Ask a Beta Tester: Is it not epic?

Fancylad asked....
Does entering Northrend have the same "epic feel" that entering Outland for the first time had? You know, the whole "stepping out of the dark portal to find yourself already in the middle of a massive battle against the Burning Legion, intense music blaring, frantic scramble to keep your mission from being destroyed just as it starts" feeling?
I've gotta say: Burning Crusade wins on the epic entry. You step through the Dark Portal -- which had looked like an impressive edifice until you stepped through it and discovered it was many times larger on the Outland side -- and into the middle of a tremendous demonic battle. The sky overhead is filled with unfamiliar stars and bursting with colorful flows of energy... or... whatever they are. (But don't they look awesome?) Pardon me Dorothy, but we aren't in Azeroth anymore. When you enter Outland you hit the ground running and jump right into the midst of the fight against the Burning Legion.
For more on Northrend's epic proportions -- and other questions -- read on! But if you're the sort who wants to avoid spoilers, turn back now. We're aiming to avoid major story spoilers, but this feature is all about beta content and we can't talk about the beta without giving a few things away.
Entering Northrend for the first time is a bit more subtle. While Northrend is, and I cannot stress this enough, absolutely gorgeous, it is still part of Azeroth. (Though a much colder part of Azeroth -- and you feel the cold even when you're in areas where there's no snow. Somehow, the scenery, the colors, the sky, and the music combine to make things feel frigid even when you don't see snow coming down.) The skies are the same as what you're used to and you're walking on solid ground -- you won't find any crazy floating islands overhead (except for Dalaran, which is relatively stationary) or be immediately jumped by your greatest enemy. You arrive, depending on faction, by zeppelin or boat and land in an established town. (Though you're treated to some particularly lovely scenes of icy water and, if you're lucky, penguins, on your way in.) You do immediately dive into some quest chains that pit you against the looming Scourge menace, but it's not quite the same thing. While I tremendously enjoy Northrend, it doesn't have that epic, into the fray feeling that my initial entry to Outland had.
However, I suspect that we haven't yet seen the whole story. Some of the quest text I've encountered suggests that our initial foray to Northrend was caused by some sort of major event in Azeroth which simply hasn't occurred in the beta yet. This may well tilt the scales on the "epic" factor of our entry to Northrend.
trebow asked....
With the possible inclusion of duel talent specs what is going to be the point in leveling alts? I have a BM Hunter and am halfway leveling a MM hunter but come WotLK I'll be able to experience both on the same Hunter. i love the idea of duel specs but it does seem to discourage peeps rolling alts of the same class.
The two-spec thing isn't in the game yet, but I can't think it will really do any harm. Let's get a show of hands -- how many people out there are really enthusiastic about leveling up the same class twice in order to have a fully immersive experience with multiple specs? (I admit, sometimes I do wish I had two fully geared level 70 Paladins, so I could hop between tanking and healing with no need to for regular respecs, but not yet enough to level a second Paladin to 70 and deck it out in worthwhile gear.) There are ten different classes and still plenty of alt-tastic experiences to be had even if you can have two different talent specs on a single character.
And at max level, the ability to switch painlessly between tanking and healing and DPSing and PvPing cannot be understated. I must say, I think this is going to be a good thing no matter how Blizzard winds up implementing it.
PimpyMicPimp asked....
Is the downranking nerf really hurting healers that badly? Or is it not as big of a deal due to the mana cost changes?
Though this change does sting at present, it's hard to judge just yet. Blizzard has actively stated on the forums that they're currently evaluating the situation and what we're seeing in-game may not be the final form. At present, on the live realms, I keep three ranks of Holy Light hotkey accessible. In Wrath, I'll just have one, and it will probably be really lonely on my toolbar all by itself. This change is going to involve heavy rethinking of my healing strategy.
However, my Paladin's max rank Holy Light on the beta realms actually cost more mana than it does on the live realms, so to say that this change concerns me is the understatement of the year. But healing spells seem to have been buffed across the board to hit harder, so perhaps it will all balance out in the end. (To add to that, different ways to regenerate mana seem to have been added to the healing classes, as talents or base spells.) I do presently predict that I'll find myself running out of mana sooner than ever -- and needing to blow all of my tricks to make it through a fight, whereas now I tend to burn cooldowns in case of emergency. My attempts at healing in the beta on a small (5-man group) scale have worked out fine, but the raid experience has yet to be implemented. After raids have been added to the game, there will be more testing to do.
I'm worried, but still hopeful that everything will work out in the end. Keep your fingers crossed for your healers, folks!

Blizzard can tune encounters so downranking isn't necessary anymore (make them shorter or require less mana). Also, they've created the classes with specific specializations. If they want a class to have a low-cost mana-efficient spell, they'll give it to the them. Not allowing downranking means they can control and balance the game better and easier and it makes for a better game. Some spells were not intended to be used the way they are being used, and it leads to balance issues.

While I think you are correct that Blizzard will fine tune it so that in the end healing might be more balanced and even more interesting I am still a little nervous about it:
-Old instances: I like to visit old instances. I wouldnt mind going back to Kael or Illy at level 80 to see if we could do it with less people. I dont think they will fine tune all these fight and while I will be level 80 and a lot stronger, will the old content work with the new setup?
-Options: I have FoL at my disposal for smaller heals I guess. I currently never use my highest rank HL unless its an emergency someone might go down situation. Its awesome that I will be able to cycle judgements into healing to make me more useful but for PvE I cant really see me doing much other then FoL FoL FoL. Downranking gave me a 'which heal for which scenario'. Now its either "Tank is going down, huge Holy Light" or "Tank is not going down, top off with FoL". Perhaps im simplifying but I'm worried my job just got a lot more stressful (only heal tanks that are severely wounded for max efficiency) and a bit more dull (Yes my heals are getting re-worked, Holy shock is more useful but...it still feels like there will be less thought involved).
In the end its cool that they want to re-work it if they think it will make some of the fights more engaging and unique. My basic opinion of the situation however is...I am stubborn and like healing how it is. Call me masochistic but keeping those health bars green is exciting and making this large of a change after so long is a tad jarring. Was there a current problem with downranking heals? (I recall the previous nerf and that made sense, Rank 1 heals were just too amazing but current downranking is either 'not worth the time' or 'I still run out of mana, just slower'. If you think "oh its just a cool idea to have healers do this" then why not work on a new healing hero class that works on max rank? Couldnt be any more effort then this reworking.
They might surprise me, I might LOVE the new healing setup and wonder how I got along without it. Stuff like this, however, makes me say "Save it for WoW2".

I'm in the beta and have told some epic stories about the beta.
The time I killed a DK when he was at full and I was at 20%. The time I visited stormpeak and blizz booted me back to valiance.
Etc. Etc.
So whats your most (short story) epic adventure atm.
Matt Aug 21st 2008 11:32AM
Blizz said many times that dual specs will NOT happen.
Respecs help keep inflation in check. Do you want to pay 100g stack for Fel Iron Ore?
Blayed Aug 21st 2008 11:53AM
The whole concept of free respecs is what was keeping me considering leveling my prot warrior to 80 first. Tanking is fun enough, but to farm/PVP/do anything else requires a respec, and I just can't afford to pay 50g for a respec on top of repair costs and consumables.
Well, it was nice having a tank, Rugar, you'll be missed.
Michael Aug 21st 2008 11:55AM
You mean like this?
Bornakk: We talked about this recently at the Worldwide Invitational actually. We are looking into allowing players to basically have two talent specs that they can switch between but we are still working out the exact details so we will have to wait and see exactly how it will function in-game.

In terms of epicness, I thought howling fjord (for alliance) was the more "epic" of the two starting zones...but they definitely both have a very deep story and hop into lore very quickly.
But I have heard many other people prefer the other, so its really a matter of preference.
Niekon Aug 21st 2008 12:07PM
agreed... I feel that Howling Fjord is more "epic" that the other Alliance starting point.
On the Horde side of things I think the zeppelin ride into Warsong Hold was rather impressive considering what is taking place right outside it's gates with the Scourge.

How goes the state of bear tanking with the nerf to bear threat thanks to the reworked feral instinct talent? I've heard increased threat was becoming a baseline thing, like the increased HP and Armor in Dire Bear form. Is that happening, or are bear tanks an endangered species?
Ryan Aug 21st 2008 12:10PM
The threat from feral instinct is was baked into bear form, there was no nerf just an omission in the patch notes.

So the new COT instance; Stratholme is going to be in Tanaris with the other COT instances right?
Does that mean that we'll be getting reputation with the Keepers of Time or will a new COT faction emerge?
Loadead Aug 21st 2008 12:47PM
Well, given the fact that there are currently three Bronze Dragonflight factions on the live realms, I imagine a fourth wouldn't be too hard. That being said, your KoT rep is probably still useful because of the portal from Worlds End to CoT.

I got a beta key today, wheeee :D European wotlk beta realms here I come :)

I have a question regarding the waygate in un'goro crater. Since it's a portal that connects Un'goro Crater and Sholazar basin, is it possible to access it as a level 70? If it is possible wouldn't that be a third way of entering Northrend?
Evi Aug 21st 2008 12:21PM
This is the first I'm hearing about a waygate. Can you elaborate?
RogueJedi86 Aug 21st 2008 7:41PM
It's in Sholazar Basin, and related to a quest(so it may not work outside the quest). The waygate in Un'Goro is on a ledge that is inaccessible from the rest of Un'Goro, so it's not a third way in. Plus Sholazar Basin is about levels 74-77, so I don't think you could handle it at 70.

What a stupid question, Im not one to point out how idiotic people look but saying:
'With the possible inclusion of duel talent specs what is going to be the point in leveling alts? I have a BM Hunter and am halfway leveling a MM hunter but come WotLK I'll be able to experience both on the same Hunter. i love the idea of duel specs but it does seem to discourage peeps rolling alts of the same class.'
is just about the most painfully stupid thing ever.
Thats right, no need for alts now your main can have 2 specs. No need at all. Now, with 2 specs, I can get a slightly different experience with my hunter! I dont need alts!
shawrk Aug 21st 2008 11:41AM
First off, I'm in the beta, so this question isn't so much for me, as for your audience:
When do you actually start seeing real gear upgrades? Especially if you're already in Sunwell? T5? T4/badge/honor? Green-quest-gear Scrubs? Are we talking heavy instance involvement, grinding crafting professions, max-level (80) Dungeon gear, or will the quest chains and group quest items just blow away our epics?
Essentially, should we stop screwing around at 70 and just wait for the expansion already?
Blayed Aug 21st 2008 11:56AM
It's been stated before that people in tier 6 we're finding sidegrades around level 76.
With that in mind, expect to replace t5/sunwell badge gear @ 75, t4/shath badge gear/PVP gear @ 73, and quest rewards right off the bat.
toole11 Aug 21st 2008 1:19PM
My holy Paladin has a few T5, a few of those T6 badge equivalents but is mostly T4. I did every single quest in Howling Fjord and didn't get a single upgrade to my gear. Then I went to the Tundra, ran Nexus once and got 3 upgrades. Not fantastic ones, but they were better than the gear I currently had.
