Allow me to introduce my shield to your face
Ghostcrawler posted fairly heavily on the Warrior forums the other day, and while Warriors are not especially my territory, something the crabman said reminded me of something I've really liked about Wrath so far. Referencing Gladiator, "Watch how Maximus uses his shield -- he isn't cowering behind it -- he's bashing people in the face with it. Shields should be a viable form of combat, not the option to avoid combat." This was said in the context of Protection possibly being viable in the arenas in the nebulous future (not anytime soon), but it reminded me of general playstyles anyway.
To some extent, Warriors have fought like this for quite awhile. Shield Bash, Shield Slam, things like that. It wasn't just Shield Block. However, none of that stuff hit very hard. Sure, Protection Warriors shouldn't be able to rock the DPS with their shield, but Shield Slam was more like Shield Bump. The higher block values and thus higher Shield Slam damage is exciting, and the addition of Sword and Board puts even more emphasis on the shield.
Protection Paladins get some of this, too. It's not just about blocking via Holy Shield. The Burning Crusade added Avenger's Shield, and Wrath of the Lich King is taking it farther with Shield of Righteousness. At least to me, this seems like a fun direction. When I'm tanking, I don't like to envision my Paladin huddled behind their shield and occasionally poking their sword out at something with their eyes squeezed shut. I want to go in there and bash heads, and barrel things over with my shield.
I much prefer thinking of my shield as another weapon, and I'm glad to see that's being explored further by the devs.

Just getting my prot warrior up to speed, by finally getting uncrit/uncrushable, so she's mostly in quest blues and some crafted and rep purples. As prot spec, I just don't put out ANY damage at all. In fact, without shield slam I would never do ANY damage. Sure, I love devestate, but if I want to see a four digit hit, it will be with my shield, not my sword.

Not crabman, crabgirl (I think). I'd love to see a nice Shield Bash animation critting for 3500 and causing 30 seconds stun.

Whoever thinks they can get an idea about realistic sword and shield combat from the movie 300 is ridiculous...
If a Spartan swung his shield around like those guys did in that movie they would immediately be toast.

Luckily, neither warcraft nor 300 is intended to be realistic. They are supposed to be over the top, visually impressive representations of fighting. Otherwise known as cool!

Don't like PVPing against warriors much, but having done 13 years of 'western martial arts' - i.e. hitting people with swords, spears and axes. Shield slam should get a knock down, stun, or knock back effect.
And it should get a 'foul weapon' disarm effect against people using two handed weapons. Trust me, It works. You can also do snatch disarms with a shield.
and disarm should destroy a hunters bow ;-), not that I am bitter.
for the record, I don't play a warrior, so if they already get a stun effect, I'm sorry for being a dolt.

I was thinking knockback would be an obvious shield feature. However, upon further consideration, a daze (or even a disarm) might be more useful.

What treatises/research are you basing that on?
Not about to bash you, don't worry - I'm better with later-period weapons and knives, I really don't know sword and shield combat too well. Just interested - I've done a bit of sword and shield work (mostly from what I think was I94), but very little, and I don't know the area too well.

What is it with the defensive classes getting dps? My mage cant tank so why are people bitching about tanks doing dps? Horses for courses and all that...

I don't want my Prot Warrior doing as much damage as my 'lock or even a DPS warrior, but soloing is a pain, and the amount of damage I do is a lot lower. I'm lucky if I do 1/4 of the damage of my dps, raising that to 1/2 or 2/3 wouldn't hurt the DPS guys.

Fine. Give mages 1/2 or 2/3 the armour/dodge/parry of tanks and we have a deal
