You're dead on about the rival and colleague - keep these people close and talk to them often. I can't tell you the valuable insight I've gotten from these types of people - stuff I figured out after 2.5 years of playing the game, that I then went "duh!" over. And Class/Raid Leaders really don't know it all - I'm quite happy to be corrected by a smart player who knows what they're talking about. Hell, just tonight I sent one of our new hunters to a couple guys outside our guild for advice because they were the best references I knew of.
