Around Azeroth: Axxarien graffiti
Pyramids are funny things. The Egyptians and the Mayans developed them independently of each other, in a great example of the concurrent evolution of ideas. Some people refuse to believe this could happen, and maintain that both styles of pyramids were actually the creations of Atlanteans/aliens/a more spiritually advanced race of humans. I wonder what these people would think of this bone and graffiti-covered pyramid, erected by the not-at-all-spiritually-advanced satyr of Axxarien? (Thanks to Hawkblaze of Emerald Dream-EU for the pic!)

"Pyramid"? Did you not have your coffee and/or Red Bull this morning yet?
Blayed Aug 21st 2008 12:01PM
Coffee AND red bull.. The new cool way to kill yours... err.. wake up
mimic Aug 21st 2008 10:08AM
Looks more like a pagoda to me. :O
Badger Aug 21st 2008 10:10AM
Spinn's right. That's not a "pyramid" at all, if you want to get technical (but you probably don't, so no worries). ^_^
Elizabeth: Geographically speaking, where is this located in-game? I can't view the Wow Wiki page as our friendly neighborhood Networking Fascists have banned the site.

if I recall correctly this is over on Bloodmyst Isle and the area is part of a quest chain...
Aerei Aug 21st 2008 11:36AM
Axxarien is one of two satyr encampments on Bloodmyst Isle, the second of the draenei starting islands. This one is the higher level of the two and is on top of the cliffs in the central northern part of the isle, overlooking the northern beach. The pagoda itself is right in front of the cliff edge and is where the local satyr leader stands to wait like a good little quest mob for low level draenei to come purge him in the name of the naaru.

wether it's a pyramid or a pagode (it's clearly the latter!),
the basic reason of these things and why they may have developed concurrently at several places is simple: It's the old strife of MANkind to show everyone that your's is bigger, longer, stronger than everyone else's. Having a structural presentation for that seems logical and having length translated to heigth seems logical too. And chosing a pyramidal shape is simply the answer to simple physical and statical laws. The really interesting question is this: Why did most cultures chose concrete rock as material while some seem to prefer soft and feeble materials like wood and paper...
Candina@WH Aug 21st 2008 10:51AM
Most of the ancient world monuments contain no concrete. Concrete was a roman invention.
The pyramids in Egypt are all simply 'dry' laid blocks on top of blocks with no mortar at all.
Places that chose 'softer' materials did so because of a lack of harder materials near at hand. The Egyptian pyramids are made from brown and white limestone, both readily available in the surrounding area. Trees and other softer materials were not. (As an example, the Ceder used in the burial boats around Cheops Pyramid was imported from Lebanon.)

Axxarien is a satyr encampment in northern Bloodmyst Isle.

Pyramids/etc came about independently of each other for engineering reasons. Simply put, without internal structures for support (eg steel) you cannot create a structure of that size unless it's basically 'hill-shaped' with a solid (or mostly solid) interior.
Candina@WH Aug 21st 2008 10:55AM
Exactly. as an example of this please reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bent_Pyramid. This shows what happens when you building goals outstrips your engineering skills.

Pyramid/pagoda thing aside, this isn't something the satyr erected - it's a night elf shrine that the satyr have defaced, same as in Satyrnaar. (This appears to be the one on Bloodmyst Isle.)

Thanks for showing us the next screenie as well by posting it in the gallery ahead of time, by the by. =P
Elizabeth Wachowski Aug 21st 2008 11:23AM
Spinn and Mimic, I was thinking of a "step pyramid" when I posted it, but I could definitely see the pagoda as well.
Aerei, when I do a day or more of AAs in advance due to work or vacation, they show up in the gallery. I did four days' worth in July when I went to the beach, and no one caught it then -- /salute for actually noticing it this time.
Aerei Aug 21st 2008 11:30AM
Aha! That's a very fair rationale for it being there. Had a feeling it was something like that, but good to have it confirmed. :)
PS- Glad to see some non-Wrath shots for at least a couple of days! Not that the Wrath ones aren't terrifically exciting, it just gets a bit overwhelming after a while.

The screenshot's architectural monument is pagoda for sure.
The design of that stupa was come from Korean cultural mounument call 'Suk-ga-top' which is in Bulkuk temple in Kyungju City, South Korea.

Nice to see my screenshot inspired so much of a debate, especially seeing as I only took it out of boredom waiting for the boss mob to spawn :D
