[UPDATED] The potential of Arena points for Wintergrasp

Battlegrounds PvP, on the other hand, is more open and spontaneous, even in pre-formed groups. No classes or specs are shunned, and every player enjoys relative viability and success. Giving Arena points through Wintergrasp achieves two things: first, it opens up Arena rewards to people who do not participate in or have limited success in Arenas; second, it greatly incentivizes participation in Lake Wintergrasp. The only question left is the matter of Personal Ratings, which is a requirement for most of the current gear, a trend likely to continue in Wrath of the Lich King.
Granting both Honor and Arena points for World PvP is an interesting twist to an otherwise lackluster aspect of the game. One thing I mentioned in an analysis of Lake Wintergrasp was that it needed to be compelling enough for repeated participation, and awarding Arena points are a step towards that. Currently, the zone awards 150 Arena points for a win, along with substantial Honor. The rewards seem fairly large now (including 7500 Honor) but it's highly likely that the numbers will be tweaked and balanced before Wrath goes live. It's also important to note that Level 80 PvP rewards are also likely to cost substantially more points.
Arena points from Lake Wintergrasp is but a small step towards making World PvP compelling, however. Aside from Arena points, which is mere currency, there need to be equally appealing rewards that are only obtainable through the Battleground. These include, but shouldn't be limited to, titles and vanity gear. Putting gear that isn't necessarily optimal for PvE but appealing even for PvE players might be a good way to spark interest in a World PvP Battleground, such as vanity pets. There is no vanity pet obtainable through PvP, although I've often wished for one, maybe with an appropriate Arena rating requirement that doesn't decay through Seasons and appropriately high enough -- maybe 2100 -- to ensure rarity.
The important thing about the revelation of this reward mechanic is how open Blizzard is into exploring options for players. If these measures make it all the way through release, it means that players will have access to Arena gear without having to participate in rated Arena matches. It will also mean that Arena points can be calculated in real time, rather than weekly. It will be interesting to see how Blizzard will handle the conversion or carry-over of Arena points through Level 80 as well as the implementation of Arena Ratings outside of Arena play. With small details being put into the development of Lake Wintergrasp, I'm just a little more excited to see how it finally turns out when everything is finally in place.

In before the trolls:
A small correction. There is a vanity pet obtainable through PvP, the spirit of competition.
But that is a seasonal award, and a random thing, not actually earned. So I really wouldn't count it either.
Otherwise good post.

to bad our server has a 3 to 1 horde rating.
these kind of servers are pretty much screwed in this situation, with no help on the way for balancing the population out.
i'm not sure if i've ever seen halaa taken for the alliance, and that doesn't even reward anything worth a damn.
area points AND honor? lol...

You might get points but they said nothing of rating which says you'll still need to do arenas to get your rating high enough to get the gear.

This is the best news I've heard on the PvP front for a long while. I've never really liked arenas, and would love to see all world PvP get some competitive rewards. Would be very interesting to see how many people continue to do arenas IF it's not the only route to get the best PvP gear.
I highly doubt initially that much will change, but this is promising. The drastically unbalanced servers (>=2:1) will obviously need some mechanics addressed, though. If they made the point rewards based on the balance in the field at the time, though, that would be a good start.
Here's hoping this trend continues - World PvP holds some of my fondest memories in the game. Would be awesome to see it as a more rewarding option.

I'm in the opposite sutuation, about 2.5 alliance per horde on my server. Halaa is a solid alliance town, sadly.
From what I understand, the mechanics of the zone are going to be designed to correct for this. For example, the longer a side holds the fortress, the harder it will be to keep. While one side may have an advantage in numbers, it shouldn't be possible for that side to hold the fortress forever.
The incentives should also help the balance. There is little reason for a end-game player to have much to do with Halaa other than having some fun, and that's why it's hard to get an assault group together. If we have a good reason, and know when the fight is coming (it's on a schedule, a little like Terrokar PVP), it should be easier to find some fighters.
I'm looking forward to it a great deal.

Go go more welfare gear, but this time afk people can get on in this action. Remember when an epic meant something?
vlad Aug 25th 2008 3:27PM
i can see it now, hundreds of lvl 80s parked way in the air right at the inside edge of wintergrasp afk and just collecting points.
really, blizz allready has an answer for that. surly

Aerial ganking!

From what me hears, there be air combat in them hills. If that's the case, it'll be fun to hunt and shoot down people that are AFK on the very edge somewhere. If I be wrong, then you be right, and Blizzard should address this plight.

Well, the good thing is the ppl at Blizzard actually play the game versus like most companies where the ppl in charge have never worked in the store and make policies and have no idea how they would actually work. So b/c of this I wouldn't expect this to be problem. Very simple fix would have a flight height in which ppl could hit them and they wouldn't be out of range or out of site.

A small incentive for Arena junkies to participate in World PvP. Nothing more.

as a Prot Warrior, i give this a big thumbs up !
Can't wait !

With the arena rating needed to buy most of arena and bg items, not much to buy with that points if someone doesn't do good in arena.
MechChef Aug 25th 2008 3:37PM
Good call on their part. I guess I always enjoyed BG's more than arenas. Plus the PVP weapons were better than the most of the gear that I ever saw drop.
Nith Aug 25th 2008 3:49PM
This is great news, granted some people will abuse the system but to me this is somethign I really wish was around right now. The arena points will only serve to encourage people to get into arena.
Although for those who dont care at all about pvp it will be useless, unless they add some non pvp gear (gear pve specs or glamour gear - pets, tabards, cool outfits to wear around town).

Ever think that was just a buff on the beta servers so that people could start earning arena points and honor to test out gear at level 80? Nah, they'd never do something like that on a beta server...
Lucas Aug 25th 2008 4:21PM
Death Knights are created on Beta realms with 99,999 area points and 99,999 honor.
Sonicandtails Aug 25th 2008 5:57PM
Owned in every sense of the word.
Namus Aug 25th 2008 8:36PM
Every char you have on a beta server has that amount of points, but you can't spend them :(
Rochmoninoff Aug 25th 2008 4:05PM
I think the rebalance of awards points is off-base.
It is very likely that we'll see huge inflation in the price of level 80 PVP gear.
This will devalue the points gathered by level 70 horders.
(not to be confused with the Horde).
Don't be surprised to see 10x increase in point cost for level 80 gear.
(This is consistent with inflation in other areas as well - 2x devaluation of Crit Rating, Dodge Rating etc)
It's going to be a whole new ball game.
