New options button in beta
In the LK beta build that just went live tonight, build number 8905, there's a new Options button on the login screen, just above Cinematics, Credits, and Terms of Use. What lies behind its blue mystery? [Edit: apparently it was there in the last build too. I never noticed.]Unsurprisingly enough, it contains some options that you might want to change before entering the game. Specifically, it has options for video resolution, video effect quality, and sound. For the most part, these are the same options currently available in-game. "Enable Reverb," "Headphone Mode," and "Death Knight Voices" have been added to the sound pane. "Disable Resize" has been added under "Windowed Mode" in the resolution pane; I'm not sure why you'd want to do that, though, unless you kept accidentally resizing the window (which I've never had an issue with, and I often play windowed).
The big innovation here (and yes, I realize innovations in option dialogs may not strike you as particularly interesting) is a master slider for video quality. Now you don't have to fiddle separately with terrain distance and ground clutter density if you don't want to; just drag the slider somewhere on the scale from "Low" to "High," whatever's prettiest without being too devastating to your framerates on your particular system. Of course, there's a "Custom" setting, so if you want to tweak all the little sliders, you are still free to do so. A nice change, and it will especially benefit people who don't necessarily know what all the options mean.

Old news, the Options button was added in build 8885.

Most of us could care less that you think it's 'Old news'. It may be 'New news' to you that only a tiny percentage of WoWinsider readers are participating in the beta, or are actively tracking the release versions.

always wondered why there wasn't an out of game options menu. oh well maybe they forgot about it for 3 years :)
Merah Sep 5th 2008 7:36PM

I'm actually looking forward to this. I play on a laptop and it likes to change the window size when the touch pad for the cursor is hit.

It appears to be broken on 8905 for Mac.

I'm pretty sure Disable Resize is live already since some time.

The latest beta build is 8905, not 9805.

Eliah should be very tired with 2 errors in a post ;D

I always resize the window accidentally, which causes lag and can lead to death. Good option.

"Disable resize" is as old as sliced bread.

In WotLK Beta Im always having to go to video menu and click ok to close menu to get my setting to take effect everytime I log in, May be they did this as a work around for people like me with the type of video card I have. Wont know for sure until Blizz feels like fessing up.

Once again, Wowinsider is ahead of the pack with the speed of their news...

I'm more interested in the Cinematics button.

I'm loving it. Especially with the new auto-settings for video. It makes it so people can have everything adjusted automatically if they aren't too savvy on that subject.

Quite nice.

The "disable resize" option is quite nice. Currently if I want to simulate a full screen in my resolution, I have to use Maximizer software to get rid of those stupid borders of windowed resolution. I hope this option get rid of it as well.
And for the people above that doesn't want to wait, get Maximizer... just google it or search in Curse.

I think the biggest benefit is that you'll now be able to turn off the music without having to completely load the game.

Bawwwwwwwwwww, WoW on easy mode D:
Blizzard should realize that half the fun of changing your options is the challenge of figuring out what all the things meant rather than just pandering to the casual market.
If this continue I may just leave the game.
