Ask a Beta Tester: Blacksmithing and sockets, revisited

Do blacksmithing sockets stack with enchants?
The answer is yes. (At least for gloves and bracers -- there are currently no enchants available in the game for belts.) Please, there's no need to keep asking. Really!
Orno had a question about a different blacksmithing pattern I didn't know about until he mentioned it:
Is Socket One-hand Weapon able to socket main-hands and is it also BS only?
Though this ability has been data-mined from the expansion files, it isn't currently available from trainers. So the pattern is either a random drop or it simply hasn't yet been added. Either way, we haven't run into anayone who knows it to confirm one way or the other. Sorry, Orno, but you know as much as anyone about this one!For more of your questions -- and our answers! -- read on! But if you're the sort who wants to avoid spoilers, turn back now. We're aiming to avoid major story spoilers, but this feature is all about beta content and we can't talk about the beta without giving a few things away.
Aurion asked....
I've heard that Rogues will be able to keep their combo points even if the mob is dead and can use them on the next one, is it true?
Though it is impossible to predict what Blizzard may or may not do tomorrow, in the present build, combo points function exactly the way they do on the live realms: the combo points you gain are target-specific.ironlade asked....
How fast do Death Knights generate runic power? I've been looking at the skills and some are like 50-70 runic power so if the gain of power is slower than rage a lot of the skills are going to be unused.
A Death Knight gains runic power by using runes. You start a round of combat with six runes and their use is primarily limited by their cooldown. In playing my Death Knight, this felt much faster than gaining rage: though you're restricted from immediate use of aiblities requiring runic power, you'll quickly build up
James asked....
What about items such as the Frozen Shadoweave and Primal Mooncloth sets? Sets that rely on whether or not you are healing. Are they the same stats with different set bonuses?
They are unchanged except for the spell power change -- which effects all gear, past and present. If it had +healing on it, it now has spell power. If it had spell damage on it, it now has spell power. The convesion of damage to spell power is about one to one, whereas the conversion of healing to spell power is about two to one. (Before anyone reading this starts to panic, they've greatly improved the coefficients for healing spells -- my heals are hitting significantly harder than they do on live, with all the same gear.) Other stats, however, are the same.
Do you still need to be spec'd to either shadow tailoring or mooncloth to use the other? Does it even matter?
The spec requirement still stands.
How does it work with pets that are attached to an item? Like say the bloodsail hat?
and h8rain asked....
Or pets that require reagents?
I don't have any pets that are attached to a specific item, but I do have a couple of Winters' Veil pets that require a reagent to summon. These pets do not go into the pet interface -- they remain an item in your inventory and still require a reagent to summon. This considered, I'd guess that pets that are attached to an actual, usable item would function similarly.
Gune asked....
I remember hearing in a podcast that one of the devs at WWI hinted that we might be getting duel talents specs and be able to switch between them in wotlk. Has anyone heard about this? Did I misunderstand the comment or maybe it was a result of one of my crack-induced colmas? I have not seen anything regarding this in any of the beta info I've read.
You're remembering correctly. At WWI (and some time after), there was public talk of Blizzard implementing some way to have two talent specs per character, to ease the pain caused by respeccing back and forth from PvP to PvE every week. However, there's not a hint of such a feature on the beta realms yet.
Are there any changes in Azeroth except SW? Like the Sentinel Hill inn's roof fixed? Lakeshire's bridge? Anything on Horde side?
After taking a whirlwind tour of Azeroth, I can safely say that there's very little changed. There's the new Stormwind Harbor, Dalaran relocated, Naxxramas relocated (and Ebon Hold appeared), and the new Straholme wing to Caverns of Time, and new Zeppelin towers outside of Orgrimmar and Undercity to send Horde off to Northrend. But towns in Westfall and Redridge are still rebuilding. (Seriously guys, how long does it take to fix a roof or build a bridge? They built a whole harbor in Stormwind while those workers have been slacking off!) Uldum is unchanged. The expidition into Un'goro is still stranded in Un'goro. The Cenarion Circle are still in Silithus fighting off an unending invasion of Silithid.
The old world is relatively static, the old story the same for the benefit, perhaps, of players just jumping in for the first time.
Satanael asked....
I am very interested in playing a Death Knight as a MT in the expansion and I would like to know how they are stacking up in the beta as a tank... do they have what it takes to be a end game tank thus far.
I haven't had the opportunity to do any serious raiding in the beta (as you might guess, everyone's keeping busy questing and leveling), but from the few instances I've run, Death Knights seem to be perfectly capable at tanking. Of course, there's a lot of difference between a casual entry-level 5-man run and an end-game raid: time will tell us whether Death Knights are viable in the long run. However, it's clear Blizzard wants them to be. Blue poster Ghostcrawler tells us:
- Our goal in Lich King is for all 4 tanking classes to be viable.
- We would like for tanking to be a little more fun. I'm going to leave this vague on purpose, but it is definitely a concern.
- In 5-player instances, most warriors, druids, paladins and death knights should be effective tanks. The healing specs may have a harder time than the dps specs. Arms wariors, Fury warriors, Ret paladins, Ferals and most DKs should do fine.
- In 5-player heroics, the expectation is that the tank has a heavy investment in tanking talents and appropriate gear. Arms warriors might have trouble tanking a heroic unless they overgear the instance.
- For raids, we want all 4 tank classes to be viable. If your group has e.g. a Prot paladin and Feral druid as main tanks with appropriate gear and reasonable skill, you should be good to go.
- This is a shift in philosophy for us. Previously, we sometimes tried to steer Ferals as being better off tanks than main tanks. We also expected specific classes to appear in the raid. Our new assumption is that you might have any of the 4 tanking classes as a tank. We are trying to achieve as much parity as we can among the 4 tanks without making them too similar. If nearly all guilds want the same class as their MT, we've failed.

A question for Blizzard: How much notice will we have of the WotLK release date?
Failing an answer from Blizz, when was the TBC release date announced?
Blayed Aug 13th 2008 11:37AM
If i remember correctly, the release date of BC wasn't set in stone until about 1 month before the date came about.
Blayed Aug 13th 2008 11:42AM
Also, 1 month/1.5 months before BC came out, patch 2.0 came out, giving the BC talent trees (even though full 61 point builds weren't possible), and many other old-world changes were made, to lighten the load on the servers on release date. I expect to see the same implemented for WotLK.
papawapa Aug 13th 2008 12:23PM
I don't have the blue post handy but I believe they wanted to cut down the lag between the implementation of patch 3.0 and the release of WotLK. It may have been the case that with TBC patch 2.0 was released a month in advance to partially sate the consumers as the expansion experienced a delay of some weeks past a previously announced release date. So maybe we'll see patch 3.0 in a matter of a few weeks before WotLK barring a late delay.

I'm not going to dig up the blue posts and press releases. Some of the info can be found right here on WoWInsider.
The Wrath release is currently slated for the fourth quarter of this year. That's never a guarantee, of course, as game releases are often pushed back. I have a feeling that Blizz would REALLY like to have it out before Christmas, so I'm looking for a early to mid December release.
Also, they announced that they would release patch 3.0, complete with the new talents, before Wrath. It was said that the release wouldn't be as far in advance as BC was, and estimated that the patch would hit 1-2 weeks before WotLK hit the shelves.
Pure conjecture here, but I suspect that Wrath will be released with only the Naxx raid fully fleshed out. The great majority of WoW players won't get to 80 and progress through the heroics and Naxx within the first few months, allowing them extra time to work on the later raids, and patch them in.

We know that there's a new kind of cloth to be found in the expansion, but do the new tailoring recipes require shadow/moon/spell cloth? Will the specialization carry over to a new form of these cloths, or become meaningless?
Similarly, do any recipes found yet require Primal Nether?
zappo Aug 13th 2008 11:31AM
Because primals will be old school come expansion time, and the fact that these cloths require those - it's safe to assume that primal moon/spell/shadow cloth will be completely obsolete. Keep in mind that because the gear reset won't be all that harsh, crafting some epic gear for people who come through at 70 or so will be far better then the level 71 greens people will get, so crafting the old stuff might be somewhat viable. For that matter with spellpower being on gear, they'll probably have to rethink the specialization stuff if they even decide to go that route in the expansion.
I haven't seen any updates on the bag situation so those might still sell pretty well. I'd rather give a tailor 600g then pay 1200g to an npc modeled after someone I can't stand. Herb bags might also increase in popularity.
Terian Aug 13th 2008 11:31AM
I doubt that the new patterns will require primal anything, due to the presence of the new crystallized earth/water/etc and those becoming Eternal versions...i.e Eternal Earth instead of Primal earth etc. So instead of using Primal Nether, we're likely to see something like Eternal Nether or the like in it's place.

''They built a whole harbor in Stormwind while those workers have been slacking off!''
NO! They are building a second (2nd) Gatehouse (road, path, entrance) to the already existing harbor. There has always been a harbor in lore. The in-game screenshots of the NPCs of patch 2.4.3 confirm it too.
Suzaku Aug 13th 2008 5:27PM
That's correct. The harbor has always been there as far as lore is concerned, you just can't reach it in-game. They're constructing a new entrance to the port by destroying one of the walls.
Similarily, there was always a port built into Tyr's Hand in the lore, but they're only just now adding it and the Scarlet Enclave to the game with Acherus: The Ebon Hold.

The following post at Elitist Jerks really puts all the questions about socket interaction with enchants and tradeskills to bed by showing the blacksmithing req and the enchant (+15 str) alongside the socket. And with a screenshot to boot.

Thats actually a screenshot of my gloves taken from my post here on WoWinsider a few days ago. See post 75, http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/08/11/ask-a-beta-tester-gold-atiesh-and-mr-tirion-fordring/4#comments

Has appeared any upgrade to the Everlasting sprore frond? http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28111 Its probably the item I use most and the only item besides my hearthstone that is always on the inventory of all my outland alts.
Dightkuz Aug 13th 2008 3:10PM
Indeed, It's the item I will be looking for in Northrend
Boowat Aug 13th 2008 11:46AM
my question/s is quite long winded so bear (bare?) with me.
how does lake wintergrasp pvp actually work in regards to siege weapons etc. do i just go round running people over or driving into the side of buildings?
also, is it a capture the flag/base zone?
finally, how does the token system for it work. do you get one per kill or per objective or something like that, and how much of these tokens will be needed for gear.
ok thankies
Erdinger Aug 15th 2008 11:01AM
There are actually now belt enchants for engineers, so you can count that socket in the same category as gloves and bracers.
Chris Aug 13th 2008 11:56AM
In BC, Engineers have a Mote Extractor that changes Gas Clouds into Motes. Is there something similar to this in WOTLK?
Ithilian Aug 14th 2008 4:49PM
I came across some cloud like things above a frozen lake, used my mote extractor on them and got some crystallized water. so the extractor still works.
dan Aug 13th 2008 11:59AM
Elizabeth, I don't mean to sound rude but given many of your answers tend to be "Either way, we haven't run into anayone who knows it to confirm one way or the other." I personally don't find it surprising you're getting repeat questions. What I do find surprising is your constant selection of questions you can't answer.
dpoyesac Aug 13th 2008 1:31PM
People have lots of questions. These guys are doing their best to answer the questions that are asked.
"We don't know yet" is an answer, even though it isn't the answer you want.
