Engineering goodies in the latest beta build
Hot on the heels of flying carpets and spring-loaded cloak expanders comes word of a few more interesting crafted items in Wrath of the Lich King, especially some engineered ones, this time spotted by World of Raids in the latest beta build. Check their page for the full list, but here are some of my favorites:
- [Cooking] Delicious Roasted Boar - Creates a delicious roast boar platter for you and your friends to enjoy. Group food! Mages, look out.
- Blacksmithing gets recipes to socket bracers and gloves, each requiring four Saronite Bars and usable a level 60 or higher item. (For more new blacksmithing patterns, check out our rundown of recipes added in the latest beta patch!)
- Engineering:
- Scrapbot construction kit - Creates a mechanical vendor that buys anything. The scrapbot leaves after 5 min. I hope the mats will be relatively cheap. This is a great idea, as it's one of the best parts of the new repair bots, for when you don't need repairs.
- Nitro Boosts - Permanently attaches overpowered nitro boosts to a pair of boots, allowing a skilled engineer to greatly increase run speed for until cancelled. The nitro boosts can only be activated every 5 minutes. There's that rocket-boots enchant. There's also a parachute cloak one listed.
- Hyperspeed Accelerators - Permanently attaches hyperspeed accelerators to a pair of gloves, allowing a skilled engineer to increase their haste rating by 340 for 8 sec. The gloves can only be activated every few minutes.
- Gnomish Lightning Generator - Generates a bolt of lightning to strike an enemy for 2250 to 2750 Nature damage. This entire device is made of metal, and the bolt occasionally hits you.
There's more cool new stuff for engineers listed at World of Raids. This might even be enough to get me to take engineering on my upcoming Paladin; it's always seemed gimmicky and PvP-oriented to me, but Blizzard seems to have realized that they need to move away from that.

Nice! This is exactly what engineers need and will rock for PvP - all the utility of being able to use parachute cloak, rocket boots, etc without having to swap out your gear and wait for the 30sec CD first... perfect for emergencies (falling off cliffs in AB etc) and the boots.. well.. awesome for chasing / escaping someone :D

Please, please, please... let Armorsmiths follow in the footsteps of Engineers and use the Ancient Bulwark buff onto any chest they wear.
Charlie Aug 11th 2008 9:46PM
Nice.
They need to add flavor text/change the tooltip to make the Lightning Generator more... gnomy.
All of the professions are shaping up quite nicely. I don't really see any profession getting shafted in the gear, as well as the "cool" factor yet. Engy and Tailoring are in the lead w/ bikes and carpets though, definatley.

These upcoming engineer goodies are making me so giddy, and I'm not even an engineer, lol. :D I'm really excited with some of the great new things Blizz has in store for professions.
And, as an avid cook in the game, I'm ecstatic about the delicious roasted boar recipe. I would love it if Blizz ran with this sort've idea and created other cute group recipes, like "picnic basket" and such. A great way to sit everyone down in a raid and have them all eat the same thing when it's time to drink/eat. Cooking is by far one of my top favorite professions in the game, even if it's secondary. I absolutely love it.

Ok, that's kinda cool. I'm not sure that the cloak thing or the boots thing will really clear up my inventory anyway, I mean I'll still want +12 agility (or haste) on my cloak, but that haste to gloves thing might be pretty sweet.
Here's a question, does the Personal Electromagnetic Pulse Generator disrupting mechanicals mean just robot mobs (Gnomer and.... what else?) or robot mobs and siege engines? And what is the "medium siege damage" on the Saronite Bomb? Does that hurt buildings or buildings and tanks? If they attack siege engines then I see engineers rocking Wintergasp.
And what's our passive, Riding skill for bikes and copters?
Ingram Aug 11th 2008 11:42PM
Gathering professions have a passive, not crafting professions. If I read your post right, if not, apologies.
ninjasuperspy Aug 12th 2008 8:08AM
@Ingram: Well, Alchemy gets Mixology and JC gets Gem Perfection. I'm not convinced that other crafting professions don't have something that we haven't seen yet.

I call shenanigans...
(From WorldofRaids.com)
Mirror Image (NYI) - level 80 spell
10% of base
Instant cast - 3 min cooldown
Creates 3 copies of the caster nearby, which cast spells and attack the mage's enemies. Lasts 30 sec.

No offense, but I thought this post was about Engineering and other Professions, not Mage QQ.

Spring loaded cloak is awesome. I will always use this in AB.
Completely unrelated to Engineering:
WoR is citing a 'Glyph of the Red Lynx' that gives druids an alternate cat-form. I'm not a druid, but this is really cool. Thanks for pointing it out, Insider!

Glad I switched over to Engineering the other day...
Samman Aug 11th 2008 11:42PM
Still, even though engineering got attention...there is NO way it'll be cheap with mining. You'll still need 300g mats that you can't make and have to make that money. Not that I am saying some don't have money, but that IS a lot of money for some people. One day you'll end up with a few G for not mining in the week.
Radiophonic Aug 11th 2008 11:49PM
As an engineer, I'm still not impressed. Hey, we're hard to please.
Raze Aug 12th 2008 3:28AM
Likewise. The enchants to our boots, cloaks, gloves and belts are fun and all, but I'd like to see a few things like the mechanical dragonling and the ability to make non-combat pets every so often. I also hope Engineering doesn't get too much more emphasis on PVP this go round, lest it become the new min-maxing profession again.
If anyone can clarify two things about the scrapbot: does it repair items, and is it a trinket or gadget that is used from the inventory that doesn't break after each use?
Penguirrel Aug 12th 2008 1:27AM
The construction kit looks like it costs some serious mats, however, the CD on it is 15 minutes and it stands for 5 minutes. I wonder if it is a reusable effect, that would be nice, spend a lot up front to always be able to break out this guy to sell to. Make grinding sessions in the middle of nowhere more bearable.
mrluohua Aug 12th 2008 1:09PM
So, the mats to create this 'scrap bot' are pretty serious? What is pretty serious? 5g? 10g? 25g? More? I'm sure there will be inflation, but currently when I'm grinding on my 70 now, my inventory fills up about 8-12g of 'grey' junk. If the vendor cost 10g to create, that's only leaving 2g of profit. What if the scrap bot takes 15g? Thats a 3g loss. Why would I spend 3g to empty my bags when I could just 'drop' (destroy) all the grey junk instead?
Yell-O Aug 12th 2008 1:34AM
Nice.
Adapting the engineering cool stuff into any item like an enchant is a great move.
I /salute blizz for it.
Now lets just hope that those buffs last and dont get nerfed lol.
Alveredus Aug 12th 2008 2:21AM
I'll be impressed if these stack with item enchants.
The blacksmith socket addition would appear to so hopefully these will, especially since the effects are so specialized.
If it comes in PLACE of an enchant then as a Fury warrior, I want CC added to my gear.
Ie. Ultrasafe Dimension Riftmaker: Permanently attaches an Ultrasafe Dimensional Riftmaker to a belt, allowing a skilled engineer to banish a target for 30 seconds. The polarity may reverse and banish the user instead. The belt can only be activated every 10 minutes.
Fletch Aug 12th 2008 1:42AM
The idea of an engineering vendor bot is nice, but it'll be yet something else that the group expects the engineer to get out for free. If it's anything like the repair bot then these things won't exactly be cheap to make and we gain very little benefit from them. At the least I would like to see a percentage of the money they take go to the engineer instead of disappearing into the twisting nether.
Alveredus Aug 12th 2008 2:23AM
BTW, I have an engineering suggestion thread HERE:
