Where are you heading once Wrath hits?
In an earlier post I spent some time wondering if it might be a good idea to level a Shaman alongside the new fleet of Death Knights guaranteed to appear once Wrath hits. A lot of commenters were of the opinion (correct, I think) that the desire to avoid hugely crowded areas is probably better served by leveling an alt to 58-60 and sticking it in Outland. The alt can then await the surge of Death Knights who decide to continue leveling, and who should have some experience with its playstyle by then. While I'm still most likely to level my main to 80 once the expansion hits, having an alt in a less crowded area of the game is pretty appealing. For all I know, the Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord will be packed to the scuppers too. I play on a laptop with a wireless connection, so my gameplay tends to suffer badly when the area I'm in resembles Los Angeles during rush hour. Avoiding overcrowded areas is no small thing. My realm's considered medium population, but we've still got enough people that, if even 10% of the population typically online at server high time decides to roll a Death Knight once Wrath is released, Eastern Plaguelands is going to be in total gridlock for a while. The same thought occurred to a few friends, who wondered if they might be better off spending a week or two on low-level alts in an empty Azeroth while waiting for the furor to die down. With that said, that's not an ideal option if your guild wants to start raiding as early as possible, or if you just don't want to be left behind by guildies leveling to 80.
I'm genuinely curious. Let's say you've bought the expansion, installed it, and you're at the character selection screen on your usual realm with the option to create a Death Knight, hit your main, or head to an alt. Given your own personal circumstances, which do you pick, and where are you going in those first few hours?
| Head to the Eastern Plaguelands and level a Death Knight. | |
|---|---|
| Level my main to 80. | |
| Reroll. | |
| Spend some quiet time leveling an alt in Azeroth. |

Leveling a death knight won't be bad as it's an instance and has a limit of 40 characters.
I'd say shoot for that if you're having problems.
Orbit Sep 9th 2008 11:36PM
Seeing as how it's not an instance, is the limit really 40?
Bootsanator Sep 10th 2008 2:40AM
Devs (or whoever those blue people were) have said that it's not an Instance, it's Phased. You know how you can't see other non-phased people when you do the mana cell quest in northern blade's edge, but you can see the phased people? Same thing.

Totally agree.
I am rolling a hunter right now. He is level 16 orc and I think everyone is doing the same. I have seen like 10 hunters in my area around my level. The crossroads is packed again and Barrens chat is alive and well. I think there is a mad rush to 70 happening right now. So soon after the expansion goes live all these new 70s will just keep questing to 80 without having to stop off an do instances.

It would be quite peaceful leveling, so few players. Zen like.
Or will the expansion bring new people? That would suck.

Now there's a question. WoW got a pretty nice bump in numbers when BC was released. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Wrath...

Peaceful? Imagine a billion death knights emerging from plaguelands with no trade skills. Pretty much all low level zones will be chaos. Not to mention trade chat spam with "zomg dk r overpowerd".
If you want peace and quiet (and I might fit into this category) some of the zones like Azshara will probably still be relatively quiet.
I'm not sure I can survive leveling without info from thotbot so I may actually hold off on doing expansion content for a week or two.

Ughh the last thing I want is to be in a crowed area where you have to wait on mob respawns only to have them snipered by a rouge or a mage I have a nice wee gnome mage hunter and a paladin who need the attention more that a DK or my Rogue
Then again... Fishin in the Forlon Cavern in Ironforge sounds like a good idea too
futurebiblehero Sep 10th 2008 1:08AM
Generally, Rogues aren't sniping your kills. If there's one class in the entire game that has their killing plans foiled again and again by just about everyone else in the damned game, it's the Rogue.
I can understand the Rogue hate, but come on. Even Shadowstep isn't going to remotely balance out the massive game of tag going on with the ranged classes.
Allison Robert Sep 10th 2008 1:46AM
Futurebiblehero, I encounter the same problem in crowded areas while grinding as a kitty. I don't think most players purposely steal mobs I'm after (I mean, half the time they can't even see me), but it can be a real nuisance to be a melee class dependent on stealth with lots of ranged DPS grinding nearby.
Dranaerys Sep 10th 2008 8:26AM
@futurebiblehero:
Throwing Knives. Works all the time. I got tired in beta having all my mobs stolen by people, so I tag 'em with a throwing weapon (faster than bow, gun or xbow).
Of course, this means I dont get to play my class as intended and miss out on starting a fight with an opener, but well, its either that or spend 30 minutes on a 5 minute quest. :p

I plan on leveling my Shaman to 80 so that I can start checking out Naxx, get settled away. Then as probably everyone else, checking out a DK.
Eternalpayn Sep 9th 2008 11:10PM
From my beta experience, I can't wait to play a death knight! I haven't hardly touched my main because I've spent so much time playing my new guy. However, I will need to level up my rogue for raids...
roguedubb Sep 9th 2008 11:16PM
I'll be shooting it up in 10-19 WSG with my new Hyena and enjoying Tendon Rip.
Jack Kelly Sep 9th 2008 11:18PM
I'm going to head straight to Durotar with my DK to start leveling mining to 300.
I already have enough ore and bars to get him to 300+ Blacksmithing but I'd rather avoid the rush a tad and at least be able to mine along the way in Outland and then Northrend.
Lanth Sep 9th 2008 11:34PM
Currently not playing, but I'll come back a month or so after Wotlk hits, so I can dodge the massively overcrowded starting zones.
Allison Robert Sep 10th 2008 1:49AM
I started playing in BC about two weeks after the expansion went live (and leveled a Tauren when most people on my realm Hordeside had rolled a BE) so yep, I've been there.
Logan Sep 9th 2008 11:41PM
Expansions only come out every so often. The over-crowded new zones are part of the excitement and experience for me. I'll be right in the middle of it, and later I can go, "Man, do you guys remember when Wrath came out and everything was swamped??" You'll all be stuck going, "Nah, I didn't bother this time." :P
prudychick Sep 9th 2008 11:45PM
Right now I can't wait to get to go to Crystal Song. It's so pretty.
Aimee Sep 9th 2008 11:51PM
Hmm I know I will create my Death Knight first she's either going to be Undead or a Blood Elf. Then I might get to work leveling my Horde Lock or Horde Priest first lol. Then when all the DK craziness has passed get started leveling my Death knight.
