Engineering goodies in the latest beta build
Hot on the heels of flying carpets and spring-loaded cloak expanders comes word of a few more interesting crafted items in Wrath of the Lich King, especially some engineered ones, this time spotted by World of Raids in the latest beta build. Check their page for the full list, but here are some of my favorites:
- [Cooking] Delicious Roasted Boar - Creates a delicious roast boar platter for you and your friends to enjoy. Group food! Mages, look out.
- Blacksmithing gets recipes to socket bracers and gloves, each requiring four Saronite Bars and usable a level 60 or higher item. (For more new blacksmithing patterns, check out our rundown of recipes added in the latest beta patch!)
- Engineering:
- Scrapbot construction kit - Creates a mechanical vendor that buys anything. The scrapbot leaves after 5 min. I hope the mats will be relatively cheap. This is a great idea, as it's one of the best parts of the new repair bots, for when you don't need repairs.
- Nitro Boosts - Permanently attaches overpowered nitro boosts to a pair of boots, allowing a skilled engineer to greatly increase run speed for until cancelled. The nitro boosts can only be activated every 5 minutes. There's that rocket-boots enchant. There's also a parachute cloak one listed.
- Hyperspeed Accelerators - Permanently attaches hyperspeed accelerators to a pair of gloves, allowing a skilled engineer to increase their haste rating by 340 for 8 sec. The gloves can only be activated every few minutes.
- Gnomish Lightning Generator - Generates a bolt of lightning to strike an enemy for 2250 to 2750 Nature damage. This entire device is made of metal, and the bolt occasionally hits you.
There's more cool new stuff for engineers listed at World of Raids. This might even be enough to get me to take engineering on my upcoming Paladin; it's always seemed gimmicky and PvP-oriented to me, but Blizzard seems to have realized that they need to move away from that.

It should be noted that the gloves and bracer sockets seem to be blacksmith only.
Only the belt socket patern creates a useable object so I guess only this one will be available to everyone.

So, the Saronite grenade says: (45 yd range, instant) - Inflicts 540 to 900 Fire damage and incapacitates targets for 3 sec in a 3 yard radius. Any damage will break the effect. Unreliable against targets higher than level 90.
"Unreliable against targets higher than level 90."
This has peaked my curiosity, since I wouldn't expect many things to be above 84.

Its been the same with all engineering grenades for a while now, for example
http://thottbot.com/i23737
It states that it is unreliable against anything above Lv 80 despite there being nothing that high in Live. I figure its just a pre-emptive thing on Blizzards' behalf so that you dont run around with dirt cheap lowbie grenades stunning everybody ;)

Blizzard I hate you! (okay, I dont.)
Every time when I see something really cool engineering stuff, I have to pick up engineering again... After some time it gets boring and I change profession... then I again see something cool engineering stuff and here we go again...

Glove haste. Sounds awesome. I hope "every few minutes" is less than 5.

Un-nerf the battle chicken!

I'm pretty tired of engineering abilities that have a chance to hurt you when you use them. Yeah the joke is funny and cute for the early engineering goodies, but when you become a Super Ultra Grand Master Engineer shouldn't you be smart enough to start making stuff that works a bit better?
This joke taken too far by blizzard is why you don't see any of the existing gadgets actually get used anywhere.
The time it takes to use the gadget is time you could have done more damage if you just used your own class abilities, and..those don't hurt you.
You don't see blacksmithing items like swords that have a 1 in 2 chance of hitting the wielder in the face do you? No that would be stupid. And it's just as stupid when it's a high level engineering item.

Still no way for engineers to make money, no change from BC.
Who cares about scape-o-bots, there are vendors everywhere to dump your junk. I like to see the portable mail post, or portable ATM machine.
Make these items BOE so we can craft them and sell them on AH.
As it stands engineering should be a 2nd profession, it yields no money making chances.

Group food for everyone. Sap is getting expanded options making it as powerful as Polymorph. Lackluster talents for mages in Wrath.
I hope there's something really good waiting in the wings for mages, but the more I hear, the more I consider switching my main to my warlock.
