As a 60 mage pre-BC, I never learned the portal to SW, I was only ever asked to port to IF or Darn, never Stormwind. Mainly because I was too stingy to pay 1.5g for the spell off the portal trainer. I could teleport to SW, but not a group portal.
Finally in Jojamba, we were getting the Hakkar buff and needed to go to SW to get the Ony buff before we went to MC and the RL asked me to "port to Stormwind pls" ... um... "I never learned it...." silence.

I explained I was too stingy to pay 1.5 (or 2.5g?) for a spell I may never use. I declined an offer from the mage leader of 1.5g and I teleported to SW to learn the spell.

Another story, I read about a warlock who never learned to summon imp until 34 or so. I have a lock too so that was amazing.
