Here's an idea. If I got a 2h mace and my 2h mace skill was 1 I'd have to farm, like you all say, for hours to get that skill up to 350. How about the higher level mobs you attack with it the faster that skill goes up. So instead of having to go back to level 1 mobs (or whatever) you can start in on level 70s and in 10 minutes or so you'll have a skill of 350 in 2h maces.
Would that system work?

In a way it does. At level 1, you raise it by one point per swing, hit or miss. The closer you get to your level maximum, the more swings it takes.
Not sure what formula Blizz uses but feels similar to the casts per level used for fishing
