Ask a Lore Nerd: Babies babies babies

Let's jump right in with Tom's trio of questions...
We know what happens when a human and orc cross-breed, but what about elf/human intermingling? Is it possible for the other races on Azeroth to breed and are there any such results of that union?
Elf/Human crossbreeds are definitely supported by lore, as well as a whole mess of other combinations. Arator the Redeemer in Hellfire Peninsula is a Human/Elf Hybrid, for example, and there are plenty more around. Other combinations are valid as well. Rexxar is an Orc/Ogre Hybrid. Gross, I know, but oh well. There are a lot more examples you can add to those that are scattered around the world(s).
There are no hard rules in place dictating who can and cannot interbreed, but it's pretty safe to assume the races similar to one another are compatible. I would bet Dwarves and Gnomes can shack up and spawn, for example, but probably not a Gnome and a Tauren. That's just me talking, though. I could be wrong. Let's pray very, very hard that I'm not wrong.
Why the distinct lack of children for most of the Azerothian races in WoW? Humans, Dranei, Blood Elves, and Orcs are prevalent - where's the rest?
They exist, they just aren't heavily represented in WoW itself. They only really seem to design child models when they're going to specifically put them to use. An orphanage somewhere, or the Children's Week holiday. They just don't have a real reason to model out children for every single race. They do have baby forms of many of them, though. Go check out the orphanage in Shattrath, they have Tauren, Gnome and Night Elf babies that I can remember off of the top of my head. There may be more.
There's no lore reason why there aren't more children, I am sure there are some people going at it like bunnies somewhere. Generally, adventurers just aren't going to go finding a murder of children for no good reason.
In-game mages can portal to capital cities and a couple select towns. In WC3 it seemed as if most mages could portal anywhere. What happened to this magical knowledge?
Again, just game balance. I don't imagine there's any lore here. It'd just be pretty crazy if you could teleport around wherever you wanted, and pretty amazingly unfair to the other classes. As it is, Mage transportation is way superior to everyone else.
Reeferhoof asks...
What's the raid instance behind Stratholme? After you kill the last boss, there's a portcullis located off to the side. In there is a raid instance portal that's barred off, what gives?
I can't say this with 100% certainty, but that portal probably was supposed to go to Naxxramas, or whatever the first incarnation of Naxxramas was on Blizzard's concept table. It's possible Naxx was just going to be a raid deeper in Stratholme or something like that, we don't really know. So far it's unused, and unless I'm mistaken we don't have any solid indicator of where that was supposed to lead. Naxxramas is a safe guess, though. They just found a better way to implement it.
VSUReaper asks pair of questions...
What is the big tree-like thing outside of Thrall's chambers? Is it a dehydrated skin from a pit lord or something?
Edited for clarity: That's almost exactly what it is. It's the armor of Mannoroth, the demon Grom Hellscream killed at the end of Warcraft III, hung on a tree-thing.
What is the big rotting skeleton from in HFP, near the pools of Aggonar?
That big rotting skeleton is... Aggonar! He was a really ridiculously large Pit Lord that got ganked and now his bloodcandies have poisoned the surrounding area.
An anonymous individual wrote in to ask...
My question is simple, why can't Night Elves by Paladins?
As far as the overall lore of Warcraft, they probably can be Paladins if they devote themselves to the Light, no problem. Almost anyone is capable of it. When it comes to WoW, however, the classes that races can play as are just the classes that would be most common across their entire population. Most Night Elves worship Elune as their primary deity and center of faith and the concept of The Light is pretty new to them. They're certainly capable of being Paladins from a story point of view, but from a gameplay point of view they just picked the 'most likely' classes.
There are Human Hunters in the lore and even as NPCs in WoW, but you can't play one. I'm certain Blood Elves have Warriors in their ranks, but they'd be a minority since it's not really a lifestyle many of them would take given their culture, so you can't play one of those, either.
Ian wrote in to ask...
Is there any reason in lore to explain why Blood elves dont have Warrior as a playable class?
Hey, how convenient! Check out my answer to the previous question.
James wrote in with our last question for today and it's quite a doozy, and it contains Wrath of the Lich King spoilers. If you want to stay spoiler free, you can skip straight down to the Comments section to ask any questions you may have for a future installment.
I saw the videos of the Death Knight starting quests, where Darion Mograine wields the Corrupted Ashbringer. It led me to a few questions: Where is ol' Alex the Ashbringer Mograine these days? How did his son get the sword? I did some digging, and found out that the old paladin tier 3 vendor from Light's hope cathedral is up in Northrend, and when talking about Naxxramas, he mentions that Mograine disappeared after the events in Azeroth, and has not been seen since, and nobody is sure who has taken his place in Northrend's Naxx. As cool as a read as this was, it brought up more questions:
How did he manage to abscond from Naxx? Is he semi-antonymous? Any idea what has happened to him after he gave the sword to Darion? Is Darion the son who was mentioned in at the Scarlet Monestary during the old Ashbringer event, or is there another unrevealed member of the Mograine clan?
In addition, I have one very nagging question. If you've seen the video of the battle for Light's Hope Cathedral (and if you haven't, I suggest that you do) you may have noticed a few things. First and foremost, when the Lich King confronts Tirion Fordring at LHC, he is unable to prevail. Earlier in the fight, Tirion mentioned that Arthas "Knows what lies beneath this chapel."
What could be buried beneath LHC, that would pose a threat to even Arthas?
I really, really wish I could give you a concrete answer on these things, but right now there isn't one. Blizzard is going to be putting out a comic about Alexandros Mograine starting in early September, and hopefully that will clear quite a bit of this up. The whole Light's Hope Chapel, Alexandros and Darion Mograine, Ashbringer mess will hopefully be more or less cleared up. Right now, we really have no idea what the deal is except that Naxxramas needs a 4th Horseman. My money is on Baron Rivendare simply because it'd be awesome.
Kind of a side note to the above, Darion Mograine passes the Ashbringer to Tirion Fordring. Although Inquisitor Fairbanks once told us that the Ashbringer was beyond cleansing, the blade seems to be purified in an instant. Any idea what's up with this sudden reversal? Could the thing beneath LHC have led to the cleansing of the uncleansable?
As far as what Fairbanks had to say... well, unless the comic book takes us to Outland to retrieve Darion, you can probably consider it null and void or chalk it up to him being a crazy, addled undead coot.
That's all for today, folks. I'll be back next week to answer more of your questions, so if you've got 'em, post em!

What exactly are ogres? Where do they come from? And why are they everywhere?
bluenei Aug 10th 2008 9:42PM
um, you completely ignored the "Why are there no Night Elf paladins" question, the reason is because they are all women, and you also only ever see a few, the most well known of which is Tyranda Whisperwind
and you are wrong, run live stratholm, Timmy the cruel is a five year old, and about the closest thing to a baby undead you will get
Piper Aug 10th 2008 8:59PM
Gender has nothing to do with paladinhood. Tyrande is also not a paladin, she's a High Priestess, which is an entirely separate class mechanic from priests, paladins, or any other such critter.
Nelves technically don't have priests as they work in the game, since they don't believe in the loose conglomeration of ideals that is the Light. They have an actual, bona fide Goddess, Elune, so Blizz had to homogenize High Priestesses as they exist in lore into the priest class.
Tyrande's 'class' in Warcraft III is actually closer to the hunter class we have today with a few magic abilities thrown in because she's awesome like that. Sentinels are more concerned with kicking butt than contemplating Puzzle Piece Jesus, and their religious culture reflects that.
TL;DR: nelves don't have paladins because that's not how their religious or cultural systems roll. I'm sure there are a few nelves that believe in the Light and COULD become paladins, but for the sake of streamlining the class system, they decided to ignore the anomalies inherent in any race.

It's likely that there are no notable female paladins because the paladin organizations are chauvinistic and would disencourage women from rising in the ranks, but you'll see plenty of female paladins in the Scarlet Monastery and such.

Gnome/tauren hybrids could happen...
It's just have to be a male gnome and a female tauren, otherwise, well...
...Lemme put it this way...
"Oh, oh yes! Oh, baby, I'm gonna... gonna... nngh!"
*fwoosh!* "Wheee, I'm a bottlerocket!" *thud* "Owie."

You overlooked engineering. *gnome female crafts Turkey Baster 3000* [Use: inseminate. Requires one male toon to cast. Refractory cooldown of thirty minutes. No effect unless Ovulation buff is in effect.]

To the LHC thing only 2 things come to mind that could stop Arthas.....#1 is Uther....#2 is possible his fathers ashes?!?! they never quite said what happend to them other then getting dumped out. Also reguarding the ashbringer iam a big fan of the lore with it and it seems it was cleansed when passed trion plus when fairbanks said it was uncleanseable he didnt know trion was alive and lets face it blizz has 5 diffent storys with this sword and many rumors from npcs in game for all we know they take the corrupted ash out and there goes the SM event and then they use this new story for the ashbringer and thats it =(
Blaurhg Aug 10th 2008 8:24PM
Tyrande is not a paladin.
LK Aug 10th 2008 11:55PM
There is that theory that the Ashbringer sword is "alive" and could be a Naaru.
In fact, when pappy Mograine first found the crystal center-piece that powers the Ashbringer, it was brimming with darkness and corruption until a quick holy light/smite fixed that up. Given this precedent of having the sword "living" and very much malleable to light and dark, I wouldn't think it would be too much of a stretch for the sword to be purified instantly when given to the hands of the holiest and the most badass Paladin in WoW.
iKandiman Aug 11th 2008 9:48AM
If you go into Old Hillsbrad Inn...they're playing with a void crystal of some sort that they purify with the "light" This I believe becomes part of Ashbringer. What was corrupt became uncorrupt then corrupted again, is my theory.
Greg Aug 11th 2008 12:44AM
There are a few notable female Paladins. Lady Liadrin, Matriarch of the Blood Knights. High General Abbendis, Military Commander of the Scarlet Crusade. And Scarlet Commander Marjhan, Scarlet Ambassador to the Argent Dawn.
...The fact that they are or at one point were evil women is neither here nor there...

There are a lot more babies tucked around the world if you just know where to look. In the northern mountains between Nagrand and Zangamarsh, there's a little building up there with some named children, I think they're a tribute to kids of Blizz employees. There are other similar areas, but most are very out of the way, sort of easter eggs. To see the location I mentioned, you'll need a flying mount, a good eye, and some time to kill.

the Ashbringer... **SPOLIERIFIC! DON'T LOOK!**
The suggestion proposed that the blade clensing when thrown to Tirion as a sign of Darion's alliegence change is probably the most logical/symbolic answer. People have complained after doing that event that they still really didn't understand how the DK's could leave Arthas so uneventfully.
If you put it into the perspective that one of Arthas's protege's, possibly the greatest DK aside from the Lich King himself, "saw the light" and turned, that could be significantly awe inspiring for all the soliders and DK's under Darion to follow their commander to fight for their eventual redemption as they saw Ashbringer come back to the light and to life.
The whole event is more symbolic than with which the masses would be pleased, but rationalizing it, I feel better about that whole scenario now.
As for what's under LHC, one could only speculate. As the Ashbringer will probably have its story revised for the comic, WotLK, AND for whatever quests the player will do to eventually GET the Ashbringer, one could argue that someone of importance's ashes are under LHC.
HOWEVER, I don't think the ashes would 'fit' to be Terenas Menethil II's or Uther the Lightbringer's as BOTH were killed in cold blood by the DK Arthas. To argue that they somehow make him lose his powers after he murdered them could suggest a curse, but that would continue to be speculative. I'm honestly still REALLY hoping they'll bring back Lothar somehow, and that's whose ashes are under LHC, as he was basically the 'man' prior to his death.
It also could be something with Calia Menethil, Arthas's sister, but I could continue like this all day. Everything's just as much speculation as the last. Ironically enough, I've enjoyed some of the player theories much more than the actual lore at points. App to be lore writers for Blizz!! ;P
Menalaous Aug 11th 2008 9:29AM
While there is probably lore and other good reasons to put a naru underneath the LHC in WOTLK I dont think there is. It would be dead and a void. To our knowledge, before the exodar came there were no Naru on Azeroth (actively). M'uru was stolen by Kael'thas and brought to SM after they post WC3FT at some point but before BC. And when that massive fortress was built to ensure nothing else came out of the portal, no one reported seeing a massive being of light come through. There have been no other signs of ships on Azeroth (ie no giant crystal mountains [Oshugun]). That doesnt leave a lot of room for a naru in lore, but blizzard could pull it out of its ass and say its been there for decades/centuries buried and sealed by the first clirics of lorderan, though that would suck lore wise. Also it would leave loops as to why "stormwind" paladins could still call on the light if it had been sealed off after the scourge during which no one would have been maintaining it and so it would have died and there would be an Azerothian version of Aunchindoun.
That being said, I would they will make it worth the hype and the lore. I mean the leader of the paladins against what was Uthers personal apprentience and presumable replacement as the head of the light become the first "modern" death knight (ie not orc souls in human bodies like gorefiend") squaring off over something so important. I personaly have no idea however what it may be and nothing to back it in lore.
Maybe its the Sword of A Thousand Truths :P and Arthas knows it can one hit him?
alt255 Aug 11th 2008 4:46PM
As far as the "Ashbringer" being beyong cleansing, maybe they were talking about mograine himself, aka the ashbringer... He is a boss in nax..

I have a few questions:
1. If Gnomeregan is only a mid-level instance, why don't some of the more powerful gnomes reclaim it? I mean after a while of getting stronger I'm sure the gnomes could eventually retake their capital.
2. Does Blizzard have any plans of releasing something like a WoW Lore Encyclopedia or anything? You know with all the history of Azeroth and what not? I know their website has the whole history as well as WoWwiki having all the lore, but I want a palpable source of info to further my nerdiness.
3. Assuming the world is round and not flat, why don't people just sail around the other side of the world to avoid the giant maelstrom altogether?
4. Is there and in formation regarding that gated instance portal in the canal district of SW?
