The gear strip is primarily for PVE / raid situations. Typically, when a raid is wiping you can invis to get briefly out of combat and remove all your gear. However, when the invis fades the boss will aggro you again so it saves you some durability on raid wipes.

Actually, I believe the stripping thing is in reference to The Invisible Man, of science-fiction literary and movie fame. If memory serves, he had to remove all of his clothes (and bandages around his face and hands) to become 'invisible'.
