Addon Spotlight: Spellcraft
As expansion apathy sets in, and my friends and guildmates begin to lose interest in raiding, I have joined the ranks of the many players who have transitioned to playing their alts. To that end, I've had an opportunity to explore some new addons designed for specific classes. Spellcraft stands out as simple and useful for the mage about town. This addon handles a few mage functions via a simple graphic interface and a set of more subtle features. With automated reagent restocking, polymorph warnings, Evocation weapon-swapping and a simple teleport and portal menu, Spellcraft offers much while asking little. (The memory footprint is minimal)
Granted, there are addons that provide similar functionality, and I've profiled a few of them, but Spellcraft is tailor-made for mages and their unique abiities. On install, you'll notice a minimap icon, which can be moved around your UI via a right-click+drag. Left-clicking this icon will open an interface that shows your teleports and portals. It also shows your hearthstone and prints the number of ports/teleports available based on the number of reagents you have.
To access the options interface, use this command:
- /spellcraft
- Automatically equipping weapons/wands with the best spirit intellect (the author notes the switch in the comments on Curse) when you evocate for maximum mana return. It will switch back once you've channeled your spell.
- Auto-release on death in Battlegrounds, not a logical fit per se, but a handy feature nonetheless.
- Prompts the mage to strip when using Invisibility while in a group and leaving combat. Reminds you to dress yourself as well. (Someone explain this one to me, I'm a mage n00b.)
- Another oddly placed, but useful, feature is garbage collection when you die. The author claims this will cut back on computer lag, any addon devs want to chime in?
- Restocks reagents based on the amount of each that the user designates.
- Auto-repairs your gear and sells gray items in your inventory.
- Using the /bandagem command will message healers targeting you that you are using a bandage.
- Finally, my personal favorite, this mod will not only announce polymorphs, but whispers party/raid members targeting your sheep (or pig or turtle) to leave your little critter alone.
So, although there are other methods of doing many of these things, Spellcraft provides useful features for mages in particular. There is a fan update out there as well, so you've got a couple of options when trying this one out.
What other addons are you using for your mages? I'm always looking to try out new addons, so lets hear it! Dismissed.

The equipment swapping for Spirit is useless now since Evocation no longer regens Mana based on Spirit, but a percentage of total Mana.
As for the stripping while using Invisibility thing, I have no idea what that's for, lol.
Hurode Aug 10th 2008 5:44PM
If it's total mana and not base mana, you just swap weapons for higher INT ^_^
Drakkenfyre Aug 10th 2008 5:59PM
Well, the description originally said Spirit, so it looked wrong, lol.

it strips you, becouse when you use invis in combat, it means something went wrong and there is good chance you`ll die :P
this saves you some repair costs... or at least it should becouse im not sure if you can strip while in combat :P
SpaceDog Aug 10th 2008 5:21PM
Cool.
However, would it not now change to bets int gear for evocation since it's no longer based on spirit?
Or am I missing something?

the stripping when invis'd is just incase the group is about to wipe and you take no Equipment damage when you come out of invis.
lawnmowerasassin Aug 10th 2008 5:48PM
The taking gear off when you invis is probably for wipe situations in PVE. If you pop invis it will bring you out of combat long enough to take your gear off, but it may not be long enough to avoid going back into combat.

I use this religiously on my mage. Ports and teles are just a mouseover away. Sell my grays. Repair my items.

Minimalist: Live by it. Auto-repair, timestamps etc.
And a simple macro:
#showtooltip
/cast [button:1] teleport: Shattrath
/cast [button:2] portal: Shattrath
All your portal/tele needs in one button. So many addons would be never downloaded if people actually knew how to write macros.

Macros are fine I agree. Now All I need are more macro slots.
But I still have loads of addons though.

I'm sorry but I think this game has gotten ridiculous with this many add-ons. People are too damn lazy to actually just pay attention and have reflexes. I don't hate add-ons, but I think people are becoming too dependent on them to do everything for them.
jbodar Aug 10th 2008 7:19PM
Show me on this doll where the addon touched you.
Never heard of the old addage "work smarter, not harder" eh?
Ametrine Aug 10th 2008 7:31PM
Then don't use any.
Culhag Aug 10th 2008 8:23PM
Seems to do way too many things completely unrelated.

I was thinking the same thing. I already have addons doing much of the things noted above and more, many of which are Ace and more easily updated.
The one thing which caught my eye here was in the main image: The GUI for portals and teleports. TransporterFu isn't half as nice and often stays grayed out after combat.
According to the author, "This addon is entirely modularized. This means that you pick the features that you want, the rest do NOT stay in memory." So I think I'll give this a try and strip the excess away for now.

This works for any class. On my Shaman it restocks ankhs. It also does the CC abilities with any CC, not ust Polymorph. The repair and reagent buying is extremely fast, so I don't even have to stop moving as I run past a vendor and click on it. The healer/bandage and "Stop targeting my sheep" gets annoying in raids. I've turned it off by request of my fellow raiders. The invizibility/repair trick generally doesn't work for raid bosses, but it normally does in 5 mans which is good if you are in a bad pug.
This is a must have for all my characters.

wouldnt the stripping of your gear in invis be a bad idea? i primarily use invis as an aggro drop if i start dps too soon or if the tank is lacking in tps.
Blake Aug 11th 2008 10:33AM
"Prompts the mage to strip when using Invisibility while in a group and leaving combat."
So I'm just assuming a little "Yes/No" box pops up so if you're just dumping aggro, you say "No, I'd like to keep my gear equipped."
vestav Aug 11th 2008 12:48AM
The gear strip is primarily for PVE / raid situations. Typically, when a raid is wiping you can invis to get briefly out of combat and remove all your gear. However, when the invis fades the boss will aggro you again so it saves you some durability on raid wipes.
Mak Aug 11th 2008 8:45AM
Actually, I believe the stripping thing is in reference to The Invisible Man, of science-fiction literary and movie fame. If memory serves, he had to remove all of his clothes (and bandages around his face and hands) to become 'invisible'.
Another little in-joke from the world of Nerddery and Geekdom. ;)
