It depends on if there is anything to spend the points on like armor or pets or something. People will do them if there is a goal to it, but if it is just for points then why bother?

A good chunk of the achievements will be completed without any additional effort whatsoever. They're things like, "complete this instance," "do all the quests here," "explore this portion of a map," "get exalted with this faction," and so on. You'll be doing them anyway.
The other ones are there to possibly prod you into playing in a way you wouldn't normally. To go on a trip to explore a continent or raid a capital city instead of doing your same old routine.
Some of the achievements allow you to obtain titles and vanity items.
