Petaholics Anonymous releases a pet name generator
About a month ago, we posted in anticipation of a pet name generator that Petaholics Anonymous was working on (especially of interest to me, since I've been playing my Hunter like crazy lately), and now the Pet-o-licious Namerator is now up and running. Right now, I've got a raptor that I've named Jumpy, but I very well could have named it "Bahir" or "Claws," both good names out of the Namerator. As was decided back on the poll, PA has apparently put the names into Silly and Serious categories, so you choose your pet's family and whether you want a silly or serious name, and you can choose from the ones that pop out (and if you don't like any of them, you can click Generate again and you'll get more). If you've got a great pet name that's not in there, you can submit some more, as well, and apparently Bats are the most needed category (though I really love "Guano" as a silly Bat name, and "Vlad" as serious -- why would you need anything else?). Definitely some fun ideas in there for Hunters to choose from. Unfortunately, we'll probably still see Hunters going around with their pet "Cat" following them (so boring!), but maybe this will help.

I've named my pets after My best WoW Friends. Most of which are healers or a few dps. They told me
I couldn't name it after the tank because they healers might get confused (Wtf?). And fi you ever do arenas it's WONDERFUL to name your pet after your healer. it screws with people's macros from what I heard. I never noticed the difference I just like paying a tribute to the people who've helped me level and pregress through the game especially if it's a rare pet and one of them helped me get it. Plus just typing their name is ALOT easier then spending hours making up something silly in my opinion.

I'm not sure after patch 2.4, but before, threat meters couldn't tell the difference between two separate things gaining threat if they had the same name. It would all be lumped into the same spot on the meter. So DPS might look at the meter and think they have extra room to DPS when it reality they are close to the tanks threat. I think after 2.4 it's possible to tell the pet's owner to avoid this problem.

Pets should be named exactly like the hunter or another arena partner to mess people's /target addons.
Ametrine Aug 18th 2008 5:46PM
That's now considered an exploit and is a banning risk.
PeeWee Aug 19th 2008 5:15PM
That was considered an exploit and Blizzard brought forth the banhammer.

Whoever named their hunter Legolass should have also used a generator.

saiforune - another popular one is to name your pet after shammy totems - really screws with totem killing macros

Oh my fudging god that would be AWESOME!!!!
Thanks for the tip! =P

Also considered an exploit. Enjoy your time away from WOW.

I'm fairly certain that they (blues) once stated that naming pets to specifically confuse target macros was considered unsportsmanlike, and they were looking toward implementing a way of stopping it.
I guess, keep doing it while you still can, but don't be surprised if they take away that option in the future.

ROFL, "unsportsmanlike" what an odd choice of words for PVP.
"I say there chap, would you mind not intervening with this fight between me and this here Orc, it's one on one don't you know, take your turn. I've almost killed him. What you've used a potion, why that's not in the rules...now chaps one at a time - one at a time I tell you... gaaaarrrrhh".
I suspect the true reason you can't name pets / characters after is that it destroys the element of role-play for most players. That being said, I think most rogues choose very short names (helps them hide behind trees I guess), which is technically an exploit of game mechanics...Also what about those hunters that like to name their cats "dog" (not my sense of humour but there you go).
If you really want to confuse players, give your hunter a name like "Fluffy" and call the pet "Darkhunter" or similar, I doubt that's breaking the rules.

Finally, a solution for those not even imaginative enough to come up with clichéd, overused and terrible pet names by themselves.
Should be a perfect fit for the all the Lllegghohlasses out there.

Have you actually looked at it? The silly names may be mostly be jokes that we've all heard before, but a lot of the serious names are quite imaginative and interesting. And no one said that you can't use what comes up as inspiration for your own unique pet name. That's how I come up with some of my pet names, albeit I'm generally inspired by mythological references because I like names that have meanings behind them.

Once I was in AV and I saw a hunter pet named Jizzrag. Think that's in the list of pet names?
Duco Aug 18th 2008 5:29PM
My current pet is named 'Libartik'!
Bimmi Aug 18th 2008 5:49PM

My boar is named "Adobo" for those times where, you know, he doesn't make it. At least it's delicious.
