Penguin noncombat pets appear in the beta

A much earlier data-mined image gave us a glimpse of what we could only assume were penguin noncombat pets, but reader Alassiel has written in to confirm that two of her characters in the beta have now received them in the mail. You can see Alassiel's screenshots of her Death Knight getting hers here and here.

Elizabeth Wachowski and Zach Yonzon braved a constantly-crashing beta server to get more information and pictures for us. It looks like the pet, named "Chilly," is currently being mailed to players in the beta as a gift for switching to a Blizzard account. And yes, it is pretty much the cutest thing ever, which I suspect is an effort to compensate for Northrend being a continent full of animated corpses. As Alassiel's gotten them on at least two characters so far, I assume it's being sent to all active toons on a Blizzard account. We're not sure if that's going to remain the only way to get Chilly, but if you're in the beta and have a Blizzard account (or want to switch to one -- it's free), don't forget to check your mailbox!

Seems to apply only for American beta though, as far as I can tell after playing for about 10 minutes in a row on the EU server :x.

Let them give premades to the EU beta before the pet ;)
AndiM Sep 6th 2008 3:51PM
Ah no ... I don't care that much about the premades ;-). My warrior is still 71 and I want to level him up as far as possible. Just getting a rocket faster than light to 80 takes too much fun away.

So us on US servers finally get our own US-server only pet..What's the big deal? I mean atleast everyone who reserves a copy of WotLK Collector's gets a Frosty. Look at China only servers..they have what 4 dragons, plus the essence of competition, and the pigs..yeah, it's fair that US servers get their own pet. :)

And where is the EU only pet who get everybody in the EU? Lurky is just a adjustment for a big brashness!
kunukia Sep 6th 2008 3:32PM
Blizzard account? What does that mean?
Brian Sep 6th 2008 3:34PM
I don't understand what you mean about a Blizzard Account. I understand a "Blizzard Account" to be the account you set up for the online store. Currently in Europe there is no way to link this to your WoW account. You can't enter your WoW game key for example. There isn't a way to link your store account from your WoW Account either so how does this work in the US?

Is what I would be guessing. Seems like they are doing what Steam did, linking your games to one account.

Confirmed. I just set up my Blizzard Account, and entered my old CD Keys for Diablo II and the D2 expansion. But that seems to be specifically to download the classic stuff (very cool).
"Which game keys can I attach to my Blizzard Account?
The following games are supported by the Games page at this time:
* StarCraft, StarCraft Battlechest, StarCraft Anthology
* Warcraft III, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Warcraft Battlechest
* Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Diablo II Battlechest"
They send you off to your WoW account if you want to download WoW. There is no link at all, from what I can see so far, except that I decided to register with the same email address. Am I missing it?

In the US with a US account, I should have mentioned.
Hikaru Sep 6th 2008 3:37PM
Oh my GOSH! They are so cute! Neeeeeeed
Simon Sep 6th 2008 3:44PM
This pleases me so.
Chilblain Sep 6th 2008 3:54PM
I don't know about this linking games thing... every time I enter a CD key from one of my Blizzard games, it tells me that it's invalid.
Tridus Sep 6th 2008 4:55PM
Seems to be a beta only thing right now, I can't add WoW to my account either.
Zerounit Sep 7th 2008 4:41AM
WoW isn't one of the games you can register.

Pets via in-game mail? That sounds a lot like a collector's edition perk delivery method. I'd prefer Chilly to another whelp (no offense to whelps). Now if I could just pre-order the actual collector's edition..
Brian Arnold Sep 6th 2008 4:30PM
Does anyone know how to retrieve the CD key to do the account linking? I have a Blizz account and would happily link up, but I don't have my original key anymore, since I used it, oh, nearly four years ago.
jurandr Sep 6th 2008 7:27PM
I downloaded the game online through the 10-day free trial, and also upgraded to BC online. I have no CD's at all, and therefore no CD key. But if I do have a key, and I don't know about it, I'd like info on retrieving the cd keys as well.

Oh my GOD! MUST HAVE THOSE PENGUINS!
