Breakfast Topic: Warcraft movie casting call

It's almost unsettling not to have any news on the movie, despite Blizzard's modus operandi of keeping everything under wraps until "it's ready". In fact, the last news we heard was how Blizzard laughed off B-movie hack Uwe Boll. While that's certainly good news, it's been quite some time and we're quickly approaching Legendary Pictures' pegged release date of 2009. While I trust Legendary Pictures (behind Superman Returns, 300 and The Dark Knight), let's take matters into our own hands this morning and cast the movie.
Even if it were done as an animation, you'd still need some actors for their voices. WoW player and Blizzard fan Brandon Routh expressed wanting to be in the movie, so why not? He'd make a good... uh... human, I guess. Varian Wrynn, maybe? We'll hear more for sure in the upcoming, sold out BlizzCon, but for now we can play casting directors and imagine who should play who in a Warcraft film. Who would you cast in the Warcraft movie?

Man. Enough with the friggin' gnomes. @#$%& the gnomes.
Jason Aug 22nd 2008 9:16AM
Amen. Gnomes annoy the #%*& out of me on a good day.
I really liked the Cinematic Trailer as it was, because this expansion is about Arthas (and maybe some Titans/Dwarves storyline too).
As far as casting goes, I'm sure they could come up with a way to get Angelina Jolie involved...maybe as Lady Jaina Proudmoore?
Dave Aug 22nd 2008 9:35AM
@Jason - Angie doesn't strike me as a good Jaina. Now if they were to cast her as Lady Sylvanis...

The trailer was really only missing the Lich King talking smack. But I guess that's been done quite a bit already (patches 2.3 and 2.4 at least).
Personally, I was thinking Angelina Jolie could be Sylvanas Windrunner.
Oh yeah, damn Mike Schramm and those gnomes as well.

I third Jolie as Sylvanas

All of you, line up. You're due to be shot in the streets.
Jolie needs to stay away from my movies. She, coincidentally enough, is to good movies what Lara Croft is to good games. She's what they put in a movie to draw the 13 year old crowd.
"OMG ANGIE! PLEASE GET SWEATY FOR ME! KICK MY ASS... I LUV U SO MUCH!"
Warcraft with Angelina Jolie in a leading roll.. are you f***ing kidding me?

gnome-killing ftw!

Do we have any information as to what characters there are in the story?
Anyway, Sir Ian should be in there as the human mage (there's got to be one).
Blackhorn Aug 22nd 2008 11:08AM
Very original.
New flash: Mages are not wizards. They are not old and withered. And nobody wants to see Sir Ian QQ for 120 minutes.

I realy hope the movie will show lore of world of warcraft we live in now. Would liek to see as 4 or more movies.... starting from the beginning, opening dark portal, sunwell, all wars, lich king, burning legion, emerald dream for god sake... all of them can have rly beutiful movies.i hope they will not make 1 movie about the same world but diffrent adventure...i would like that other people who doesnt play wow and dont like it see why we play it. that there is more than button bashing.... that there is beutiful story under...
souvlaki Aug 22nd 2008 8:47AM
To hell with lore! who wants to see the Wrynns?
The movie should focus the actual gameplay! For example, part I could be about a random PUG wiping in Deadmines. I am looking forward how they capture the essence of a corpse run!
Part II should be starring an AV AFKer. And part III could be directed by the "How to paladin" videos guy.
/ironic :)

i do rly hope you are joking !
tho i would like to see dead mines :D!

Hmm, I can see Ron Perlman or Mickey Rourke as Thrall. You could get ole Legolas, Arwen, and Agent Smith to repeat their roles as elves (although that is precisely the reason they won't be in the film). Verne Troyer as a gnome and Warwick Davis as a dwarf. I'd laugh uncontrollably if we could get Keanu Reeves as Medivh.

"Hmm, I can see Ron Perlman or Mickey Rourke as Thrall."
Actually I was thinking either one of these two would make a great Varian Wrynn, based on his legendary temper and the spectacular violence presented in the comics.
Blackhorn Aug 22nd 2008 11:11AM
Ron Perlman is already used to heavy make-up, so that's a plus.
I support the Perlman motion. Maybe not Thrall... but somebody.

Just an update... although the title did appear on Warner Bros' release schedule as 2009 for a while, earlier this year, "World of Warcraft" disappeared quietly, moved into the date TBA category ("To Be Announced"). Like you say, the movie will likely be released when it's ready, but 2009 is apparently no longer a target date/year.

don't put super stalker.... ere brandon routh in there. The only think worse than making Superman into some creepy stalker was his "acting". I love superman (you should see my collection) but that wasn't Clark Kent or Superman.
Christian Bale I could see as a very good Varian. I'd love to see Sean Connery come do something maybe do like LoTR and make him short to be a dwarf. can they make him stocky too?
That said time for verne troyer to be a gnome. and you gotta get Mr T. in there some where... with a mohawk.
Coren Aug 22nd 2008 8:29AM
Alan Rickman should be a mage in that movie tbh. Minus the angel wings (he's no pally you know...)
RogueJedi86 Aug 22nd 2008 8:31AM
Go CGI, get Crispin Freeman. I can't think of any particular character, but there's several he could fit. From the Lich King to Uther, he could voice them. He has a nice deep voice that can sound both scary and reassuring.
Badger Aug 22nd 2008 9:53AM
Rogue: I've heard that name before. What else has Crispin Freeman starred in?
