The Art of War(craft): World PvP Achievements

I wrote about the many Achievements related to PvP, such as the retroactive Achievements that you can work on before Patch 3.0 hits, as well as the numerous Battlegrounds Achievements. Although PvP for the sake of PvP is extremely fun, Achievements will actually reward something that previously never got anything more than bragging rights and a silly grin. Today we'll look at the numerous Achievements that work to encourage world PvP.
City raids
One of the things I'm looking forward to when Achievements are implemented are city raids. They don't happen too often, even on a PvP server, but when they do it can be total chaos and a whole lot of fun. Achievements only make it more fun by putting easily -- for the most part -- attainable goals such as the Wrath of the Alliance and Wrath of the Horde, where players are tasked with killing five enemy players in their home cities. Although all PvP Achievements can be unlocked as a raid, these Achievements can be done solo or with a party and is probably even more fun and fulfilling with smaller groups.
The only difficult catch here is that enemy players are unflagged by default in their home cities, giving them the advantage. There's also the niggling matter of continuously respawning guards. One trick is to run into the city naked and purposely die somewhere close to a building in order to rezz safely at a later time. The bonus is that quite a few players will be baited into attacking you, thus flagging themselves for the next five minutes. One of the best strategies is to insert a Warlock along with two other players -- stealthers, if you will -- and start summoning the raid from somewhere deep inside the city. Of course, if you have a large enough raid, you can do it with a bang and charge willy-nilly through the city gates with all proverbial guns ablaze.
City Defenders get an Achievement, too, by killing fifty enemy players in any of their home cities. This should provide enough incentive to get flagged. Fifty is a huge jump from the five required of attackers, but it's simply much easier to get a kill with the help of endlessly spawning NPCs.
Faction leader kills
If you have a big enough raid, you can attempt to go for the faction leader Achievements. The Alliance are tasked to kill Cairne Bloodhoof in Bleeding Bloodhoof, Thrall in Death to the Warchief!, Lady Sylvanas in Downing the Dark Lady, and Lor'themar Theron in Killed in Quel'thalas. The Horde have their equivalent goals in killing Magni Bronzebeard in Death to the King!, Tyrande Whisperwind in Immortal No More, Prophet Velen in Putting Out The Light, and Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Storming Stormwind, although I suspect that last one will be changed at some point in the future when Varian Wrynn finally takes his rightful place in Stormwind Keep. Players who manage to kill all four opposing faction leaders will unlock For The Horde! and For The Alliance! Achievements.
The interesting thing is that these are essentially PvE bosses in a PvP environment, so you'll have to throw in some raid strategy into the mix. Each of the faction bosses have their sets of abilities as well as secondary boss NPCs (such as Vol'jin), although most are just tank and spank affairs. Ironically, these Achievements are done best with as little PvP as possible -- that is to say, try to have as few defenders as possible. While faction bosses are strong in themselves -- a full raid is recommended -- the most difficult thing about taking one down are the enemy players defending them.
When going for faction leader kills, it is wise to bring as many players and alerting as few enemies as possible. This can be done by planning assaults during off-peak hours such as 2-3am in the morning and using the Warlock insertion method. The lay-out of each city can be studied -- there are often safe spots in each city that is close to the faction leader such as an adjacent building where Warlocks can summon the whole raid. Surprise is the best strategy here and, done properly, can result in a dead faction leader before anyone even realizes that something is amiss. In fact, most of the time, unless it's Thrall or Magni Bronzebeard, few players will bother to come to the leader's aid.
This means that Velen and Lor'themar are practically free kills, considering the sparsity of players in their cities and how much of a bother it is to go there. Lor'themar Theron has the benefit of a direct portal from Undercity right behind his chambers, however, which can result in rapid reinforcements. Fortunately, in The Burning Crusade and later in Wrath of the Lich King, there are portals directly to each city from Shattrath and Dalaran respectively, making it relatively easy to provide assistance where necessary. It should be interesting to see how players respond to city raids with Achievements in place.
Other Achievements
Some Achievements aren't directly related to world PvP but PvP in general, whether it happens in or out of the Battlegrounds. A simple one that any player can achieve is Duel-Licious, which is unlocked by winning a duel against another player, an easy enough task. The more interesting ones, however, are Know Thy Enemy for the Alliance and Horde, and That Takes Class. Both achievable inside the Battlegrounds, Know Thy Enemy is unlocked by landing a killing blow on each of the enemy races while That Takes Class can be achieved by getting a killing blow on each class. The former should be easy while the latter could take a bit more work as some classes are natural foils for others. Both Achievements don't require planning and should come naturally in the course of any player's PvP career.
Last but not least, there's the whimsical Make Love, Not Warcraft, which is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the eponymous South Park episode that featured World of Warcraft. Unlocked by using the /hug emote on a corpse before the enemy has released, this is one of the easiest Achievements to do. Simply spam a macro to targetlasttarget and hug as an opponent is about to die. Chances are, the /hug will land before the enemy releases her corpse, and zing! Free Achievement.
While the current list of PvP Achievements look good, I'm looking forward to a few more added in the future. Many Achievements are one-time affairs and don't encourage repeated PvP. We have yet to see Achievements related to the newest world PvP zone of Lake Wintergrasp, so that should be exciting to review when it finally comes.
Zach writes the PvP column The Art of War(craft) while debating on whether to level his characters in Beta to 80 or pursue the various PvP Achievements on live. On one hand, smashing hammers in Beta is fun as hell, on the other hand, headway needs to be made towards the 100k HK mark...

Right now it seems that world pvp is dead the only time i see it is when the alliance comes and attacks the crossroads every once in a while and even then it takes a while for the horde to responed, usually after the flight path guy gets killed and alot of lowbies start crying then the 70s show up to play hero..
Perhaps with acheivments there is hope.

The Crossroads and similarly leveled areas are actually quite good for testing your limits. One of the ways I've challenged myself with them is to wear only a pair of low-level vendor cloth pants and boots, and see how many kills I can get with my bare hands. Or, now that I have the Goblin Rocket Launcher, it's endlessly amusing to get the Horde's attention, then target the 70s with it before hiding til the cooldown is up. Keeps 'em busy, doesn't kill 'em, entertains most of the low-levels without killing the NPCs, and tests my ability to get about without getting caught when about ten level 70s are running about spamming AoEs and generally trying to guess where I'll show up next.
Plus, the casting time on the trinket means I have to pull it off without being spotted, for an even greater challenge.

Suppose it takes 2 raid groups to take down Thrall in Orgrimmar. Would both raids get credit or would just one of them?
Fugmug Sep 18th 2008 5:28PM
Well, since it *IS* Alliance, you might want to request accounting for 3-4 full raid groups on Thrall.

Am I missing something? Can I spend achievement points on anything? Lots of these are really cool and I'd love to do them but I still haven't seen what achievements "get" for me... titles? tabards? I'm sure not any epics.
I suppose the idea of grinding points I'm not even able to spend is a foreign concept for me in Warcraft....
Ves Sep 9th 2008 12:06AM
A blue confirmed a while ago that Achievement points cannot be exchanged for anything. You can only earn items from specific single achievements, of which I believe only one is currently implemented: Collect 50 pets, get a Skunk in your mailbox.
Ashley Sep 9th 2008 12:22AM
Blizz have said they wont be spendable, but you'll be able to get things depending on how many you have. So at 100 points you can get X, then with another 100 points (200) you can get Y.
I'm glad it works this way, you can climb up the ladder rather than save and save and save to get the best stuff first. Like what people do with Badges of Justice now. HEY - that would be a cool way for the wrath badges to work!
Robert W Sep 9th 2008 12:41AM
What I don't understand is what's the point of the "points". Like they could just as easily give the achievement without any points at all. Blizzard already said the points do nothing. You can't spend them on anything but you get a title, tabard, or pet for certain ones that you complete. However the points have no value at all, why even give them a value?

once upon a time, games were meant to be fun. they had high scores you got for achieving objectives in the game. you could show your high score to your friends, who would be in awe of what you managed to accomplish in the game.
think of achievements as the 2000's version of typing in your initials in an arcade. only, instead of only getting points for destroying Space Invaders, you get a thousand different mini-objectives that you can have fun accomplishing.
and if you think it's pointless, you can happily ignore it, because it won't negatively affect you in any way.
Metal_Gear Sep 9th 2008 7:06AM
Reminds me The Simpsons Game
"What was your High Score?"
"Games dont have High Scores anymore, we are given set objectives and we get an item upon completion like these 4 key cards"
"4 POINTS!? Thats a pretty crummy score!"
(Or something along those lines)
Never seen an arcade machines? They list the High Scores or quickest times. Same concept, different excecution.
On Topic: I dont mind World PVP, it seems to always happen when I log onto an alt anyway but I am PVE so these may give me a reason to join in.

Without points all achievements would be de facto equivalent -- killing Thrall would mean as much as collecting 50 pets or exploring the Wetlands. Since there are lots of achievements, and since achievements will be inspectable, the points will be a rough guide to how much a player has actually ... achieved, I guess.

PvP isnt dead on Twisting Nether. Whether its the female night elf and her two undead cronies in STV, or a group of 70 allies running through every other pvp zone, its pretty fun on that server.
Jeff Sep 9th 2008 12:26AM
I really like the fact that the reward for killing all of the city bosses is a title--either "of the Horde" or "of the Alliance". I see a lot of people going on world PvP raids for this reason alone.
kpt Sep 9th 2008 1:35AM
heres an idea that can knock out bird with one stones how about u give out certain titles than can only be obtain by getting a certain amount of achievements or by getting certain achievements that way everyone has a chance to earn a title by only the best or most dedicated will be able to achieve those hard to get achievements and titles
Arajal Sep 9th 2008 1:32AM
If Blizzard is going to promote City raiding and large battles, the least they could do it upgrade the amount of stress a server can take. The last large scale attack had me force-quitting the game and logging back on 10 min later just to rez. The lag was horrible.
Roxton Sep 9th 2008 3:48AM
Shut up, all you bloody whiners about "oh what's the point I don't get phat lootz whaaa whaaa". Sometimes you're not meant to play the game as though it's a second job, soley focussed on lewt, but for FUN! Remember that? Fun? Now shush.
Anyway, I think that these are great achievements to have, but I'm not looking forward to the raid ones being implemented - at the moment on my server the Horde outnumber Alliance 5:1, and normally what happens is that the Horde will get two 40-man raids together and zerg Stormwind and IF, totally pwning the eight Alliance in the city. The population imbalance is so bad that at one point they were able to camp outside of IF and SW, killing lowbies until a suitable ransom was paid to them via the neutral AH (if I remember correctly the final sum was about 300k gold). Last month we got re-valued to "recommended" as a realm, but the Horde numbers have actually increased. Go figure. Anyway, my point is that achievements such as these, while a good idea, are going to be merry hell for the smaller side on an imbalanced server. Perhaps it's time for Blizzard to do something about population imbalance?

They had better up the level of guards and faction bosses, they're solo-able at 70, let alone 80.
Roxton Sep 9th 2008 5:04AM
The guard level will be raised to 75, the same way that they were raised to 65 from 55 with the release of TBC. As for guards being soloable, yes, they should be. If every guard was a raid boss then capital raiding would be rendered impossible. It's they way that the guards endlessly respawn that gets you.
Axolotl Sep 9th 2008 4:53AM
On most servers it's alliance outnumbering Horde, it could have been the other way and how on earth can you kill lowbies in their starting zones unless they flag themselves/are stupid enough to attack horde?
It is possible to level to at least 30 without ever setting foot in a contested area (just do all quests for all factions, it'll take traveling, but you won't get ganked).
And what is to stop the Horde from attacking the lowbies on your server even after the payoff?

When one of our healers decided to leave the game recently, we decided his final raid should be done in style, and raided all 4 alliance cities, IF, SW, Exodar then Darnassuss. Took the Alliance a good 3-4 minutes to realise what was happening in IF, but once they did, we got butchered. Think it would need a very good pvp guild to pull this off on our server (or possibly not doing it at 8pm), but we aggroed the King at least. Also got done over in SW after corpse-hopping to the tram, but downed Prophet Velen no problem. Exodar is a ghost town and he hits like my little sister. Darnassus was annoying, we got the archdruid down then went for the priestess, but got done by defenders at 3% hp. The entire night was a hell of a lot of fun, got the whole server stirred up, counter raids, counter-counter raids, and definitely gave our favourite priest a proper send-off. Any idea whether our 1 kill of the night will be credited retroactively?
