Breakfast Topic: Titles! Titles! Titles!

What do you guys think of the new titles? Frankly, I think a lot of them are pretty darn cool. But seriously, in all likelihood, these first-to-Level-80 characters will have little to no experience of Northrend. Your realm's first Archmage is likely to have no standing with the Kirin-Tor, for example. The first Paladin to Level 80, your realm's so-called Crusader, will most probably have grinded and not actually done any quests for the Argent Crusade. Perhaps Blizzard will have some retroactive titles, such as Conqueror / Justicar or even Scarab Lord, which wasn't implemented until after most AQ gates had been opened. What're your thoughts on the new titles?

Somebody will be the first to level 80, what's wrong with giving him a title for that?
Coren Sep 1st 2008 8:57AM
Or maybe something like: "the Herder" for casting sheep > 1.000 times. That would really rock.
or maybe even "the Caterer (Sp?)" for casting a table > 1.000 times.
just a thought.
"Captain America" for throwing Avenger's Shield > 10.000 times?

The Divine Stormer
Oh yeah..... I went there

I really didn't think much of the titles till I saw Doctor and Iron Chef. I would love to be able to get one of those titles, but alas with family and work responsibilities I find it highly unlikely I'll be donning one of those titles.
If I knew the window was larger then a minute I might try.
Metal_Gear Sep 1st 2008 9:04AM
I'll pity anyone with those 'first to...' titles, congratz, you sat and did nothing but grind quests for a few hours, I will also get to level 80 and enjoy all the scenary and stories of the new expansion, I will have acomplished more than you but I wont get any title... lame ¬_¬
I think that anyone who defeats a raid boss should get a title though, not just the first ones. The ones to defeat the raid boss' first are going to be the ones that rushed quickly to 80. So this has fail written all over it really.
Seeing as the servers are tracking everything we do now, I think if you do something a lot, you should get a special title. If you trade on the auction house a lot, if you mail a lot, if you kill a certain mob a lot, if you end up in a lot of corpse runs or perform World PVP a lot (with people of a similar level) Even certain Quest chains should give a title. All been sugested before, but it is better than rewarding those without lives/jobs/girlfriends.

I find it interesting that this topic is so flame-hot / enrages so many people...
I find fault with a lot of the common angry views: People seem to insist, that we need exclusive rare unique honorary titles that everybody can get. This is impossible - if all can get them, the 'specialness' is lost: Think of the 'of the shattered sun' title.
As for the 'against the spirit' arguments, this makes little sense too: Not everybody is supposed to play in the same way and like to play in the same way. You can't have the same things appeal to both casuals and hardcores: If casuals like it, hardcores will hate it and viceversa. The 'first to reach L80' is for the people who love to do that sort of thing. It doesn't mean everybody should rush to L80. Nobody(?) forces you to eat strawberry if you don't like strawberry (Your mom may vary).
There are other titles! Ignore the 'be in moms basement' titles if you want a title, try to go for some other title. The titles necessarily has to require you to excel in _something_ - if your work/timing schedule forbids you to play enough wow to excel in something, forget the title.
Yes some of the titles say 'My mom's basement rulez' - but those players exist, in large numbers, and they need their product too. They (his mum) are paying customers too...
In a funny way, the whole 'titles' thing is an excellent illustration of why nobility schemes, through the times, have sucked :-).
Some people will have an insane experience speedlevelling to 80. Let them. They would have done it anyway.

I'm not against this in theory. In practice, however, most of the server first people will have been account-sharing, which is against Blizzard's ToS. If Blizzard could somehow stop the account-sharing aspect of this, it'd be fine. I have nothing against someone who decides to play WoW and not sleep for a while, except that it's really unhealthy. If Blizzard wants to promote that kind of lifestyle, that's their choice.

I agree with Amaris on how the new titles should b handed out.
They should give different titles for different classes for who they r exalted with
Jirv Sep 1st 2008 9:07AM
What if you are the first draenei to 80 and the first shaman to 80 and the first to level cooking to 450?
Would you be Iron Chef of the Ten Storms of Argus?
dotorion Sep 1st 2008 9:09AM
No, you'd be able to choose between
Iron Chef
of the Ten Storms
of Argus
cannedbread Sep 1st 2008 4:01PM
What dotorion means is that you get all three, but you can only display one of them at once.
Strabo Sep 1st 2008 9:20AM
The title should stay open for a month after WotLK is released. This way you can get the title without staying awake the next 5 days in a row.
Well, I'm leveling Furball and Kurenai rep myself to get the the Diplomat myself. Only 6000 more mobs to kill...
Bloodletter Sep 1st 2008 9:37AM
6000 mobs? That's it?
Oh, s***. Forgot to repress those Runescape memories.... Oh, the good old days.
Seriously though, what with a full time job, my ACCA exams around the corner and LIFE in general, those titles are kind of out of the question. If they extended the titles by a couple of weeks leverage more people may have the time to grab them, even busy losers like myself.
I'm not implying that the people who DO grab the 3 first to 80 titles are losers - but they are a very, very small and "specialised" - ahem , community. Sure, the should definitely be rewarded for not having any li - I mean, their efforts, but shouldn't other less comitted players get something too?
cannedbread Sep 1st 2008 4:01PM
A week or two would be better, with a visible countdown ingame, because then it would be semi-exclusive, but still require an amount of effort that is more than normal.
And the Diplomat is only for the 5 original alliance/horde factions (Exodar/Darn/IF/SW/Gnomes or Darkspear/Silvermoon/Org/TB/UC)
Radiophonic Sep 1st 2008 9:27AM
Recruit a friend to level 80 will get all the good titles. Unfair.
cannedbread Sep 1st 2008 4:01PM
That only works 'till 60.
Drakkenfyre Sep 1st 2008 12:43PM
Recruit a Friend leveling benefits stop at 60.
Balius Sep 1st 2008 9:31AM
I'll get the diplomat and ambassador titles at launch. My server has a pathetic rogue population, particularly rogues as mains, so there's a very minute chance that I might be in the contention for that. Either way, I'm happy enough without showing off my e-peen.
I do hope that there are more titles out there rewarding unusual or unconventional achievements, reflecting what each player actually chooses to spend his time doing. Server firsts are grand, but as someone on a server full of "of the Shattered Sun" titles, more variety and personality would be nice.
Even a title based on what spec you mainly go would be swell.
Kuri Sep 1st 2008 10:16AM
"First to" titles should be reserved for those who down top-end bosses. Other titles, like racial titles, should be acquirable by anyone who has an interest in associating themselves with that aspect of their game. Immerse me. Allow me to be a proud Gnome, or revel in the fact that I'm from the Darkspear tribe, and let me show that.
Blizzard have stated that they don't want people rushing through their content. And now, they're saying that their content isn't important, bragging rights are.
Honestly, I'm very irritated by this proposition. Let titles be gained by people who aren't there for the opening minutes of an expansion. Let there be something left which is special for those who come later. Quit catering to the pinnacle 0.001%
