Some nice ideas in this post, and I have to say the 'familiar' thing sounds interesting. A (raid-wide?) buff would be great, although I wouldn't go for critters. My thought was that your 'familiar' would change according to what school of magic you're using.
Maybe I should explain myself a bit better: so you summon this familiar and it appears just as... a thing. Then when you start casting, it changes appearance; it becomes (for example) a little phoenix for fire, or a crab for frost, or... whatever lives in arcane energies (a mini-ethereal?). And the buff would change with its appearance, for example +damage for arcane, crit rating for fire and haste for frost.
Not only would this add to the fun factor of mages, but it would also make mages more appealing to raids: every raid would want at least one mage of each school, right?
