The plus side to the large population of huntards: you can easily reap the benefit of low expectations.
If you can: chain trap (using your /focus macro); have proper gear; use your pet to keep that stray mob that broke out of its CC off of your healer; show you can MD-pull those tricky groups onto your tank -- you will find yourself on lots on friends lists and in lots of good groups. Hunters are a great support class, and once you prove you are an above-average hunter you'll do OK.
