The Light and How to Swing It: The shocking truth in Beta

Of course, what looks good on paper doesn't necessarily translate into actual gameplay. With the reshuffle of talents and the consolidation of spell and melee crit, what used to be a fringe off-spec with a loyal following might actually turn into the spec of choice... for healing Paladins. Before anything, though, let's make one thing clear -- this is Beta, so everything we'll be taking a look at today might (and is likely to) change by the time Wrath of the Lich King is live.
Paladins fighting at range
One of the two biggest changes that shake up the Shockadin spec is Enlightened Judgements, which allows ranged Judgements. This is huge. Gahzrilla-huge. King Mukla-huge. This ninth tier Holy talent finally gives Paladins a ranged attack, extending the reach of Judgements to 30 yards. Combined with the tenth tier Judgements of the Pure, it also allows healing Paladins to insert Judgements into their spell cycle for a permanent haste buff. This means healers can toss in token damage even while healing at the back, making for more involved gameplay.
Faster shocks
The other big change that has given all die-hard Shockadins a shot in the vein is the reduced cooldown of Holy Shock, cut to a respectable 6 seconds down from a glacial 15. The shortened cooldown makes it a truly viable healing and offensive spell. Combined with the eighth tier Holy talent Infusion of Light, a critical Holy Shock can translate to a near-instant balance shift in offensive encounters. Imagine critting with a Holy Shock for 3.5k and instantly healing yourself for 6k. This is the kind of spell synergy that makes Shockadins need a change of underwear. On the other hand, the downranking nerf no longer makes inserting Rank 1 Holy Shocks in order to proc the instant Holy Light buff a viable option.
Holy Retribution
Whereas most Holy, or healing Paladins took points into Protection in the current game, the move of Improved Concentration Aura into the Holy tree makes it a less attractive support tree. Furthermore, because Conviction applies to all spells and attacks, it's virtually required for all Holy Paladins to spec for this third tier talent in order to keep Illumination going. This works well for Shockadins because all the talents leading to Conviction contribute towards Shock DPS -- Benediction, Improved Judgements, and the newly reworked and renamed Heart of the Crusader, which further adds to crit and Illumnination.
Great on paper...
Now, all this looks great on paper but in actuality faces a few hitches. First and foremost, Shockadins still suffer from a lack of a true snare. Ranged judgements amount to little more than another way to chase down runners or -- thankfully -- pull from afar. But enemies able to kite the Paladin will have a considerably easy time reducing a Shockadin's output. Ranged judgements and Holy Shock don't have the same range, either, with judgements extending to 30 yards while Holy Shocks are at 20. Of course, melee attacks are at 5 yards, limiting the Shockadin's effective attack range at 5 yards with ranged attacks as mere options. Conceptually, this should be fine as Paladins are truly a melee-based class. The ranged attacks simply expand the Shockadin's arsenal. In fact, with Hammer of Wrath usable on targets below 35%, this gives a Shockadin considerable flexibility on offense.
The problem with a Shockadin in Beta is that to fully appreciate the changes, one has to reach Level 71 and 75 for Divine Plea and Shield of Righteousness, respectively. Divine Plea allows a Shockadin to keep on going, as Illumination will only extend mana longevity. Paladins in dire straits can channel this spell within Divine Shield, too, making it a quick and sure way to regenerate mana even during combat. Because a Shockadin will be using a spell power one-hander and shield, Shield of Righteousness adds to the offensive spell cycle, increasing DPS significantly.
One drawback is that Shield of Righteousness doesn't proc seals. For some reason, it isn't considered a melee attack the way unarmed punches are. Currently, the 41-point talent Divine Storm procs seals on Beta even though it doesn't even require a target to cast. This might be changed at some point in the future, but I'd also like a change to Shield of Righteousness to allow it to proc seals. That simple change alone will give it a massive DPS and utility boost to Paladins of all specs, particularly the Shockadin.
Shocking DPS
How does this translate to Shockadin DPS? Even with a lower cooldown to Holy Shock and the addition of Shield of RIghteousness, Shockadin DPS will still not match Retribution's, which was buffed significantly in Beta to the point where players felt the pain. Particularly with a talent that reduces Avenging Wrath's cooldown, Retribution DPS jumps far ahead. This is just proper, though, because the truth is, there is no longer a pure Holy healing build. All Holy Paladins will have the power of a 6-second Holy Shock and the option -- actually almost the requirement -- to take critical points (pun intended) in the Retribution tree.
This means that all Paladin healers will be capable of respectable DPS. In Beta, Paladin Ornamented healing sets have been converted to Spell Power from Healing, making them nearly identical to the Spell Damage-oriented Lamellar sets. Gear and spec-wise, Shockadins and Holy healbots are virtually one and the same... which is a phenomenal change because it gives healers the satisfaction of being able to dish out a bit of damage, too -- sometimes, even a lot of damage -- without having to have a different set of gear.
There must be a few sacrifices made, however, as a "Shockadin" will necessarily forego Beacon of Light in order to get Sanctified Retribution for a 50/0/21 build. Sometimes, even less points in Holy in order to get Sheath of Light. Furthermore, Level 80 is required to take advantage of the best in both Holy and Retribution trees but the level cap in Beta is currently at Level 77. Until Paladins get another pass and all 80 level (and 71 talent points become available), it will be impossible to tell if this sacrifice will be worth it as the developers promised to tweak the already amazing Beacon of Light. And because we have yet to determine itemization and balance at Level 80, everything we're looking at is speculative. That said, if most of these changes make it intact onto the live realms, it seems that the future is looking shockingly bright for Paladins.

"it will be impossible to tell if this sacrifice will be worth it as the developers promised to tweak the already amazing Beacon of Light"
Amazing? I don t think so. A spell that does not work with our crits, costs a huge amount of mana and heals for a tiny bit is not amazing.
Asteh Aug 16th 2008 3:25PM
Idd, Beacon of Light looks quite bad, especially with that mana cost, but the other changes look great, holy paladins / shockadins look more interesting than my restoshammy :(
JuicedCardinal Aug 16th 2008 4:37PM
Keep in mind that "base mana" is your mana without any of the item bonuses, so it's not quite as bad as you think. And, like someone else noted, I believe, in a raid situation where you have quite a bit of melee DPS on a boss, it's more mana efficient than Flash of Light.
Barth Aug 18th 2008 4:46PM
it's actually pretty amazing, an AOE HoT. It hits all targets in 10 yards of the person you cast it on. It will be great for raiding. I'm just glad that there is one healing spec in this game that is actually viable as a solo PVP/farming class at the same time. Farming on my resto shammy or holy priest makes me want to smack myself in the face.

Good post. I am a big fan of your articles since you pretty much mirror my playstyle and interests in WoW very closely.
Good to see that Holy paladins will get some more dps. I play my ret paladin in the beta so haven't tried Shockadin at all. Don't even have the gear for it except for the blue pvp gear you get from rep.
Gonna see a whole lot more ret paladins in WoTLK :) Gonna feel like when I specced subtlety on my rogue way back when and people thought it was a sucky spec for pvp. Now look how many run with it...
Driphter Aug 19th 2008 7:19PM
More people run sub now because of the buffs to hemo and shadowstep as well as the nerfs to AR/Prep; not because it was good all along.

I played a Shockadin and have work out my own spec. All I really to say is that "Judgment of the Pure" is a waste of time. This spell does really mean much to a Shockadin consider most of our damage comes from Holy Shock, SoR, and Consecration. If you pass on that talent I found you can get far enough into the Holy tree for "Vengeance" which would really help out a Shockadin considering we crit all the time.
I think that in Wrath if we still see Shockadin's there will be tow types: The Healing ones and the more DPS oriented ones.
Full Metal Aug 16th 2008 3:27PM
I still play a Shockadin*
It doesn't Mean a lot to Shockadins*
Two types*
I'll remember to spell check next time. :)
Kurt Roithinger Aug 16th 2008 3:37PM
yeah, if you're looking at it as a pure shockadin dps optimization, getting veng would be FAR superior to judgments of the pure.
where JotP does have virtue is in pure healing scenarios (haste is the alpha and omega, etc.)
DM7000 Aug 16th 2008 3:27PM
These seem like pretty good improvements although I don't play a Holy Paladin so I don't have much to say.
Also just wondering has there been an article like this for Prot Paladins? I haven't been following this as much as I should.
Argent Aug 16th 2008 3:31PM
sheath really isn't all that impressive in a shockadin build, imo. using might over wisdom is kinda gimp in terms of your mana optimization. the real boost in damage you'll get comes from faster judgements, 5% crit and crusade.
still, as long as divine guardian is where it is in the prot tree, the holy/prot build will remain the best raid/support build.

Shockadins - A Paladin who wishes they could spec Retribution but is too much of a pussy, and is afraid that by actually being Retribution they might actually lose his online friends and guilds trust and acceptance.
The problem with the Shockadin spec is that Retribution can now seriously heal and still dps.

Given that Pre-WOTLK patch 3.0 doesn't change much too drastically, the average Retribution Paladin will have 2000 AP and 600 spell power. The average level 70 epic healing mace and shield will add about 500 spell power but lower the Paladins spell power from Sheath of Light by 50-100, due to the missing AP from the melee weapon.
That means the average Retribution Paladin with the above macro could have 1000 spell power which is the same as today's 2000 + healing.

With the above spec a Retribution could heal as well as a Holy Paladin with the bellow spec.
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/basics/talents/wrath/paladin/talents.html?tal=55350050000130053102501000000000000000000000000000000052302512003013000000000000
The worst part is that no Paladin is going to spec for Kings besides Protection and even they might not even wanna waste the points.
Thanks to Judgment of the Wise a Retribution Paladin will never run out of mana so long as there's someone to use a Judgment on. It's so good that a lot of Holy Paladin might even sacrifice more Holy talents just to get this talent in Retribution.
Either Beacon of Light needs a huge buff or Sheath of Light and Judgment of Wise need to be moved deeper down Retribution.
Palladiamors Aug 16th 2008 4:46PM
How about.... no? First off, a shockadin is a paladin whose focus is spell damage in the form of shocks and judgements, as opposed to a retributions mixture of holy and white damage. Not because they, are you put it, are a pussy. Its simply a different form of play style. Secondly, you shouldn't EVER be healing as a retribution spec, and your obvious inabilty TO spec in either retribution for healing OR for a straight out healing spec shows your total ineptitude with class mechanics. In theory, your second spec would allow for MINOR healing, in the correct gear, but that would totally defeat the reason for the rest of your retribution spec. You also don't seem to understand the essence of healing, which is standing back away from the action and tossing off heals. Your spec would require you to be up front within ten yards for any sort of mana efficiency, which might work for BGs, but once again you've gimped your retribution gear in favor of healing gear, makes no sense. You've never even played a holy paladin, have you? One of the holy paladins main draws is sheer mana efficiency, and your 'holy healing' build lacked most of that. Finally its called a respec. Collect two sets of gear, switch as needed, respec as needed. No needed for wonky and un-needed builds like your wanna be second hybrid.
Last thing, beacon of light isn't that bad. It isn't mean to be a main heal, its meant to be a suppliment that you toss up every time it goes down. Not only that, but it is a AoE HoT, so anything in the radius is getting healed. Coming from both a paladin and a druid, 2000 over 15 at max rank is not bad at all, but I rather wish they'd kick it up to 3000. That, however, is personal preference, and will require a bit more testing.
Dukenukemx Aug 16th 2008 5:12PM
To - Palladiamor
What you say maybe true now, but in WOTLK a Ret Paladins will get spell power from AP. Also, if you didn't know spell power has double the effect of healing due to spells having their coefficients increased.
Mana efficiency won't be a problem because again from Judgment of the Wise.
A Retribution Paladin will be in range of receiving damage from a boss but then again a Ret Paladins main roll is to dps.
By just throwing 8 talent points into Holy a Retribution Paladins heals will hit nearly as hard as a deep Holy Paladin. It's not like the Ret Paladin has to swap out of his melee gear either. Weapon swapping will achieve the same amount of bonus healing, and weapon swapping can be done during combat.
The real benefit of a Holy Paladin is their ability to cast quicker heals, due to their new talents deep in Holy and their healing gear will likely have haste on it. Which they won't have because they put too many talent points in Retribution.
Shockadin was always a dead spec, but there's too many stupid people out there insisting that the spec works.
Mirra Aug 17th 2008 7:37AM
First, I want to say that Shockadin is not a dead spec. Just because it isn't official spec it should be dead? Now, I am Shockadin with 917 spelldamage and I can easily defeat most of warriors and rogues in fair match (= no stunlock from stealth). In Wrath this means that even healing paladins will become deadly and still be great healers.
But with the retribution part, you are right. The Holy/Retri hybrid will have more damage output, then typical holy Shockadin, and still nearly the same survivability.
One of the changes of paladin's spells in Wrath is, that Seals, Judgements and even Consecration benefit from spellpower, but also from attack power. E.g. the formula for SoR is here: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=21084 .
What i want to this is to introduce this retri-Shockadin build: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/paladin/talents2.html?tal=05352050000132050132000000000000000000000000000000000502300500123013233100000000
To maximalize the damage output, the gear shoul be AP-oriented, but with spellpower 1H and shield. The math is simple. Where good spelldmg in TBC is 1000+, good AP is 2000+. Sheath of Light converts it into 600 spellpower and the weapon and shield add around 250 spellpower (And the new Improved BoM will add more). The result is 2000 AP and 850 SP, which means more damage from SoR and JoR than 1000 SP.
The Improved Blessing of Might will add more. The highest Wrath rank adds 350 AP. IBoM will make it 525, which converts into another 157,5 SP. And the Glyph of Blessing of Might (10% of BoM Ap converts into offenzive SP) makes it 210 SP total.
With retribution itemization, this spec will have tiny mana pool, but the talent Judgements of the Wise, will help here. If solo, the 60% will surely cover all of your needs and even 20% (in party situation) is enough to last long.
Holy Shock brings another offenzive tool, but the interesting thing is the talent Infusion of Light. When it procs (it can even from offensive crits), wait when you are on low health and then cast Holy Light with Divine Favor crit. The heal with 850+ SP and 30% HoT will surely bring you to nearly full health.
Speaking of crit, only the talents give you following:
6% for Holy Shock and Holy Light
5% for Holy Spells
5%+3% for all spells and attacks
3% against judged targets
For Holy Shock against judged target it means +22% crit. And the homogenized crit rating will add even more.
Surely, the DPS of full retri is still higher, but the Infusion of Light means much more surviability. Where the Holy Shockadins will be great healing support for their team, and where the retribution paladins will be great DPSers, there will be this AP-Shockadin tough enemy with more then average damage output.
Thank you for your attention.

I play in a 5-pally instancing group right now with one prot, two ret, and two holy... we make builds that complement one another (all the blessings, auras, etc), and BOTH holys intend to make shock-friendly heavy ret builds... skipping beacon for more DPS and flexibility. The ret tree gives a LOT for holy shock builds now...
Here are the two rough builds right now (one picks up Wisdom and Concentration for the group, the other goes deeper into ret):

So do Shockadins melee? Cause from what I understand, every six seconds you get to use two spells. Doesn't sound like EPIC DPS.
Thander Aug 17th 2008 1:57PM
A lot of their damage still comes from melee, just more will come from Holy Shock now with the lower cooldown.
In Live the typical rotation is Seal of the Crusader, Judge Crusader, Seal of Rightousness, Judge Rightousness when its up/ re-apply the seal, Rank 1 Consecration when its up.
With lower ranks costing more mana in beta, consecration will probably be thrown out the window for soloing. It might still be useful in PvP if you can kill the enemy fast enough the mana cost doesn't hurt you.

You don't know a lot about paladins, Zack, otherwise you'd know and realize that Beacon of Light is complete and total crap.
Dukenukemx Aug 16th 2008 7:36PM
You just realized now that Zach hasn't a clue about Paladins? You'd think that since he's a Healadin that would be his area of expertise.
Go look at his articles around Retribution and Protection. They say the WoW Paladin forums are bad, but there's more correct and useful info there then Zach has.
Who else would actually talk about the Shockadin spec.
BTW, if you're a Paladin that wants to go Retribution then please visit www.retpaladin.com . DO NOT READ Zach's articles.
