either. If you have an exotic pet at the moment you respec, then it will probably be dismissed (but not abandoned) and you won't be able to summon it again, forcing you to go swap it into the stable. (Or abandon it if you're THAT kind of hunter.)"
