Ghostcrawler's late night Paladin news
Ghostcrawler displays her dedication yet again as she popped up on a few of the Wrath of the Lich King Beta forums in the wee hours of the morning today. Or would that be late last night? What does 2 AM qualify as, again? Anyway! Ghostcrawler popped into the Paladin forums to check in with some concerned players, and brought some fun news. She says herself that it may not be 100% what Paladins want, but it should prove to be good stuff regardless. Let's dig right into it, shall we?From Ghostcrawler:
- We'd like to do something else with Kings. I don't know that a core ability is the answer, but burying it deep in Prot, when Prot paladins would just as soon play with BoSanc, doesn't feel great either.
- We'd like to mess around with the top 2 tiers of all 3 trees, still encouraging you to cross-spec a little, but making that initial bite into the upper tier more tasty instead of just an icky appetizer to get the what you really want down deeper
- I think Beacon of Light is starting to feel pretty good. It may be a little OP right now, but I think we can get it in a good place. (I'm sorry, but I don't know if you have the version I'm talking about or not.)
- We'd like to get Vengeance back to 3 stacks, because that just feels more fun than 2. I can almost assure you that it won't be at 15% total damage -- that is hugely generous for 5 talent points, and would normally be budgeted at more like 15 talent points. If I had to guess, it will end up at something like 3 talent points for 1 / 2 / 3% that stacks up to 3 times (so 9% at 3 stacks). That is still over-inflated for 3 talent points. I understand that your dps used to depend on Vengeance. We'll just have to buff it in other ways. Death Knights will get the exact same treatment, whatever it ends up being.
- JotW was changed to support the new party buff system and it needs to keep that role. That is one of the main reasons why a group would want to take a Ret pally over another dps class. I understand your mana was dependent on this ability. We'll just have to buff that in other ways as well. Having too many talents that just lower mana costs feel like a band-aid, so we'd rather not overdo that route. Instead we'd just like to make sure you have enough mana. The new Divine Plea is one mechanic here (it works more like Blood Rage than Evocate now), but it's not the only one.
- Deep Ret and deep Prot need 1 or 2 more cool talents. We'll carve out room by bundling or just swapping out some of the current talents.
The mana for Retribution Paladins thing we'll need to see in practice before we can form any opinion on it. Divine Plea being more like Bloodrage in the next beta build should help a lot, because channeling it was a lot of lost DPS time, not to mention interrupts on it. If you're going to make a melee class use mana, they shouldn't have to stop doing what they're doing to get their resources back. Ranged casters are one thing, they all fall victim to that, but can you picture a Warrior backing up from a boss, and instead of hitting the bad guy he beats himself over the head so he gets really, really angry? Maybe the Rogues should go drink a Red Bull for 4 seconds to get their Energy? Maybe those aren't perfect comparisons, but I think you see what I mean. In my opinion, it runs counter to how melee are played and ruins the feel of being in the thick of things. I'm sure not everyone agrees, but those are my thoughts on it.
Overall, while Ghostcrawler's information may not be perfectly in line with what Paladins want, they're still fun things and should prove interesting if implemented right.
Edit: Ghostcrawler is a gal and not a guy, so I have fixed my genderbending. Sorry, crablady!

Not that it's particularly important, but Ghostcrawler is a she, not a he.

AM normally signifies morning hours... seeing as thats when computers and electronic devices roll over to the next day after midnight... not that its all that important either.. 2am is just ridiculously early in the morning

paladins need more than love...
iliya Sep 9th 2008 1:30PM
More than love? How about a 6 month to year long dating relationship, with a proposal and engagement lasting just as long, with a marriage that lasts as long as the game lasts after all the times the developers have beaten down the class.

Try being a shaman.
Paladins do need love. They have been neglected for far too long. Maybe a present or two and some cuddle time will help.
Shaman are...
well, shaman just need to get to a battered spouse shelter.

I've been really impressed with GC. She (?) has been really active in the Paladin forums, at really unconventional hours.

2 AM??? ... 2AM is the best time of the evening!

Rogues would drink a "redbull," it it didn't start to become worthless for every level past 40. @ 80, thistle tea will reward 20 energy! Though if you want to, we'd gladly let you crank our energy bar up to a couple thousand and let burn through that.

"Though if you want to, we'd gladly let you crank our energy bar up to a couple thousand and let burn through that. "
Sure thing! We'll jack your energy bar up to 4k. But all of your abilities now cost 20x as much, and it takes a good 5 seconds to regen 100 energy.

GC is mostly my hero, and not just for the Paladin changes. She seems to be one of the best CMs we've had in a while. Not only is she very informative, but she quashes QQing fairly quickly. It's like she played the game BEFORE she worked there, or something. ;-)
But really, I'm super excited about the 'deep prot' changes. I would absolutely love to see something we can use against casters; not necessarily an interrupt, but a distance closer would be fantastic. Just something. In my experience, caster mobs are just a pain to control.

Just so you know, Ghostcrawler is a developer, not a CM. She is one of the people actively working on the classes for LK.
Clasifyd Sep 9th 2008 12:26PM
Good to know; I just assumed by all the 'Community Management' she was doing, she was a full fledged CM. ;-)
But in all seriousness, it's great to see a developer looking into the community. As a developer myself, I know it's much easier to figure out what your client is expecting when you talk directly to them, instead of it being screened through a liaison of some sort. I certainly appreciate her efforts. Kudos to GC, once again.
zach Sep 9th 2008 11:17AM
damn. I was asleep when all this happened! Blast. Nice work, alex!
Yanel Sep 9th 2008 11:20AM
At least she's openly communicating about changes, plans, their outlook, etc. Wish the priest liason (can't remember their name offhand) just gives us stuff like "No that's fine" "we're not changing that" or "Hm you make a good point, maybe look for that in the NEXT (read not WotLK) expansion".
Perderedeus Sep 9th 2008 8:24PM
I was already looking forward to reviving my Ret paladin... now, even more so.
I hope the hunter class receives this sort of attention. GC has been in their beta forums on and off, but never has gone over anything this extensive. The BM tree suffers from that "ho hum" form of uninteresting talents as well. The other trees are in a better state, but could always use a look as well.
iliya Sep 9th 2008 11:49AM
I personally found them to be lacking in definiative answers to the problems plaguing the class.
And, Alex, you should know better. Warriors are going to get everything and paladins are gonna get the scraps. Haven't the past four years taught you anything? Oh wait, your first paladin was a blood elf, of course you don't.
Alex Ziebart Sep 9th 2008 11:59AM
Nice try. My Paladin is, and always has been, Human.
iliya Sep 9th 2008 12:13PM
Fair enough, I must have been thinking of Zach. Either way, I just get the feeling that most of the posters on WoWinsider are fairly oblivious to the problems of the class.
iliya Sep 9th 2008 12:27PM
And yet, you write stuff like this?
http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/03/08/hybrid-theory-what-can-i-do-part-2/
The tankadins are still waiting for their apology, by the way.
Alex Ziebart Sep 9th 2008 12:50PM
The tankadins interpreted what I said incorrectly, and rejected my apology.
If you want to keep your panties in a bunch over it, that's your deal.
