Around Azeroth: Master of his domain
We've gotten a flood of great submissions lately, both from live realms and WotLK beta (and a huge backlog of pictures we're planning to put up -- be patient!) But the one thing I've been looking for is a really good shot of the Lich King himself. We received two of those shots in the last two days, and I was torn on which to put up. So I put it to a vote.
By a majority of 3-0, the members of the WoW Insider blogging staff that were awake and responding to questions at 3:30 AM picked this picture, featuring the Lich King and an angel of death, over its rival (available for viewing here.). Reasoning? It "looks cooler," "doesn't have a gnome" and is more of "an 'omg i'm standing in front of the freaking LICH KING' moment." Congrats to victor Anderek of Lightbringer, and unfortunate gnome runner-up Littlest from Lich King beta server. Which picture do you prefer? Leave a comment and let us know!
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more sunsets.

Anderek's would be better if the Lich King wasn't posed looking like he should have a chat bubble saying "Oooow, my back!"

you have no idea how pumped i am that my picture got up here haha, i was actually trying to get a good view of him pointing out his arm but i timed it wrong, i think it still came out pretty menacing - Anderek

Damn edit button =( haha, i also meant to add that this and more of my screenshots from the beta are on my guild website http://fog.wowstead.com/gallery/4 if anyone is interested in checking them out.
Rihlsul Aug 16th 2008 12:19PM
Haha. Cool, thanks a bunch for sharing!

Can someone explain to me why bosses always have to be as high as a skyscraper, even when they are just humans or human origin (Kael, Illidan, Arthas, ...)?
It looks weird, is weird and when fighting them it's just annoying because all you see are the toes.
Marc Aug 16th 2008 11:26AM
Probably so that everyone can see the boss. If bosses were normal height ranged DPS wouldn't be able to see them.

The Lich King isn't huge normally, but he will be for raid encounters. It's purely a gameplay mechanic, so everyone in the raid can see them and target them.

I think not having a gnome is a good enough reason for that one to win. XD
I'm so glad the Lich King finally got his own stance/animations. Someone managed to remove the pole from his butt!
Marc Aug 16th 2008 11:31AM
Agreed.

Am I the only one thinking the armor makes him look fat ?

I wish you guys would put things like this behind cuts so that people who don't want information spoiled don't have to see it.
Alchemistmerlin Aug 16th 2008 11:15AM
What information spoiled?
"OMG THE LICH KING IS GOING TO BE IN WRATH OF THE LICH KING?! GOD DAMNED SPOILERS!"
Naryven Aug 16th 2008 7:09PM
I lol'd
Dan Aug 16th 2008 10:51AM
Shouldn't you put this after the break with a spoiler? I know I was trying to avoid screenshots of the Lich King from Wrath, seems like that's gone out the window.
And, before anyone says that WoW Insider is one big spoiler these days, remember that there is still a live game which this site is reporting on, and that there are many parts of WotLK which I still wish to know about.
Thorn Aug 16th 2008 11:59AM
"remember that there is still a live game which this site is reporting on"
Yes, but it's so infrequent when they do a non-Wrath story that directly relates to WoW that it's laughable. It's not us that needs to remember there's still a live game, it's WoW Insider.
Thorn Aug 16th 2008 12:05PM
Forgot to add the real point, tho: a picture of the Lich King isn't a spoiler. That's like saying, "I saw a picture of Batman in The Dark Knight, now it's ruined."
dotorion Aug 16th 2008 12:22PM
To be honest though, it's not like you didn't know what he looked like ?
Okay so you didn't know the exact in-game model yet .. but it's damn close to, say, the WC3 wallpaper from the Frozen Throne ending scene where he sits on his throne.
Dan Aug 16th 2008 1:06PM
It may seem unreasonable, seeing as yes, I do know what the Lich King looks like, but to me it is a spoiler. It's like my attitude with Dalaran, I don't want to see it before live (or in the unlikely event I personally get into the Beta), so that I can walk in and think wow, the same feeling I got when first walking into Orgrimmar and Shattrath.
It's the same thing, I want my first encounter with the Lich King to be a wow moment, rather than having seen it already on a website.
Jay Aug 16th 2008 11:12AM
Why does he has his own name showing and NPC names =/
Can he not tell its the Lich King without a big name above his head?
pudds Aug 16th 2008 11:18AM
You guys picked the right one.
