Wrath PvP gear hints at Arena Season 5

However, MMO Champion uncovered an epic quality 2-handed mace tagged 'LK Arena 2', which is a rather curious item considering the game files already have LK Arena 1 2h Mace. What does it mean? At this point, not much. A lot can change from now until Wrath finally goes live, but if we were to put some weight into the item nomenclature, it might indicate that Blizzard plans to tier Arena gear similar to how they plan to create two separate tiers for 10- and 25-man dungeon items.
To be honest, the Arena 1 items are more reminiscent of Outland Reputation PvP gear and don't feel like worthy Arena rewards. On the other hand, comparing the Arena 1 2h mace vs. the Arena 2 2h mace shows a massive stat difference and could be indicative of a tiered reward system. Is it possible that Blizzard would create a separate set of Arena PvP gear that doesn't require Personal Ratings but have inferior stats? It would be like running an instance in Normal mode, while the better gear is obtainable with (higher) Personal Ratings -- the PvP equivalent of Heroic mode.
Blizzard has stated that there will no longer be any forthcoming Level 70 Arena rewards, and that the Brutal Gladiator sets are the last Arena items before the Level 80 items in Wrath of the Lich King. This brings a few questions to the fore -- will Season 3 gear become available for purchase with Honor in Season 5 the way gear from Seasons 1 and 2 were? If so, will Season 4 gear then be offered at discounted rates and require lower ratings? Or will Brutal Gladiator gear be available for the same price and Personal Ratings for all perpetuity? With no new rewards, Level 70 Arena participation is destined to dwindle. While past PvP sets were retired, the Brutal Gladiator sets are likely to be the legacy set that will remain similar to Warlord and Field Marshal item sets for Level 60.
Most of this is bound to change in the coming weeks. In fact, I'm hoping they will. In particular, I'm concerned about the huge discrepancy between the epic 2h mace and the PvE maces glimpsed from Naxxramas. The Arena epic mace is at 186.5 DPS (806 top-end) while the Naxxramas maces sit at 203.6 and 203.7 DPS (up to 880 top-end), which makes the Arena mace massively inferior. Fortunately, all the PvP gear in the game are certain to undergo changes -- at least in the graphics department, as the armor sets and weapons are old models from Season 4.
Exactly when Season 5 will begin is another point of speculation, considering that the first Arena season began on January 30, 2007, exactly two weeks after The Burning Crusade was launched. This means Blizzard expects most players to take 2 weeks to gain 10 more levels and we can expect more of the same for Wrath of the Lich King. Working purely on the assumption that the pre-Wrath content patch will come roughly around the same time as the launch of Warhammer Online on September 18, it should take another 5 weeks before the launch of Wrath of the Lich King -- this means Season 5 is at least 11 weeks away. If this schedule holds, Season 4 will have lasted about 19-20 weeks, roughly the same duration as Season 1. With any luck, Wrath -- and consequently Season 5 -- might just be right around the corner.

Ummm, I'm not. This is exactly the way it is supposed to be. PvP gear should have a bit less power and a bit more survivability. I know Blizzard made PvP weapons better than or equal to PvE weapons in BC, and that was a mistake.
Personally, I think they ought to limit the chance to miss for same-level PvP targets to the 1% you can't fix, and remove +hit from PvP weapons. Hit should be a PvE-only stat.

I agree to a degree, but the discrepancy is TOO high. 806 vs. 880 top-end? That's just STUPID. It's a massive 17 DPS spread.
The weapons, which already have a restrictive rating requirement, should be compelling enough to be pursued. With such a massive discrepancy, the trend will be to use PvE weapons over PvP ones in Arenas. And that's not good for the environment either.
You said a LITTLE less power and a LITTLE more survivability. Well, this is a LOT less power. That's just no good.

If you haven’t done it, jumping into the Arena as a fresh 70 can be a pretty intimidating, discouraging, and painful experience. I could see them tiering arena gear and making T1 extremely affordable to give newer players a leg into the competition and let them experience the arena without having to first spend 56479823 hours in BGs.

Having previously scaled WotLK 2H-swords, the Arena 1 2H-mace appears to be a BG/world PVP mace.
Here is a break down on my previous scaling:
WotLK 2H-Sword:
level 75 green - 119.2
level 80 green - 132.1
BG's - 163.1
BG's 2nd season 175.6
Arena Season 5 - 185.6
Arena Season 6 - 198.1
Arena Season 7 209.0
Arena Season 8 218.3
tier 7 - 198.8
tier 8 - 211.3
tier 9 - 222.2
tier 10 - 231.6
Then on to the next expansion.

Well i hope they just don't make it World of Arenacraft because now all you see is fresh 70s farming up AV's to get merc gear just to raid... When i first hit 70 it was all about heroics and getting attuned to kara and when people would brag about downing prince but now its just omg i has gear that i just sit afk in av and do losing premades or something to get so i must be amazing!!! But as long as they don't go and make it better than gear from raids in Northrend.

The blue stuff is probably the WPTLK equivalent to the current blue pvp gear that you get by doing rep grinds with different factions.
Am I the only one that thought it was obvious? :s

No, you're the only one who didn't read the first sentence of paragraph three.

Yellow mob bears many similarities to sylvannus Windunner. For starters, they share the second name, and are both rangers, which sylvannus was famed for before her demise to arthras, also, they are both high elves, could this be a relative??
HankD Aug 26th 2008 9:32PM
Vereesa is her sister... there are three Windrunner sisters, the third vanished in Outland somewhere.
Dinosoar Aug 26th 2008 8:05PM
Yes she is. That's Vereesa Windrunner, Sylvannas and Alleria Windrunner's sister. They're kind of like a trimunative.

I think you mean Triumvirate...
Taytayflan Aug 26th 2008 8:26PM
I always thought there was another sister besides the one with the pendant.
Palladiamors Aug 26th 2008 8:34PM
Yup, thats one of Sylvanas's two sisters, I do believe.
Shadd Aug 27th 2008 4:53AM
You don't do much arena do you?
SaxxonPike Aug 26th 2008 7:44PM
One says "arena", one says "honor". Think about it for a second, it just might click :)
Blue set is probably no rating requirement, while epic has one.

I drew a different conclusion. At about this time Blizzard may be itemizing their PvE high-end encounters. As you know, tier7 PvE will probably roughly equal season5. Yet, they are probably also itemizing tier8. So... perhaps Arena1 is season 5 and Arena2 is season6.
It makes sense for them to plan it out well in advance (tho of course it's subject to change)

Boo f'ing who. It's about time PVE takes center stage again. I hope we don't see PVP being the dominant role again for at least a year after wotlk is released.
miko Aug 26th 2008 8:39PM
i'm pretty sure it was stated by one of the devs in one of the many wotlk promotional interviews that i've seen that they were looking at having 2 Arena 'leagues' with gear on offer both equal (in item level) to the current 10 and 25 man raid tiers or something approximating that in wotlk.

To be honest, I feel sorry for anyone that faces a Fury Warrior using Titan's Grip in PvP. On that LK Arena 2 2h Mace, you got THESE stats if you're dual wielding.
186.5 + about 139 dps.
+270 Stamina
+356 Attack Power
+120 Critical Strike Rating
+118 Resilience
Whilst at level 80 in Wrath, these numbers might not seem as ridiculously high (since stats won't cause such increases compared to if this was level 70 or 60), I'd say that Fury Warriors will definitely be powerful in pvp and maybe even pve too due to these higher stats
