Ask a Beta Tester: Wintergrasp and caster stats

Boowat asked....
How does Lake Wintergrasp PvP actually work in regards to siege weapons etc. do i just go round running people over or driving into the side of buildings?
Alex: Very little of Lake Wintergrasp is actually implemented. Right now it is more or less a sandbox with tonka trucks in it, except you can climb in the trucks and they can shoot missiles and throw rocks. Each of the vehicles has a set of abilities that come up like if you mind controlled something. Your action bar changes to their action bar. They have anywhere from 1 to 4 abilities. Some of them can cause Siege Damage to structures, some can't. The tanks are heavy siege damage, the planes have some light siege damage, and the shredders are mostly for wtfpwning players.
For more of your questions -- and our answers! -- read on! But if you're the sort who wants to avoid spoilers, turn back now. We're aiming to avoid major story spoilers, but this feature is all about beta content and we can't talk about the beta without giving a few things away. For those of you with additional questions on the blacksmithing sockets, we have some additional answers courtesy of commenters ninjasuperspy and Eldacar.

Whiplashmtb asked....
I asked Daniel, one of our resident Hunter experts, about this one. He informed me that caster stats should be gone from pets. Mania informs us that there are still pets with caster stats in the beta right now, Blizzard has indicated that these will be fixed (presumably removed) at some point in the future.
wrez asked....
Have they made any changes the way fishing is leveled? Every other profession, be it primary or secondary, requires you to level it by performing more "difficult" tasks as you progress; be it the skinning of higher level mobs, cooking more fulfilling dishes, etc. It doesn't make any sense to become a Bassmaster by repeatedly plucking minnows out of the wading pool.
I'm afraid I don't have a complete answer for you. Up until last night's beta patch, you couldn't fish anywhere in Northrend or catch any new fish. However, there does not seem to be a Grand Master level trainer or book in the game at this point to raise people's skill level in the game yet. (A maxxed out fisherman... fisherperson?... has to toss on all of their +fishing gear and use some good bait to fish in the ponds in Dalaran.) This doesn't answer your question, but it is all we know about fishing from the beta realms. No changes have been announced or made, but right now fishing is only half-implemented, at best.
Updated: to make this answer make some sort of sense.
Ponnicus asked....
One question I have been wondering is in regards to bonus healing -> spell power. Can we get some real world numbers of what your bonus healing was compared to what your spell power is now?
I have a couple of healing characters on the live and beta realms. On the live realms, my Priest has 2012 healing. On the beta realms, 1078 healing. On the live realms, my Paladin has 1883 healing. On the beta realms, 1096 healing. (I'm as puzzled as you over how my Paladin has managed to overtake my Priest in the healing department. With the new spell power stat, some of my gear has been shuffled, but not that much.)
Spell damage converts to spell power on about a one to one ratio, but spell healing converts to spell power on closer to a 2 to 1 ratio -- but don't get too worked up over the lower numbers
Just looking at the itemization it seems like it will be roughly half. If that's the case, my bonus damage is roughly 1/3 of that today (around 700). Could this mean my lowly priest might be doing more damage when soloing?
For healers collecting a set of healing gear (for instances) and damage gear (for soloing), this will almost certainly result in an improvement of your damage -- without the need to carry around an extra set of gear.
We had a couple of questions about AoE grinding spots from muxecoid and Evan, which basically amounted to....
Are there any good spots for AoE leveling between 70 and 77?
Zach recommends Zul'drak as an awesome place to farm, AoE-style. "The Undead are all so clumped together, especially east of Ebon Watch." Alex suggests that in the Howling Fjord at Valgarde and the Horde outpost above Vengeance Landing, they're under siege from an endlessly respawning stream of Valkyr. They award XP and they're pretty weak. As for level 80 money-grinding stuff, that'll probaby be something in Icecrown or Storm Peaks- level 78-80 mobs, but those zones aren't in the game yet.andyjay220 asked....
Is there any indication that Protection Paladins will be more effective offtanks?
Paladins are in a tough spot for off-tanking because so much of their damage (and thus threat) is reflective (i.e. they generate threat by having things smack them over the head). Not to mention the mana issues a Paladin runs into when they aren't main tanking (they get mana back from being healed via Spiritual Attunement, but limited healing happens when ou're off-tanking, which means limited mana which means limited threat). Alex and Zach both suggest that Shield of Righteousness will help in the threat department (depending on itemization and the ability to stack shield block to make Shield of Righteousness hit harder), but Alex says, "I don't think it will be enough." There's nothing that currently addresses a Protection Paladin's mana problems when they aren't main tanking -- other than the ability to swig mana potions constantly. (And depending on what happens to Potion Sickness, that may not be an option.
However, with Blizzard's recent announcement that all tanking classes should be viable in all tanking situations, perhaps Shield of Righteousness is the beginning of more changes that will help Paladins function better as off-tanks.

ok, so can anyone confirm that they were sending out more beta invites today (8/14) i just got one in my mailbox and wanted to make sure its not scam
0756 Aug 14th 2008 12:08PM
Indeed, I received one as well. I am cautiously optimistic, as I have had my account hacked in the past. Any news on these new invites?
Hobbes Aug 14th 2008 12:46PM
Geniune beta invitations will include the following line:
"Below is a beta code that will allow you to upgrade a World of Warcraft account to be eligible for the Wrath of the Lich King beta test. Each beta code can be used only once to upgrade an active retail World of Warcraft account.
******-****-..."
Then you go to: http://beta.worldofwarcraft.com/ and type in that code.
To be 100% safe, never click on any links in email. Type in the http address, and make sure you spell it right!

Re: spellpower in healing, your Paladin might be specced to increase their healing by a % of their intellect, explaining the increase.
Talamarr Aug 14th 2008 11:17AM
On Siege vehicles: Do you forsee issues where players will be camping spawn points of vehicles, not even attempting to play the match (much like what happens in FPS like BF2)
Also, can you use joysticks to fly the planes?
obarthelemy Aug 14th 2008 11:28AM
Do we already know if blizzard will, like they did for BC, implement the new talents, specs... a bit before releasing the new content ?
Robert Aug 14th 2008 2:06PM
No
patch 3.0 Aug 14th 2008 7:39PM
Patch 3.0 will be released many days before Wrath comes out.
There isn't an official date yet but patch 2.0 was released about a month before BC.
So the new talent trees will be available but of course we will have to wait for Wrath to be able to level up and use the extra 10 talent points.

I'm starting to get a little bit tired of hearing question after question about spellpower. It doesn't seem that complicated, your healing will be the same if not higher regardless of what the spell damage is on your gear. Maybe you guys can just start linking to the answers in previous installments?
That aside...thanks for the answers!
Drakkenfyre Aug 14th 2008 12:47PM
So am I. I understand people are curious about it. But it's getting old seeing the same questions over and over. It should be made a sticky of some sort, with everything that's currently known about the change, and people asking directed to that.
As for my own questions, I see in the UI we get two new buttons. I would like to know what they are for. And is there an option to disable the calender display, and use the old Sun/Moon indicator instead? I don't need the calender, and I like the Sun/Moon indicator better, lol.
RogueJedi86 Aug 15th 2008 2:24AM
@Drakkenfyre
Those 2 buttons are(left to right) Achievements, and the Tokens page. The Tokens button is an Alliance icon if you're Alliance, and Horde icon if you're Horde.

Anyone know if Sylvanas' model has been changed?
Angus Aug 14th 2008 12:03PM
Here's something I want to know!
She's a freaking HIGH ELF!!!
Stupid bouncy placeholder.
You'd think they would have fixed it with them adding a quest that makes her sing...
And is she actually going to Northrend? Because if not, this xpac is utter garbage for lore.
When people get to fight Arthas, she should be there working to kill him. Illidan had lore characters after his butt. If anyone deserves to be in an Arthas fight it's the Ranger Lord he murdered that broke free of his will and then freed an entire faction's worth of people.
Hurode Aug 14th 2008 3:52PM
Angus, I seem to remember reading here that multiple NPCs will be assisting you in the Arthas fight. It wouldn't be unreasonable to guess that Sylvanas might come and bring a few friends to help out.
Aler Aug 14th 2008 11:32AM
Any news on tailoring specialization?
Both Shadoweave and Spellcloth can only be made at particular locations in Outlands - any word on what's happening to these in Northrend? Maybe new types of cloth?
I assume the other specializations (leatherworking, blacksmithing, alchemy) get new goodies in WotLK. How about tailoring?
Aler Aug 14th 2008 11:34AM
Maybe this is more complicated than I thought. With the intro of unified spellpower, does armor with specialized damage type still exist?
Drakkenfyre Aug 14th 2008 12:51PM
I would assume you won't be able to make those cloths in Northrend, and will still have to go to Outland to make it. They are adding new cloths to the game, so there will be new craftable items.
Eisengel Aug 14th 2008 2:29PM
@ Aler
Yes. For instance the Frozen Shadoweave robe will add +72 to Shadow spellpower. If not we'd have healers stacking all the damage caster gear.
Smurrf_ Aug 14th 2008 11:41AM
The problem for pallies as OT is mana deprivation. not being hit = not being able to gain mana back from Spiritual Attunement.
Alliance having a carbon copy of Seal of Blood now changes that. It's a steady stream of incoming damage, that will allow for some mana flow back in. It's not perfect, but it does allow for some extended longetivity. Also, having a ret pally for Judgement of Wisdom (a marked difference at this point in time than prot or holy JoW) will help tremendously; the numbers from ret's JoW are enormous atm on Beta.
andyjay220 Aug 14th 2008 11:53AM
It's true that mana is an issue, although I've been able to counter that by chaining pots and using JoW. However, the amount of threat generation gained from reactive damage actually gets too low for a MAIN tanking paladin in with t5 geared dps or beyond, so an OT doesn't really have a chance to generate reasonable threat. Sometimes it's better with undead targets, but then mana becomes even more of an issue.
The health you lose from SoB is almost irrelevant in terms of requiring healing or getting mana back from Spiritual Attunement.
