Firestones and Spellstones never took up the off-hand slot, they always went in the Ranged slot. Do your homework.

I would urge you to do the same.
They changed this from off-hand to ranged slot early on in TBC.

yes they were originally offhand and spellstones wiped all magic effects on you and created a spell absorption shield around you for a few seconds when you used them and they were consumed... then in tbc they made them wand slot items took away the shield and made it so they only wiped off negative magic effects and buffed the firestones damage bonus...
now theyve once again changed them in an attempt to make thm worth something... i personally think they shouldve made them trinkets but whatever... they currently have completely different effects and work like weapon oils etc...
