Forum post of the day: Hilarious scam email
Have you ever wondered what one of those fake emails from "Blizzard" look like? The nastier ones are copies of real Blizzard emails, with the links subtly changed. Other scam emails are a bit more transparent, however. While we've identified some red flags for you before, let's add a few more, shall we?
If the email refers to the patch you "must" download as "a mod one" then it might not be real.
If they have moved said patch to an external website, then you might want to worry.
If the reason for the move is because, "recently, Hackers have been trying to crack our folders and steal every future project" then it is time for you to roll on the ground laughing. Just hope that Hackers don't team up with the Boogeyman, or Terrorists!
If you are referred to as one of their "lovely members who do not understand" you should get a medal, really. Their repetitiveness is dizzying. Luckily, they will "explain it shortly" for you. I think someone needs a thesaurus (or a brain).
The best part? To participate, you have to upgrade your account by sending them your account details, which Blizzard will never ask you for, and of course, your Beta key code. Just send it to an email address that ends in @live.com, and you're set!
Never mind that you're supposedly testing during the Gold phase. All those bug reports you'll be logging with the "/bug command" will be terrifically helpful while they're burning the discs.
Now, you'll be playing the same characters you used in the Beta, except you're not allowed to copy characters over. Have fun with that.
Their final plea? "Please do not delete this e-mail, or show it to anyone else." Most likely this is because they seem to be targeting very slow eleven year-olds, and showing it to someone else might get the poor kids teased. They just care about you, really.

Xero Sep 2nd 2008 5:17PM
Sadly, neither are the people who respond to them...

How do they get the e-mail of players in the first place? Are they just picking them at random?
Boldwyn Sep 3rd 2008 7:46AM
Yes, it's random just like other spam. I got a few scam mails on my publicly used email but no scams on actual email used for WoW account which is only for private stuff.
Jewbanks Sep 2nd 2008 5:17PM

Even though I hate these morons, there is a silver lining, they get rid of the idiots who fall for it, these are usually the same people who go into /1 General and ask things like "Whats better for my Warrior, this level 20 cloth item or this level 70 Plate item?" >_< I hate that...
Malkeior Sep 2nd 2008 5:49PM
How those kinds of people didn't get run-over while playing in traffic is what I want to ask.
Ametrine Sep 2nd 2008 5:53PM
The most epic fail I've ever seen was this question asked in /yell from a 70 Human Paladin standing in Shattrath:
"WHAT IS STORMWIND?"
Cowbane Sep 2nd 2008 6:17PM
@Ametrine
Probably someone who bought their character, love those people, they're so stupid...

hillarious?
this stuff is as old as passwords and computers. i guess if your new to computing and have the sence of humore of a horsefly then its hillarious, otherwise its just "whatever"
Rissole Sep 3rd 2008 2:06AM
What he said.
Except capitalise sentences and change "your" to "you're", "sence" to "sense", "humore" to "humour" (or "humor" for Americans), "hillarious" to "hilarious" and "its" to "it's". And put a full stop on the end.
Other than that, it's perfect.

As I've said before, people who fall for these kind of scams deserve to get their accounts hacked. Generally speaking.
eroch Sep 2nd 2008 6:10PM
Well at least the 'patch' wasn't a skeptical 45.8kb in size. 458.34 MB - every virus/trojan combined to date wouldn't be nearly that size would it? What the heck could actually be in that file?
Azhural Sep 2nd 2008 6:11PM
Survival of the fittest. I always loved scams, because some people seriously fall for them.
Ever looked into the log files of a phishing site? That's sick.

This reminds me of a spoof I did about the WotLK Beta Scams :P
