Skill Mastery: Penance
Healing priests aren't getting a ton of new tricks in Wrath. In fact, some of our old tricks are getting removed: downranking is no longer viable, so goodbye Greater Heal (Rank 1). However, like every other class, we are getting a few new spells, and one of them is Penance.
Penance is the 51-point Discipline talent, and it currently reads like this (at max rank):
33% of base mana, 30 yard range
Channeled, 10 sec cooldown
Launces a volley of holy light at the target, causing 184 Holy damage to an enemy, or 670 to 756 healing to an ally every 1 sec for 3 sec.
So it's kind of like the love child of Arcane Missiles and Holy Shock. But before we talk too much about how it's going to be useful, I should note that Koraa has just told us it will be changed as follows:
- First tick will be instant, so the channel will now be 2 sec instead of 3.
- Mana cost halved.
- A new talent in Disc will make it "more interesting."
Basically we have a 33% increase in throughput for half the cost. (This post by Koraa was a response to a complaint that Penance was worthless, since it did less in more time for more mana than Greater Heal.)
What is the role of Penance going to be? It might be informative now to compare with max rank Greater Heal. I'm taking into account Koraa's announced changes, and assuming the caster has Divine Fury (as pretty much every healing priest will).
| Penance 4 | Greater Heal 9 | |
| Mana cost | 16% | 32% |
| Cast time | 2 sec | 2.5 sec |
| Healing | 2139 | 4450 |
| Healing per % mana |
134 | 139 |
| Healing per sec | 1070 | 1780 |
As you can see, Penance still doesn't stack up very well in terms of HPM or HPS as compared to Greater Heal, which is a shame for a 51-point talent as compared to a baseline ability (not to mention it's on a 10 sec cooldown). [Be sure to see update below.] This table hides the fact that the first tick of Penance happens right away, and the second tick after another second, so if someone needs a bit of healing right now, Penance might still come in handy. And we have no idea what Koraa might mean about a new talent that makes Penance "more interesting."
But based on the numbers available right now, I conclude that Penance needs a hell of a big buff before I'll be thinking seriously about taking it.
Update: It has been pointed out by Malcolm below that the numbers currently in-game for rank 4 Penance are the same as for rank 1, implying that ranks 2, 3, and 4 have not been implemented yet. Therefore, here is a new table comparing rank 1 Penance, available at level 60, and rank 5 Greater Heal, also available at 60.
| Penance 1 | Greater Heal 5 | |
| Mana cost | 16% | 36% |
| Cast time | 2 sec | 2.5 sec |
| Healing | 2139 | 2080 |
| Healing per % mana |
134 | 80 |
| Healing per sec | 1070 | 832 |
When you take this into account, Penance is suddenly (significantly) more efficient per mana and does more per second than GH. All of a sudden it looks quite attractive.

priests need some love :)
so far i don't see too much of it.
Naix Aug 27th 2008 1:56PM
Indeed.
Penance should be instant and to co inside with other casting DPS 51 point talents have a stun/knock back ability.
Please Blizzard make Penance worth going for.

Serendipity & Imp Clearcast for holy.
Shield that scales (well) with +Heals, Mana return, and lower CDs on PI and PS.
What more could you want?

Nothing better than a channeled spell that can be used to have melee shutdown your entire holy line of spells in PVP as your 51 point talent.
If you introduce a new spell that does the same thing as your current spells, it has to be faster, cheaper, or bigger. Penance is none of those.

Not really being interested in PvP, I had a look at the Discipline tree when it was touted as being the best for tank healing in PvE, but to be honest I can't really see it. For me the holy tree has so many bonuses to healing received, discipline looks very underpowered in comparison. The use of shields to provide a form of damage avoidance rather than healing may be an interesting ploy, especially if threat is going to be a big issue in Wrath, but at this time I will almost certainly go deep holy on my healer. Someone that had run one of the instances as discipline was going to rerun it as holy for a comparison, though as yet I haven't seen the results of that posted.

It's things like this that make me think the devs have no clue about certain classes sometimes.
Bloodthorn Aug 27th 2008 9:34AM
at the moment it doesn't really look worth it no, I can only imagine a few situations where you would want that 1st tick right away instead of waiting a little bit more for a full Gheal, but that's prolly just me...
need more work to be worth it for a 51 pointer tbh, I mean, come on! warriors get titan grip ffs!! way funner than this perhaps slightly useful ocasionally

Your missing a very important fact... Your comparing rank 1 Penance, The numbers you use are all wrong and match the rank 1 spell, Blizzard have not added ranks to this spell yet. So at the moment it has the very wrong base healing. Look at the wowhead data and you will see rank 4 matches rank 1
Also Penance is a 3s spell not 2s last time i looked. It will be useful for putting 3 stacks for grace up quickly and can crit x3 for inspiration and Divine Aegis

Doh! Its 2s now... even better.
Imo when it has proper ranks and is not taking a downranking penelty it will rock.

Definitely Holy. I like my holy priest, although having a few points in Discipline helps too. I like the improved bubble, and a couple other early talents.
Mindreaver Aug 27th 2008 9:46AM
Maybe they are talking about Grace, when they say that other talents make it more interesting. It would allow you to get the full 3 stacks of grace on the target in the first 2 seconds of a fight. So if you take that into account it might be situationally better then a GH.
Personally though, Penance isn't as good as improved Holy Concentration... *drool*. They need to fix this talent, it isn't 51 point worthy. Maybe take away the cooldown, that would be nice. Doesn't feel like it would be overpowered either, considering that CoH doesn't have a cooldown.

Blizz hasn't given priests the full Wrath once-over that some of the other classes have received. Why don't we wait for that and then QQ (or not)?
WatcherZero Aug 27th 2008 10:28AM
Well they havent touched shadow or holy but disc has had two makeovers in late alpha/beta already.
Fletch Aug 27th 2008 10:30AM
Dunno, I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Blizz had said priests were the furthest along in the development and would probably only get the odd tweak here and there. Though admittedly what is written and what is the truth aren't necessarily the same thing.
Zeb Aug 27th 2008 10:45AM
This just in, Blizzard thinks all priest trees are very solid.
Ametrine Aug 27th 2008 10:53AM
It's a sparkling yellow line flowing from you to the target.
Wow, talk about a literally piss-poor talent.

The good news about Wrath so far:
We'll have tanks! Blizzard's making Death Knights very appealing!
The bad news about Wrath so far:
The tanks won't get healed by priests because Blizzard has made the class so meh.
Stephen Aug 27th 2008 1:45PM
If your main tank is a Death Knight, the main healer will absolutely be a Discipline Priest for the damage mitigation. The question will be whether many guilds will raid with a DK MT. It's still looking like Resto Druids > Holy Priests for healing in the current build.
Scheris Aug 27th 2008 12:17PM
Bah, I was hoping to be my guild's token deep discipline priest in Wrath. Rank 4 could make it worthwhile if that "new talent" buffs it, otherwise the bonuses that are deep in the holy tree still trump it.
Stephen Aug 27th 2008 1:48PM
It also might be more attractive if it didn't have a 10 second cooldown.
