Warriors and Beta build 8885
I'm warning you now, any further reading will contain spoilers for talents and skills for warriors in Wrath of the Lich King. You cannot say you were not warned, if not by the title of the post, then by me now.Overall, the changes are deceptive. They look small at first, until you really stop and think about them. The biggest changes are also a little baffling, but not necessarily bad. You can't really expect sweeping changes two builds in a row, so it's really not terribly surprising that prot didn't get the big review we've been waiting for to date. On the whole, the changes aren't anything to get worked up over, but they do seem to be heading towards a desire to balance threat generation, and so I applaud them even if I don't think they were entirely successful.
I've dithered enough: on to the changes, concealed from view behind the jump.
First up are skills: we get a new skill at level 80, Weapon Throw, which allows you to throw your weapon for high threat and is intended to do damage based on attack power. Posts on the forums indicate it may be bugged, but if it gets straightened out we're looking at the warrior version of the paladin shield pull. Since it's attack power based, clearly they're looking to avoid warriors switching to their highest damage weapon for the throw, although I suppose you could switch to the highest attack power option. Both Execute and Revenge had their base damage reduced and attack power scaling added, Shield Wall had its based damage reduction reduced to 50%, and Disarm had its rage cost reduced from 20 to 15 rage. Battle Shout is now raid wide (but since it doesn't stack with Blessing of Might, that's a big so what, who cares sort of change) and Shield Block had its duration increased to ten seconds.
There are more changes in the talents: Trauma and Sudden Death have switched positions in the arms tree, while Strength of Arms has moved down a tier. Rampage's range has now been extended to all party or raid members within 45 yards, and it's now clearly marked as an enrage, allowing you to use it to make an Enraged Assault attack, which is good because the buff is totally wasted now if you have a feral druid around. Precision moves from Tier 7 down to Tier 5 in the Fury tree, making it easier for other specs to pick up (although not much easier).
Prot sees the most change. First off, Shockwave does basically twice as much damage, up to 50% of your attack power. Sword and Board has been tweaked upwards, using a 3/6/9/12/15% progression instead of the previous 2 to 10% progression. Safeguard moves to Tier 8 and changes to a 2 point talent with 30/60% reduction to damage on the target, and 50/100% chance to remove all movement impairing effects when it is used. Critical Block gains up to 15% to critical chance for Shield Slams in addition to its previous effect. Improved Defensive Stance is now a 2 point talent reducing all spell damage by 3/6% and gives you a chance to become enraged on a successful Block, Dodge or Parry (50/100% chance) increasing your melee damage by 5/10% for 12 seconds. This of course means you'll be able to use Enraged Assault as well.
Vigilance now applies taunt refresh to the next three attacks and lasts 30 minutes. Improved Shield Wall now increases the damage reduction by up to 10% as well as lowering the cooldown by 60 seconds at the 2 point mark, restoring it to the previous build's levels. Puncture now just has two ranks, meaning that you can't get quite as much rage saved on Devastates, and Improved Disarm is now a 2 point talent with up to 20 seconds savings on the cooldown, and also causes the target to take 5/10% more damage while disarmed. The talent still mentions shield break, but no sign of that old talent remains in the tree. The final two changes are Improved Revenge (now a 2 point talent increasing damage by 10/20% and giving 25/50% to stun the target for 3 seconds) and Toughness, which adds a reduction on the duration of all movement slowing effects by 20/20/30/40/50%, I'm not sure if this is a bug or if the first two points are intended to provide the same level of movement slow relief.
Finally, and I haven't tested this yet, but there are reports of a Charge talent in prot that allows charge in combat. As soon as I know more you will too. Updated: the new Charge talent does indeed allow you to charge in combat. The link takes you to a larger screenshot: I tested it by going to Tirisfal, walking into one mob so that it attacked me, then selecting another mob and charging to it.The ability only works in Battle Stance, so if you wish to charge while tanking you will need to stance dance, but it does work.

There are still no warrior glyphs to report upon at this point. The changes we have seem to be aimed at buffing prot, but in odd ways I'm not entirely sold on: the change to Toughness practically guarantees that PvP warriors will be that far into the protection tree.Still, there should be a general DPS/'threat increase for prot... Imp Defensive Stance looks absolutely lovely now. As soon as this patch downloads I'll go on and see what I can find out.

MMO Champ's talent calc lists the charge talent as not being used in combat, but not requiring battle stance. Have heard it both ways from various sources, would really like to see a confirmed test of this.

I do quite like some of the changes, but I know Improved Defensive stance is going to get a massive nerf before the content patch. A hundred percent chance to enrage on block/parry/dodge? That's insanely high! Unless there's a long time between procs, that's going to be way too overpowered.
Dominace Aug 30th 2008 4:54AM
Toughness is been made a 'must have' PvP talent, it means most people will be dumping 16 points into Prot (last stand as well) to compete in Arena. It will also make Warriors, especially prot warriors, the most Mobile melee class in the game.
15 second Out of Combat charge
15 second In combat charge
30 second Intercept
50%- Snare reduction
On top of that, my warrior friends 'Throw Weapon' tool tip shows it or hitting for 3000~ dmg, wtf? 0.5 seconds ranged attack that hits harder than execute?
Matthew Rossi Aug 30th 2008 7:06AM
The Throw Weapon skill doesn't hit for anything like that. So far it seems to hit for about 400 at most with 2200 AP. The tooltip SAYS much higher, but that's what my combat log indicates.

The key things here are Scaling for more skills and blizzards promise of making Prot cooler.
IMO warriors already scaled extremely well but all skills should scale so its ok.Tuning on any overscaling if needed.
The throw skills is awsome too.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Prot tree changes. Generally I welcome the de-bloating of it and extra damage is always welcome. However, I had sort of hoped to get a new toy besides shockwave. Instead we're still stuck with that placeholder "Vigilance."
Give us a new fun trick, instead of adding more RNG-elements to our mitigation and tps, please.

I was on the test realm this morning and I can confirm that the new charge talent in the prot tree does allow you to charge while in battle stance in combat.
Alex Aug 30th 2008 8:56AM
"no min range, prot talent 'charge' allows charge in combat"
Wait, so does this allow it to be used in defensive stance? Because otherwise, I see it as fairly useless, I'd be dancing into battle stance to charge instead of zerker stance to intercept. Not a huge difference.
Matthew Rossi Aug 30th 2008 11:18AM
If you are at low rage, you can still use charge as it not only costs no rage, but generates rage for you. That's the main difference: it's nice, I don't know if I'd put it that high on the tree, but lower would mean PvP use and I suspect they want dedicated tanks only to have it.

Well, just looking at the talents on MMO-Champion, down in tier 9 of
the newest prot tree build, there appears to be an ability simply
called Charge:
"Requires 40 points in Protection talents
8-25 yard range
Instant 15 second cooldown
Charge an enemy, generate 15 rage, and stun it for 1 second. Cannot
be used in combat."
From that it looks like someone copy-pasted the normal skill in,
including the part where it says "Rank 3" despite only requiring one
point. Hopefully Rossi or MMO-Champion will update soon with the real
description so we can see what sort of requirements and benefits it
can provide.
Matthew Rossi Aug 30th 2008 11:18AM
It's a 1 point talent (I think) that allows you to charge even when you're in combat. That's it. It requires 40 points in prot, doesn't do anything else. Still generates rage when you charge.
tchernobyl1 Aug 30th 2008 1:40PM
I just came back from a heroic nexus run, with a point in prot charge.. not usable in defensive stance :/ i however didn't think to tyr it out in battle but I think it's just misplaced.
Lyon Aug 30th 2008 2:12PM
Hmm. I find a few good changes most mediocre. Imho, the imp def stance is probably the best new addition to the prot tree.
Its nice that they shaved pts off some of talents, but it doesn't make up for the talent pt inflation we pay for our talents. If you look at the other class trees, they get more for their talent pts than we do. They fold more abilities into each talent in their tanking trees so they can still maintain their uniqueness and yet they still get talents that mimic talents we have.
On top of that they have nerfed the rage saving from devastate and still not have addressed removing Stalwart Protector to the Arms tree were its renamed Justified Killing.
I can't even talk about Vigilance. I have played with many different talent builds and can say at least I don't have to waste a pt into it. It is useless for threat or mitigation. Here's a clue. You took a 31pt talent that defined our tree and gave it to all that can use a shield (even other another class). How about doing something smart and putting Shockwave there. We could talk about threat modifiers and whether it should be a stun, daze, knockdown and whether it should be a cone or AoE. But, that would allow better off tank hybrid builds which could be beneficial on multi-mob trash pulls and make warriors a + to bring to a raid or even 5 mans.
That would mean that another 51pt talent would have to be designed. This time get it right and give us a tool for mitigation. Not some RNG which I can't really affect. Not something on a 20 to 60 sec CD or greater. Give us a real tool while tanking. Something that defines us as a Prot warrior that isn't given to everyone else. I think that TG is an excellent example as something unique that defines warrior dps. Why can't we have one as a prot warrior also?

Imp Whirlwind, broken.
"Increases the damage of your whirlwind ability by 0 sec."
I wish I was kidding on that, heres the screen.

HORRAY PROT BUFF!!!! I've been waiting for prot to be able to stack up against other tank's buffs, and now it has come! Needless to say, I'm happy.
Ryan Aug 30th 2008 11:02PM
charge for a prot warrior...which cant be used in def stance. This ability is gonna need to see some changes. But then its just gonna end up as a offensive intervene. I wont be picking it up.
Reading through all the changes, it sounds like blizz is trying to make prot not suck so much for pvp. Granted i like to go into a BG and laugh as a third of their team try to kill me for a whole min. But lets face it, we spec tank for pve group content (cause we aren't doing it for solo play, heh)
Im just hoping blizz decideds to stop being kinda half assed on us. granted we are under the talent microscope right now so im hoping some good comes of it.
