Forum post of the day: Born with a plastic spoon
Aside from players that are bitter because they missed out on Recruit-a-Friend benefits, is there anything wrong with this program. Kuahs of Kil'jaeden has encountered problems with raising enough cash to keep up with gear and ability upgrades. He has a level 70 character, but rerolled with his recruit on another server. He can't simply send money down from his main, and is sitting at level twenty-two with level twelve abilities.
Many posters suggested sending down money from a main character, which isn't so helpful on a new server. Others made the usual suggestion of gathering skills for sale on the auction house. While this is a good suggestion, mining and herbalism will suffer the same problem of being outpaced by leveling. There is always the option of begging for gold in major cities, though I personally don't recommend this method.
My other concern is that the massive bonus to experience points will be detrimental to new players actually getting WoW experience. Not only are they leveling at a blisteringly rapid pace, but they also are also always joined by someone with more WoW time under their belts so that they don't have to learn how to get themselves out of sticky situations. Then again, the pattern that I've noticed is that recruits are infrequently new players. Most of the people recruits I know are actually secondary accounts by veteran players or folks looking for a good time to come back to the game.
In most cases, folks will roll on their main servers with this new system, which eliminates the problem. I'm afraid the RAF bonus will encourage gold buying in the end. What suggestions do you have for folks outpacing their gold production with their experience?

This "Recruit a friend" is already a stupid ideea.. I understand that Blizz is trying to bring more players in WoW and I'm glad to see new faces around but this RAF is out of limits..
Like the majority of WoW players i've leveled my characters with a lot of work and frustrations and now they, the "RAF"-ers, are going through levels and Azeroth like a knife through butter...
Imo, this is unfair. And it's not QQ, for all you that wanna' say it... it's just frustration...
I have now a lvl 34 paladin going from behind and I see those newbies leveling 10 levels in the time thet I do 1! Is this fair?
What's the point? Bringing more and more players and "push up" them or respecting some rules here, where all players are equal, Horde or Alliance as well?

lvls 1-10 are supposed to be very quick, an experienced player can do it in undcer 2 hours. But i still understand where you are coming from. lvling should not be made easier otherwise they'll only be doing a few quests in each area before going onto the next. This caps at 60 if im not mistaken. This means that as soon as they hit 60 suddenly what is normally a reasonable jump in experience between pre 60 and after 60 becomes a massive leap. your exp gain rate is less and the amount of exp you need is increased substantially.

I think he might have meant something like 20-30, which would make more sense in a rant of this kind :)

The 1-60 to 60-70 jump should actually be a bit more gradual as you'll likely have a good chunk of rested experienced saved up since you don't use it up while under triple experience. You won't be able to ride the whole of 61 rested (because of the XP jump), but combined with the bonus quest XP it should provide some transition space.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the RAF system when it's being used as intended. The recruited player only gets the XP buff when grouped with the refer-er. The idea is that you have a veteran player showing the newbie how the game is played, thus compensating for the decreased leveling curve.
What bothers me is when I see posts in the wow forums where players start up a 2nd account, use the RAF system and dual-box their way to a lvl 60 character in a matter of hours, or even minutes. I find it ironic that Blizz discourages gold buying and account selling, yet leaves the barn door wide open for those that have more RL $$ to have a distinct advantage over those playing the game as intended.

ok, to explain i have two 70s and my wife has a 70 too. i started up a new account last week to try multiboxing(for a total of 3 accounts). now with MB u do have to have a main to give u money since its rlly hard to gather/farm with 3 low lvl mages/shams/druids.
after a day or 2 i realized that i couldnt multibox with raf because my wifes account(with no raf bonus) wasnt getting any xp anymore(example, same 3 druids, same quests mobs, the 2 rafs were at like lvl 10, while wife was maybe 5 or 6). about this time my wife got jealous and wanted a second account too. since i needed n even number for the MB raf i figured "why not". so on friday 8/15 at 6pm we created her second account and with me playing on it, we rolled a priest/war combo(on a new server btw so we could play ali). 16 hours and 20 mins played time and 50 real world hours later we hit lvl 30. we bought our mounts, all our gear is pretty good, and we have all our skills. the secret was taking 3 gathering skills.
in those 16 hours we gathered about 400 copper ores,200 tins, 160 peaceblooms, 200silverleaves, etc.
we also sold all our cloth drops and the greens we didnt use. believe me, even without help it can be done and done right. can u lvl that quick, max out engineering, get a bunch of boe blues, and enchants? no but lets not forget, thats not wow anyway, i rlly think i wasnt wearing all greens until i was in my 30s on my first toon, didnt get a blue or an enchant til i was in my 30s too. as for epics, i dont think i get an epic til 16 months after i started playing. i rlly like going back to basics and i having to rlly stuggle to make money and get gear. and i plan on being 60 on those 2 toons by next weekend. as for my multibox 4 toons, thats gonna be ALOT harder. gearing up 4 mages with no instance drops is gonna be hard in the 30s and 40s. wish me luck:)

ok call me a noob or whatever but i cant for the life of me figure out what "will worr for gold or gear" means
im sure its a joke on bad grammar/leet speak/net speak but WTF does worr mean?
Kanuris Aug 21st 2008 3:43PM
@Guy
Recruit a 70 to boost you a few time through SM Library and Cath (Armoury has almost no caster loot), preferably a Protadin.
Raco Aug 18th 2008 3:24AM
I don't agree with this post at all. The RAF experience benefits only take affect when you are grouped with your partner account, and if you're REALLY so excited to just get to 70 as soon as possible and then think you can complain about not having gold..I feel sorry for you. Go out and take one day..just gather and gather and gather and hey, gather some more. You can EASILY make a couple hundred gold at a low level with herbalism or mining.
hoviboy Aug 18th 2008 10:46AM
I agree.
People seem to forget that this is a MMORPG, not the average pseudo-rpg game
hoviboy Aug 18th 2008 10:48AM
edit: not the average Playstation 2 game
Buman Aug 18th 2008 3:25AM
OR he could just not be lazy. Pick up mining or herbalism and spend a few minutes gathering to make sure he at least has the talents. This is seriously retarded, in the time it took this tard to complain he could have gathered the necessary money him self.
STOP EXPECTING TO HAVE EVERYTHING HANDED TO YOU ON A SILVER PLATTER AND QQING WHEN ITS NOT.
PLEASE GO BACK TO HALO.
Simon Aug 18th 2008 5:45AM
I was going to put this down, but really this is quite true. After an hours worth of herbing I could get over 20g worth of herbs, perhaps more. Especially Briarthorn and Bruiseweed. They sell, on my server at least, for 15g+.
I response to the R-a-F action, it's unfair. In essence. How are these new players any different to other players just rerolling? And more so that they need a helping hand in questing.
epsilon343 Aug 18th 2008 9:34AM
What's with the errant Halo bash? Seems a little ironic that you're telling someone to stop complaining and then you essentially complain about another game yourself...
Heilig Aug 18th 2008 10:06AM
Because lots of players come over from Halo or other FPS games to play PvP and expect everything to just be available at the beginning, like it is with FPS games. Outside of weapons upgrades, which are simply handed out in PvP matches in those games, there is nothing to upgrade: no new skills, no character progression, etc. It's that mindset that brought us arena and welfare epics, and it really pisses off the rest of us who cut our teeth on 60+ hour RPG epics and have been playing RPG's and MMO's all our gaming life. We enjoy the progression, the time investment, and the feeling of accomplishment when that piece we've been looking for finally drops.
When these FPSers come over and whine and whine until Blizzard gives them what they want, it sticks in our craw, and we would prefer that they just go back to Halo and stop messing with our game. The next time you get ganked and have your corpse teabagged, you can thank Halo and the other FPS games, because you can be sure that we didn't come up with that particular nicety.
Panaçea Aug 18th 2008 12:37PM
Because I'm sure this is your game...
aaronomus Aug 20th 2008 5:11AM
@epsilon343
because Halo is a piece of drivel for the console tards, whereas WoW is a delicacy of the PC-gaming master race.
Durmase Aug 18th 2008 3:28AM
I have recently rerolled on another server (fancied the idea of RPing), and have found getting a character gold from scratch no problem at all. Just by mining every vein and selling the ores/bars on the AH along with any greens I don't need, I've managed to afford all training, my mount and am currently sat with 120G at level 32. i realise the supply/demand for metals may differ from real-to-realm but I think there's always gonna be level 70s or alts who want to blast their bs/jc/engineering without expending all that time running around looking for copper veins.
Andrew Welch Aug 18th 2008 3:31AM
Something I have been thinking about is the effect of this on character and gold sellers.
PeeWee Aug 18th 2008 3:35AM
Never had less than 100G at level 20. He's just lazy and QQ:ing.
