The Wrath of Engineering

The WotLK Information Wiki has mined some interesting schematics that just might be available to tinkerers and bombardiers everywhere. The speculative schematics seem to confirm what Drysc elucidated about their direction for Engineering, which is to convert most of the fun stuff like the ever-popular Rocket Boots series into item attachments instead of items that may or not be better (usually not) than the Engineer's actual item for that slot. In the case of Rocket Boots, for example, there's Nitro Boosts, which can be applied over one's boots like an enchant. It still requires "a skilled Engineer" to use, of course. Let's have a look at some other cool stuff after the break.
MOLL-E
Creates a portable mailbox for 5 min.
Mike Schramm featured this little wonder way back when it made its appearance in an old Beta of The Burning Crusade. Back then, it was called the Remote Mail Terminal, before the blockbuster Pixar movie inspired a rename. This schematic, like most of the Engineering spells found in the game files, still has unknown reagents so the chances of this making it to live are merely wishful thinking. Blizzard pulled this from the Burning Crudade Beta before it ever made it live. Will it make it through the second round? Engineers everywhere can only dare to dream.
Steam Powered Auctioneer
Creates a steam-powered auctioneer that takes bids for 10 min. This device creates intense heat and can only be used in the cold climate of Northrend.
Now this is an interesting item that's more than likely to never make it to live servers. On the other hand, from the description, the item only takes bids and doesn't allow players to put up auctions. It only works in Northreand and also needs a mailbox to retrieve won items, so it works well with MOLL-E. Still, this item is so good -- too good -- that Engineers shouldn't hold their breaths.
Hyperspeed Accelerators
Permanently attaches hyperspeed accelerators to a pair of gloves, allowing a skilled engineer to increase their haste rating by 340 for 8 sec. The gloves can only be activated every few minutes.
This is simply awesome. More items like this would make Engineering not just fun but a serious consideration for a raiding profession. It might need a bit of tuning in terms of haste granted, duration, and cooldown, but this actually has a plausible chance of making it to live realms.
There are a bunch of other cool stuff on the WotLK wiki site, such as the Belt-Clipped Spynoculars and Personal Electromagnetic Pulse Generator, two of the new belt enchants. The latter seems like the perfect tool for busting tanks in the new siege vehicle-populated Battlegrounds of Wrath. Speaking of tank-busting, there's also the Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket for those with an Iron Man fetish. If any of these schematics make it to Beta, I'll be sure to have my Engineer craft the cool stuff. Maybe I can't afford an RL MV Agusta, but a hog will suit my Shaman quite nicely. More Engineering goodness over at the WotLK Information Wiki.

I am torn... I recently got my first ever 70 (havent been playing too long) and I dont know wether to start training Engineering or wait for Inscription...

While these seem to be decent ideas, as they stand, they're still missing the mark. The intent is to offer this modifications to free up a bag slot in that the engineer will no longer need to carry a parachute cloak, or rocket boots. But any serious raider or pvp'er isn't going to apply the rocket boot mod over agility or stamina. Hence, said engineer will still be carrying a green or blue item while their epic has a real enchant.
So basically, it's a bastardized form of enchanting. Much like the ability of a BS to add a socket, these should NOT overwrite a standard enchantment.
Also, haste to gloves *could* be great if the cooldown is 2-3 minutes. Any more, and passive enchants will still be better.
Clasifyd Aug 14th 2008 9:17AM
I completely agree with you. All of the engineering 'enchants' have some sort of a cooldown, and most have a chance for a negative side effect, so what's the point in having it overwrite enchants? If they were to not overwrite, you'd still be taking a risk by attaching it to your armor, and it would allow for a more varied and fun style of gameplay.
Secondly, it would be great if we could sell these 'enchants' on the AH, as well. Engineering has such a history of being nothing but a money-devouring black hole, why not give us a break and let us turn some profit? Before I had my engineer, I can't remember one time I went to the AH to specifically search for anything engineering related. Give us something to do with it after we max level it!

I would. cloak enchants at this point are rather lame, I'd replace it with a parachute. Same for boots, give me nitro instead of boars speed.
raiding BT/MH these days

@Clasifyd: Zapthrottle Mote Extractor.

Engineering has offered me very little edge in comparison to other professions, and it looks like it will continue the trend. The only things I have used competitively are the epic goggles and Frost Grenades (Vashj).
Anything that is ever useful for arenas is eventually considered "unbalanced," like the rocket boots, gnomish chicken trinket, etc. Not that I disagree, but it is kind of unfair when you consider that things like ring enchants, jewelcrafting gems, etc. still give their benefit in arena PvP.
Right now, I use my rocket boots for running back from wipes. I'm not going to overwrite any stat for that. The only enchant that MIGHT be competitive (cool down depending) is haste to gloves; I'd like to see more like it-especially if it ends up being competitive with passive enchants.
It would be NICE if Engineers had items and enchants that added utility for raiding and arenas, which is the real focus of end game.
In the past, engineering has been all about gimmicks in battlegrounds/world PvP (bombs, chickens, etc). Rocket launchers are cool, but it's not exactly the same as hemorrhaging extra gem slots (blacksmithing).
At the very least, this change is good, because I can put these enchants on my SECOND best item and not some crappy blue.

My Hunter is an engineer specifically because I wanted the Flying Machine. So more engineering goodies are always better.
Harmun Aug 14th 2008 1:41PM
Everyone laughed at me when I said that I was taking engineering with my paladin. Two bug buckets of fail, they said. Paladins are third class healers, second class tanks, and no class DPS, they said. Paladins can't PVP either, they said. Paladins can't level fast, and can't range pull without engineering or the last talent in the tanking tree.
I stuck by it, leveled the hard way, and figured eventually I would be vindicated.
Thanks you WotLK! Paladins and Engineering now rock!

@ MechChef
What the hell are you talking about many players have multiple arrays of gear for different situations playstyle's PvP PvE RP etc.. being able to enchant most of these awesome new engineering awesome-sauce abilities onto lets say PvP Arena Gear will be a Giant boost rather then wearing the current blue booties you could chuck these on your season 9 arse kicking converse-style sneakers and zoom around the arena at break neck speeds keeping the stats of the Epic boots - Resilience Stam and whatever else you need...
This is a very well thought out Idea from Blizzard allowing engineers to apply things like these to items.
I only hope and pray that you can see the items; e.g. see that somone has an enchanted cloak from a glance or that somones gloves have Pyro Rockets attatched to them or even go so far as too see Rings and necklaces and Gems on the characters gear not great big stonking things but suttle enough to be noticed by serious players or RP'ers and even if it could be another notch on the Graphic's engine which you turn on to allow you too see all they fucking Awesome-sauce things...
Thats my dream anyway.x

engineering has never been a serious choice for raiders, but if these could be applied along side enchants we would see a bigger influx of engineers then when we got our epic helms. In fact, i would give up my epic equipment from engineering if they could.
Frank Smith Aug 14th 2008 10:55AM
if you like repairing during raids it sure is.
Johnsom Aug 14th 2008 6:15PM
I dont think the repair bot justifies an entire profession slot.
Wimpkin Aug 14th 2008 9:20AM
I always would like to add the fact they should allow for a trinket chain, like the current key chain and the way they have hidden away with mounts and vanity pets i think they should do the same with trinkets so you can keep all of them with you at once allowing you to fully utalise your obsesive compulsive desire to collect'em'all. I know I have 2 Bank slots devoted to them.x

Alas, my engineers are lvl's 19 and 29 respectivly. On my lvl 70's I am maxed on professions and can't see leveling engineering on one of them. Can't drop Enchanting, it's too useful and too expensive to re-level. Tailoring I will drop when Inscription is available so my Druid is Enchanting/Inscription. My warrior is Mining/Jewelcrafting. I can't drop JC cuz... well, its too good for makin $$$. Can't drop mining because I need it for JC. Next up the level-ladder is my rogue, which is Skin/Leather, then my Mage which is Alch/Herb... which I'll need when I have to level a scribe. *sigh*
Why is the funnest profession so bloody useless most of the time? Maybe it is time to level my hunter.
DAMN YOU BLIZZARD!!!! WHY DO YOU GIVE ME SO MUCH FUN STUFF TO DO THAT I CAN'T GET IT ALL DONE??? DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!
Fulcran Aug 14th 2008 9:47AM
....I just want to see confirmation of a Mote Extractor equivalent.
I always joke that I have double-gathering porfessions - Mining and Engineering. I have probably made more money from the Mote Extractor than the Mining....
Ichthus Aug 14th 2008 10:24AM
Amen. Walking around Nagrand doing one quest, I got a primal air because of two clouds at 5x mote of air each.
ofFive Aug 15th 2008 11:11AM
Have not seen a single cloud out in Northrend... I am looking for anything that might lead to an extractor of some sort. The new motes are crystalized (life, earth, shadow, etc.). So maybe some kind of defrosting collector tool?
On a good note I did see that engineers can harvest robots in the Borean Tundra.
Darxide Aug 14th 2008 9:58AM
from what i can see from alot of the proffessions, stuff like this will be a mod rather than an enchant. so stuff like the gem buckle wont over write the +12 agi or what ever on it. however it will over write the Belt-Clipped Spynoculars.
it would be nice for blizz to allow a differant kind of enchant, AKA a mod, on a differant level so that proffessions like engineering arent just for the person who made the manic gadget.
Algorithm Aug 14th 2008 12:06PM
Yeah, that would be awesome if you could have an enchant on your boots AND an engineering benefit, but it's one or the other according to this article.
