Wrath PvP gear hints at Arena Season 5

However, MMO Champion uncovered an epic quality 2-handed mace tagged 'LK Arena 2', which is a rather curious item considering the game files already have LK Arena 1 2h Mace. What does it mean? At this point, not much. A lot can change from now until Wrath finally goes live, but if we were to put some weight into the item nomenclature, it might indicate that Blizzard plans to tier Arena gear similar to how they plan to create two separate tiers for 10- and 25-man dungeon items.
To be honest, the Arena 1 items are more reminiscent of Outland Reputation PvP gear and don't feel like worthy Arena rewards. On the other hand, comparing the Arena 1 2h mace vs. the Arena 2 2h mace shows a massive stat difference and could be indicative of a tiered reward system. Is it possible that Blizzard would create a separate set of Arena PvP gear that doesn't require Personal Ratings but have inferior stats? It would be like running an instance in Normal mode, while the better gear is obtainable with (higher) Personal Ratings -- the PvP equivalent of Heroic mode.
Blizzard has stated that there will no longer be any forthcoming Level 70 Arena rewards, and that the Brutal Gladiator sets are the last Arena items before the Level 80 items in Wrath of the Lich King. This brings a few questions to the fore -- will Season 3 gear become available for purchase with Honor in Season 5 the way gear from Seasons 1 and 2 were? If so, will Season 4 gear then be offered at discounted rates and require lower ratings? Or will Brutal Gladiator gear be available for the same price and Personal Ratings for all perpetuity? With no new rewards, Level 70 Arena participation is destined to dwindle. While past PvP sets were retired, the Brutal Gladiator sets are likely to be the legacy set that will remain similar to Warlord and Field Marshal item sets for Level 60.
Most of this is bound to change in the coming weeks. In fact, I'm hoping they will. In particular, I'm concerned about the huge discrepancy between the epic 2h mace and the PvE maces glimpsed from Naxxramas. The Arena epic mace is at 186.5 DPS (806 top-end) while the Naxxramas maces sit at 203.6 and 203.7 DPS (up to 880 top-end), which makes the Arena mace massively inferior. Fortunately, all the PvP gear in the game are certain to undergo changes -- at least in the graphics department, as the armor sets and weapons are old models from Season 4.
Exactly when Season 5 will begin is another point of speculation, considering that the first Arena season began on January 30, 2007, exactly two weeks after The Burning Crusade was launched. This means Blizzard expects most players to take 2 weeks to gain 10 more levels and we can expect more of the same for Wrath of the Lich King. Working purely on the assumption that the pre-Wrath content patch will come roughly around the same time as the launch of Warhammer Online on September 18, it should take another 5 weeks before the launch of Wrath of the Lich King -- this means Season 5 is at least 11 weeks away. If this schedule holds, Season 4 will have lasted about 19-20 weeks, roughly the same duration as Season 1. With any luck, Wrath -- and consequently Season 5 -- might just be right around the corner.

I'm glad to see that that Naxx 2Her isn't completely obsoleted by the "Arena 2" 2Her.
Fingers crossed that Blizz really did learn that lesson.

My thoughts exactly. Not that I have something against PvP'ers, but seeing people in 25 people raids with complete gladiator set and only with the weapon's hit rating is sad. "Oh, why do I dps less than that guy with kara gear and spell hit blues?" Go figure...
I think is a good move by Blizzard actually giving a little more sweet to early raiding to have an "equalization" in motivation. In PvP gear you should get survavibility, in PvE the "kaboom" effect, not the noxious mix going around in tbx.
Eternalpayn Aug 26th 2008 6:46PM
I believe the OP was referring to the fact that honor bought weapons are better than what drop out of Kara. For example, the rogue sword off of Nightbane is inferior to the S2 sword.
Meira Aug 26th 2008 6:54PM
@ Eternalpayn
And that's exactly what I'm saying. Because of the fact that you can acquire a better weapon from pvp rather from PvE (t4 content in the case) and expect to clear right off the bat T5, you know there's something wrong, and finnaly Blizzard noticed that.
I'm really looking forward for a PvE gear to be actually better in early PvE raiding than PvP gear.

I thought the exact same thing. Why should Arena gear be equal to PvE gear for PvE content? I figure, you're trading possible DPS for your resilience.

I could have sworn Blizzard already had announced they intended to have two tiers of arena gear like the raid gear.
I also could have sworn they alluded to the idea that the higher of the two tiers would have higher arena ratings required.
I also could have sworn I read that claim on something linked on wowinsider
Natrone Aug 26th 2008 6:23PM
You swear a lot! ;)
Really it all makes sense. I'm not sure about the whole 11 week timeline though, as much as I'd love it to be true.

You're not dreaming. It was announced that there would be multiple tiers of arena gear.
Source: http://wow.curse.com/articles/details/9636/
Relevant quote: "So when Season 1 starts for level 80 Arenas, the best stuff that has really high rating requirements, kind of like what you're seeing for the Season 4 rating requirements, will mirror the 25-man Naxxramas quality. Then we'll have a middle tier that's below that, that has lower rating requirements and is much cheaper, but it parallels the 10-person raiding quality. And then we're also going have a tier below that of PvP gear, that has no requirements at all, and it parallels the Heroic dungeon quality gear. So we do plan to start out with multiple tiers right out of the gate, and we're going to make sure that the best stuff also feels, from PvP, kind of equivalently difficult to get as the best stuff from PvE. So we're trying to equalize the balance a bit better."
So this mace could well be the "middle-tier" referenced above, and there's still one to discover which will match the Naxx-25 ones (assuming the Naxx ones are from the 25-man version).

Ok, good, I'm not dreaming.
So why is WoW Insider talking like they never heard of it?
Zach Aug 27th 2008 1:39PM
@Brien - Because I'm an idiot and too lazy to look for the article even though I do remember them saying it. Thanks to everyone for the link, though. As soon as more info about it comes out, I'll write something more detailed.

"With any luck, Wrath -- and consequently Season 4 -- might just be right around the corner."
Do you mean Season 4, or Season 5?
Killah Aug 26th 2008 7:46PM
He means that season 4 will end with the beginning of wrath. Rephrased, it sounds like:
With any luck, Wrath will soon be coming, and by the consequences of that, season 4 will end (because wrath's launch, means Season 5 start).
Chris Aug 26th 2008 10:30PM
That's what I assumed he meant, but that's not what he said at all. If "Wrath is right around the corner", meaning its arrival is imminent, then "Season 4 is right around the corner" must have a corresponding meaning - i.e. that Season 4 is coming.
Thus, I think he meant to write "Season 5"

I had hoped resilience stacking would become obsolete. Oh well.
Averice Aug 27th 2008 2:16PM
That's funny, I had hoped that PvE gear stacking in arenas had become obsolete. Unfortunately that is not going to be the case and you are still going to see players who have access to top 25 man raids running around arenas with their higher DPS weapons.
Weapons better for PvP should NOT come from PvE, that just doesn't make any sense. Blizzard promised a PvP progression path, what they gave us was nothing more than PvE'rs having a constant advantage.
Dreg Aug 30th 2008 2:16PM
So PvP weapons should be superior to PvE then?
So its not cool that PvE weapons will be good in PvP but you think it is totally fine that PvP weapons will outclass PvE ones?
Basically you want PvP gear to be better then PvE gear is what your saying. Which is exactly what a vast majority of people hate about the current state of the game.
PvE gear should not be good in PvP and PvP gear should not be good in PvE but this is obviously from a logical standpoint impossible. (Unless the gear was not equipable or added no stats when the character was not "PvP Flagged".
Eisengel Aug 26th 2008 6:41PM
Maybe, possibly, remotely... there is the chance of not-entirely-PC arena?
I love the Priestess Delrissa fight. I've wiped on it a few times, but it is definitely a departure from the normal tank n spank. Rather than just throwing more LOS insanity into arenas, PvE arenas and PvE/PvP arenas would be an interesting way to swtich things up a bit and bring some actual skill into arena above CC and gear.
What if there were a Bladefist-like boss that would constantly summon mobs and bounce around between all the arena players while both teams struggled to be the first to take him down? What if your 3v3 team suddenly became a 5v5 with NPC players added? What if you had a gauntlet-like run where the first player of either team to wade through a group of hostile NPCs (and the other team) and reach some goal would win?
Arena needs some elements that neither team can control to make fights that demand skill, flexibility and knowledge of your class rather than mastery of CC, pole dancing, and a few HoTs and DoTs.
BenMS Aug 27th 2008 4:09AM
Would, in fact, do bodily harm to someone for the chance to compete in that Arena.
Charlie Aug 26th 2008 6:56PM
Makes sense. Best gear for the best players, but your not locked out of certain peices because you just cant hit that high rating.
Works for me.
WatcherZero Aug 26th 2008 6:59PM
Perhaps they are being smart and the first arena season will reward blue items, with the second rewarding purple. That will keep a damper on pvp stat inflation and will balance the fact that in the first 3 months a lot of people will still be levelling and gearing from instances, a Tier 0 so to speak since pvp is always a tier behind.
