BigRedKitty: Moths
Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the Hunter class, sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
Ferocity Pets! These are the face-rippers, the squishie-killers, the pets that make us proud to be a Beastmaster hunter! Cats, Devilsaurs, Raptors, Wolves! Yeeha!
Moths? That's what we're being told, yes.
So we tamed a level 69 Moth from Netherstorm, took it to Shadowmoon Valley, and let the fun begin.
You know how devilsaurs are supposedly filled with helium? Well we think moths are made of a carbon-fiber and Kevlar composite. Holy smokes, foshizzle!
You are invited to download the YouTube version (41MB) of this movie here, and the full-sized version (248MB) here.
Note: We say in the movie that Moths are "exotic". They are not; our mistake. They are new in the Wrath of the Lich King, but any talent-spec hunter can tame one.
As always, a great big Thank You to the WoW Insider editors for allowing us to publish this movie both here and on our little blog at the same time!

I cant wait to get my hands on one of these!
Let all the other hunters run around with their giant devilsaurs. Nothing is more humiliating than being torn apart by a butterfly
MisterMoose Aug 11th 2008 9:25AM
I think "Mothra" might be the most common name for these pets.

Seeing a moth 'jump' ranks among one of the most ridiculous (read: awesome) things I've ever seen.
Chris Anthony Aug 11th 2008 9:28AM
Holy hell, I hope they fix the wing-flapping issue when the moth is moving.
...they do consider that an "issue", right?
Raze Aug 11th 2008 11:45AM
Ever seen an insect fly before? If I had to guess, it's working as intended.
Chris Anthony Aug 11th 2008 12:04PM
...uh, yes, I've seen moths fly. Have *you*? They don't work that hard.
Other insects, whose wing area is much smaller in proportion to their body mass? Sure. But moths and butterflies don't flap like that unless they're dying.

dear big red kitty: i think i love you. your videos and commentary are teh awesome. i watch every one, and enjoy them tremendously. i don't even play a hunter, and most of the time i have no clue what you are talking about, but i don't care. i've said it before, but i wish all warcraft videos were done this way. please keep 'em coming.

Pretty cool. Seemed to be a little too much wing flapping though. Or was that just me?
I'm really looking forward to a pure tank pet personally, but overall playing hunters in WoTLK is looking like a lot of fun.
Chris Anthony Aug 11th 2008 10:57AM
It's not just you.
If it helps (re: the tanking pet), BRK has a Tenacity-pet video up, showcasing the Warp Stalker's tanking ability: http://www.bigredkitty.net/2008/08/09/brk-uvuros-movie/

I have wanted to tame a moth since the day I saw one on my Shaman. That was one of the driving motivations for me to level a hunter alt to 70. The day I reached Outlands, I went straight to Terokkar to see what level I'd need to be to get one... 62! ...so I trudged on with only that goal in mind. Reach 62 so I can tame a moth in Terokkar. The minute I hit 62 I headed to the forest in search of my new pet. Oh how excited I was to know that I would be unleashing a Beastial Wrathed moth on some plate-wearing meathead...
Alas... my dreams were shattered as I attempted to tame the beast only to be greeted with an error instead of scrolling hearts...
I now have something to look forward to... a reason to purchase Wrath... well played, Blizz. /cheer
p.s. I diagree with you MisterMoose... I'm 100% sure that the most common name for a tamed moth will be Butterfree (http://www.serebii.net/potw/012.shtml) closely followed by Beautifly (http://www.serebii.net/potw/267.shtml).

Something I just found... interesting:
"Throughout Europe, the moth was thought to be a harbinger of war, pestilence, and death to man and beast alike. Its appearance in a candlelit room, especially if it managed to snuff out the candle, was an omen of death in the house. In France, dust from its wings was thought to cause blindness if it entered the eye. The moth brought fear and panic in Brittany when large numbers appeared at the time of a widespread pestilence."

Seeing these pet movies make me wonder if certain other previously untameable beasts are available in WotLK. If I were to level a hunter to 80 with the end talent in mind, I'd want to go for a hydra.
A little odd, sure, but if devilsaurs of all things are possible, I'd want to see a little love for what is probably my favourite type of creature in the game.
As for this specific movie, I just hope that if the sheer amount of wing-flapping on those things is not reduced, that I avoid being around hunters that have them out altogether. I would find that more annoying than a crocolisk's constant growling (the moths just barely edge out because at least I can mute the crocolisks....at the expense of everything else).

I'm wondering if deer (such as those available in Azuremyst and Ashenvale) or talbuks will be tamable.
phynias Aug 11th 2008 3:42PM
this is the dumbest thing ever. moths are considered a ferocity pet but ravagers aren't?? they are ravagers their name alone means equates to ferocious.
MRkity Aug 11th 2008 4:19PM
I propose!
Sleep Powder:Sleeps the target for up to 10 seconds.
Enaress Aug 12th 2008 3:22AM
Moths are not exotic pets (in the video he said they were exotic), they are just tamable now in Wrath.

Well I dont care if this thing can solo Illidan. Until blizzard fixes the high velocity wing flapping. I wont be taming it. With the hunter just standing there the wing flapping is acceptable. But as soon as the hunter starts running down the road. The wing flapping velocity and sound would just drive me and Im sure others, INSANE. I really dont think that moths wings need to flap that fast. But thats JMO.
