WoW Machinima: The basics

Every day, I feature a video by some brave soul that dived in head first into the world of machinima. For those that aren't familiar with the term, it stands for machine and cinema. The literal definition is movies made in a 3D gaming platform. Using this basic guide, as well as the other tutorials and resources available to you, you'll be creating your first project in no time!
Here is what you'll need if you want to make a machinima for free:
- WeGame camera - A free capturing program
- GIMP - A free image editing program
- Audacity - A free audio editing program
- Windows Movie Maker/iMovie - Free video editing programs that should have come with your appropriate system
Read on for optional and advanced tools, plus additional resources ...
Here are some free optional tools that will enhance your machinima:
- WoW Model and Map Viewers - Lets you chroma key WoW characters into scenes and pictures
- Madx's WoW Machinima Tool - A beta program that lets you adjust aspects in WoW, such as weather, camera angles, and even avatar size
- MyWarcraftStudio - Allows you to extract in-game audio assets for use in your project
- Voice Acting Alliance - A website where you can hold auditions for voice parts in your film
- Fraps - The standard for PC video capturing
- Snapz Pro - Even though WoW has a built-in option for recording on the Mac, this is the paid alternative to Fraps
- Sony Vegas (PC) or Adobe Premiere (PC/Mac) - These programs contain advanced editing functions, such as chroma keying the Model Viewed characters
- Adobe After Effects - A PC/Mac special effects program that complements Adobe Premiere
- Particle Illusion - A particle program for the PC and Mac that is good for fire, explosions, and a variety of other things
- CrazyTalk - A third party lip-syncing that animates images
- Final Cut Pro - The professional Mac video editing program that makes PC owners everywhere jealous
While there are plenty of tips out there for actually creating WoW machinima, everyone has a preference as to what editing program they use. Because of this, it would be impossible to show you editing guides. I would advise reading up on your chosen program, using their help section, and googling for tutorials.

- Ten machinima resources of which you may not be aware
- Video Copilot - Andrew Kramer's site for After Effects tutorials
- Youtube - While the quality isn't the greatest, this will be the site where you'll get most of your viewers from.
- Filefront - This site has decent quality and appeals to gamers, but you'll get an email periodically giving you only a few days to take your video out of a deletion queue.
- Machinima.com - The site has a nice following, but if your video is good, they'll likely upload it on their own YouTube account for views.
- Warcraftmovies - This site hosts a variety of WoW videos, ranging from gameplay to storyline. They let you upload the video, describe it, receive comments, and list mirrors of your video from other sites.
- Vimeo - This site offers probably the best quality embed, but they recently changed their policy on machinima to disallow gameplay and exploration videos.
- Blip.tv - This site has pretty high quality embeds, but they also allow you to upload multiple versions of your video, as well as the audio from it. When asked to clarify their machinima policy, they also stated that they do not support gameplay videos. Storyline and music video machinima are fine.
On a final note, I have to stress the importance of being familiar with Blizzard's Fair Use Guide. Blizzard has outlined some rules on how you can and cannot produce your videos. Among them, you can't profit off of them commercially without licensing from them. In addition, you cannot sell your work or charge a fee to view it. Beyond that, they go into detail on educational uses and sponsor logos.
Machinima can be an extremely rewarding hobby. There's already a large community out there that not only creates, but enjoys viewing, this emerging medium. What are you waiting for? Go forth and make me proud!

I read through it and have a couple questions.
1. Does MyWarCraftStudio even still work? I went to the link and read some comments and saw people saying it didn't work anymore.
2. Im guessing you can't create layers with Windows Movie Maker?
Sorry for all the questions, im just very interested in making a machinima but I don't do go buy hundereds of dollars worth of software. I have fraps but I highly doubt I will be able to get Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere anytime soon.
Thanks,

You can get an updated version of MyWarcraftStudio here:

It seems to be working with all the new patches.

"Final Cut Pro - The professional Mac video editing program that makes PC owners everywhere jealous"
LOL. I'm not in the least bit jealous of a mac owner despite final cut pro being a very quality product. I work on an avid system which I find just as easy to operate though the details arent handled as well. God bless an open market for making great products on both sides.

LiveQuartz (http://www.livequartz.com) is a very good free image editor for the Mac.

If you really want to get fancy, you can use Blender 3D to create your own 3D content to composite with your videos. And it's open source, so it's 100% free.

Thanks for the awesome guide moneymoo.
Question to every Mac owners here:
What is the best way to record in modelviewer on an Mac? Currently I use my windows partition, but that keeps me in Windows (a place where I dont want to be :p).
I've also tried the modelviewer created for the Mac, but the creator of that application has stopped supporting it (and its buggy at the moment so its unusable).
I guess I know the answer already: Just do every machinima thing in Windows.
But that has its downsides, because im learning all the Apple Video Editting software atm (like Final Cut Pro and Motion), and I cant use that on Windows.
The only way to make it work is keep switching between the partition by rebooting the system, but that isnt a great way to work.
So if you have a Mac and figured out a way to do this, please enlighten me :)

You get a programmer to port model viewer to mac. Simple(and difficult) as that. It is open source, and every updated to the windows version has the sourcecode published for anyone who wants to use it.

"WeGame camera - A free capturing program

You're kidding, right? While I can't necessarily say you should shell out for Fraps, as Iv'e never tried the WeGame Camera, I can say that for Image Editing, Soun Recording and Editing, and Video Editing, you are definitely going to need Adobe programs to do the job properly. That goes double for the last part. I doubt you could make anything properly in Windows Movie Maker, and from what I head, iMovie is decent. But that's for putting together home move clips or whatever. This is complex croma-keying, layering, masking, all sorts of other stuff.
I don't see the first list as a viable option, and Adobe programs all work with each other so you can directly import or export. And about their price...nevermind.
Pink Aug 29th 2008 5:35AM
Codexx- you are wrong. Saying you cannot edit videos without adobe because Movie Maker has fewer features is like saying you cannot make machinima in Wow at all because Wow has fewer features than Crysis.
Just look at what Oxhorn made with Windows Movie Maker on an obsolete laptop.
Eipuorgoom Aug 28th 2008 5:07PM
I think that's the point. It a list of free software that CAN be used. It won't be the most specular video in the world, but it will let you get your feet with without a price.

I dont suggest you click on the link for WoW model and map viewer... gave me a virus or i think it is a virus. called Exploit CVE 2007-0071.

Thanks so much for the article! I did a little research on my own about a week ago and from what I know, machinima is a LOT more complicated than I thought it would be, but I'm determined to learn. I don't have much time, but I'm hoping that I can make a video that's good enough to send in with my college applications, since I want to be a film major. Hopefully I can use this great medium to show my maturity and dramatic vision! Also, I have Fraps, but I can only record thirty second clips. Is this because it's the free version? Thanks again!

impressive.
