- Beware of the Daily Heroics. Every newb is lined up for them.
- Check your prospective mates' guilds.
- Check Gear. Not so much the gear level (though good gear DOES help^^) as logic and consistency. Hit cap ? Too much crit ? Enchant/gems ?
- Check specs. Do they make sense ?
- Beware of PVP gear and specs. Those are really not very good for PVE, and, above all, may foreshadow a lack of PVE skill/knowledge.
- Exchange 2-3 whispers with the leader, to get a feel for his/her mindset and sophistication. "me go p0wn pants-a-pe0n, d00d" = RUN !
- Are you sure 2-3 of your guildies are not also looking for pugs. Even ONE other good player in your party can turn the tide.
- Adjust expectations. At least 1/3rd of Pugs end up in wipe and acrimony. The acrimony part can be avoided.
- Have an exit strategy. Time limit, wipe limit, sounding out the others to see if they are OK with calling it quits, teach your pet/toddler to disconnect your net connexion....
