I think the familiar idea might be more feasable if it had a reagent. Fomething like a piece of bat fur or a broken spider leg. Vendor trash, essentially. After all, in Dungeons and Dragons, Wizards were collectors of all kinds of unusual tidbits. This would solve the summoning in-zone problem. Plus, I'd love to carry a bunch of frog's legs around in a bag, knowing I can turn them into a temporary familiar/buff. Just a thought.
