New Jewelcrafting recipes in Wrath beta build 8820
Tonight's Wrath of the Lich King beta patch brought us a small batch of new Jewelcrafting recipes. This push included a few trinkets, a new gem cut, and some jewelry that is quite incomplete. Incomplete as in they have no stats, even after crafting them. Oh, and some funky laser pointer things. They don't do anything of substance, but they're laser pointers!I've heard from more than a few people that the new trinkets are quite a bit underpowered for the level they're supposed to be, and I'm inclined to agree. 100 spell power for 20 seconds every 5 minutes from a trinket at level 80 doesn't impress me much, especially considering its level 70 equivalent, the Living Ruby Serpent. The new trinkets will be greatly improved sooner or later, I'm sure. Personally, I found the new gemcut pretty cool. The Enchanted Tear is flat +6 to all stats in the form of a unique-equipped, any-color gem. Not too bad. I'm willing to bet almost everyone will take advantage of that and use the one they're allowed.
We've stuck pictures of the new recipes (the one with stats at least) in our Wrath of the Lich King Jewelcrafting gallery for your perusal.
Edited an item description for clarity.

150 spellpower for 20 seconds every 5 minutes.
300 / 2 = 15 spellpower
As far as I know, 100 > 15.

If you would actually click on the link in the article, the level 80 version is also a 20-second duration on a 5-minute cooldown.

Actually, looking at all these recipes I am slightly worried over how long it is going to take a Jewelcrafter to acquire a comprehensive set of designs with this token system. I vaguely remember someone in the beta saying it will take a week of daily quests to get enough tokens for one pattern - if that is so it could well take years for a Jewelcrafter to get all the designs. Are the tokens only available from the daily quests, or is there some other way to get them?

Though on reflection, I think that this will stop people with large bank accounts just being able to buy mastery of the profession. There will have to be a large investment of time to become a master of your chosen profession, which is probably a good thing.

well 3 out of 4 trinkets are missing passive buffs so I think it's safe to day they're unfinished.

I'm willing to bet very few people will take that +6 all stats gem. It's a very obvious downgrade for all DPS classes, it's not really that great for PvP, healers will want more throughput or regen instead, and tanks will want more avoidance and Stamina. I fail to see how +6 All Stats is that useful for any class compared to +19 Spell Power or +16 Strength/Agility or whatever.

There might be a use for a laser pointer, who knows? But not if it gets consumed on use.

Wild guess, it's meant to help build a new scope type item for engineering.
Angus Aug 22nd 2008 10:19AM
Joker's probably right.
Engineering already uses a bunch of weird reagents. This would make perfect sense for scopes...

Oh well, looked at those engineering scopes. None use these. So it would have to be something brand new..
HOLY CRAP, Sonic Booster just made my tankadin wet herself. err.... Sorry.

The +6 to stats gem will make it easier to activate a Meta, and may also be better than some others for a class that uses a lot of stats - for example, it turns into a little bit of crit, little bit of spell crit and 18.2 AP for a properly-specced Enhancement Shaman.
Angus Aug 22nd 2008 10:22AM
You aren't joking about the "little bit" part.
80 Agi for 1% crit at level 80 from some accounts...
less than .1% crit.
I would guess int would have similar issues for spell crit.
If the gem was a green, I would be okay with it, as the blue and purple versions might be useful. But as it is, not worth replacing current epic gems or even Rare gems for it.
BenMS Aug 22nd 2008 4:55AM
Sorry, that should have been 20.4 AP, but only with Kings.

I don't see no new Fist weapons. I wonder if they'll ever add any new ones...

The laser pointers would be nice for following someone's target. Obviously it's not entirely difficult as it is, especially with addons, but one extra indicator of your Main Assist's target certainly can't be a bad thing. I wonder if it would work in arena at all?

On the lenses:
At first I thought they were simply a cute visual toy too. But there is one that projects a beam of both green and purple, which I thought was odd. Why both?
My current theory is that it might have something to do with Lake Wintergrasp and some sort of artillery. Perhaps several types. To put it another way...
