Where are you heading once Wrath hits?
In an earlier post I spent some time wondering if it might be a good idea to level a Shaman alongside the new fleet of Death Knights guaranteed to appear once Wrath hits. A lot of commenters were of the opinion (correct, I think) that the desire to avoid hugely crowded areas is probably better served by leveling an alt to 58-60 and sticking it in Outland. The alt can then await the surge of Death Knights who decide to continue leveling, and who should have some experience with its playstyle by then. While I'm still most likely to level my main to 80 once the expansion hits, having an alt in a less crowded area of the game is pretty appealing. For all I know, the Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord will be packed to the scuppers too. I play on a laptop with a wireless connection, so my gameplay tends to suffer badly when the area I'm in resembles Los Angeles during rush hour. Avoiding overcrowded areas is no small thing. My realm's considered medium population, but we've still got enough people that, if even 10% of the population typically online at server high time decides to roll a Death Knight once Wrath is released, Eastern Plaguelands is going to be in total gridlock for a while. The same thought occurred to a few friends, who wondered if they might be better off spending a week or two on low-level alts in an empty Azeroth while waiting for the furor to die down. With that said, that's not an ideal option if your guild wants to start raiding as early as possible, or if you just don't want to be left behind by guildies leveling to 80.
I'm genuinely curious. Let's say you've bought the expansion, installed it, and you're at the character selection screen on your usual realm with the option to create a Death Knight, hit your main, or head to an alt. Given your own personal circumstances, which do you pick, and where are you going in those first few hours?
| Head to the Eastern Plaguelands and level a Death Knight. | |

| Level my main to 80. | |
| Reroll. | |
| Spend some quiet time leveling an alt in Azeroth. |

I've got a mage sitting at 60 waiting for the expansion, and I'll make a DK, get through the beginning mess and start leveling his herbalism. Manly Orc DK picking flowers for hours. I am a bringer of death, and lovely flower arrangements. But, I'm definitely not going to head into the frosty north except at 3am when all the kiddies are safely tucked in bed. I hated first few days of BC "you gonna kill that? you gonna mine that?". UGH

I'm genuinely surprised to see that the vast majority of people are planning on sticking with their mains up to 80 - with any luck the choice of two different starting areas in Northrend, with the additional lure of DK's in EPL, with even things out a bit zone-wise. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a pretty clever design decision on Blizzard's part. Although I'm quite sure I'll still be lagging my way into the lovely and scenic graveyards of Northrend either way....

They asked you?, shit man thats rare, unfortunately alot of the people that inhabit my server are obnoxious bastards
kunukia Sep 10th 2008 6:44AM
Yah, they ASK you?? Astonishing! I would let them have it, as a reward for asking, haha.

I need to hit 80 fast or I can't raid. If I can't raid I may as well not play since it's by far my favorite aspect of the game.
After the initial race to 80 (where I will try to stay ahead of the leveling curve) I'll either come back to one of my other 70s or roll a DK if my guild doesn't already have a ton of them.
Pre-wrath I've been leveling a ton of alts and may actually switch mains when Wrath comes out. It'll be to a toon that's already 70 though if I do.

My paladin just hit 60, and since it seems likely they'll be the anti-DK (or at least very strong) I may level him to 80 before my rogue.

So is 'to play WAR', not a valid answer?
Kevin Sep 10th 2008 12:50AM
don't think so. lol
Allison Robert Sep 10th 2008 1:56AM
Totally valid, but I forgot about including an option for a fifth choice.
We would also have accepted: "Quitting to spend more time with the ferrets," "Joining the local apocalyptic cult," or "De-worming orphans in Somalia."

The same can probably be said for all realms. Makes me wonder what will happen to this game once WotLK is released. I wonder if Blizzard has thought this whole thing out.

I'll stick it out by farming, leveling my bank alt, leveling up Engineering... Hanging out with Haggle. Pulling teeth. I've got a Tolstoy anthology laying around here somewhere, maybe I'll read that. I'll be doing anything but dealing with the chaos of those starter zones on a heavily queued server.
I have a lot of enthusiasm for WotLK and feel that I'd lose every bit of it by taking part in that initial arms race. I'll wait.

i'll be spending most of my time on my main (hunter :D) again. first thing i'll do is tame a freakin moth for my main pet. then head off to northrend. later i'll go get a silithid and wasp. maybe a rhino. and let's not forget one of those polar bear cubs.
Raze Sep 10th 2008 1:07AM
Exploring Northrend with my Priest and Hunter for the first time, hands down the very most enjoyable part of the game. I'll finally be able to exprience the Alliance side of things if I'm quick enough to level the Priest.

Spec Resto, stand next to the enterance to Hellfire Chasm and spam "Healer: 15g/run"
smcn Sep 10th 2008 2:03AM
If you've got a decently geared healer and tank you can skip Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord entirely and spend a few hours chain-running Azjol'Nerub to hit 71 and start questing in Dragonblight.
Azri Sep 10th 2008 1:54AM
Surprisingly low % of people answering Death Knight. Makes me think the how OMG DROWNING IN DKS scare is unwarranted. Which for the most part I always thought it was anyway. haha.
Axxam Sep 10th 2008 7:50AM
Well if the % from the poll reflects what the servers will do, there will be 16.9% Death Knights on the server... which is more than the current highest class in WoW (Hunter, 15%) http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php
Tenchan Sep 10th 2008 2:48AM
Since my DK is to replace my Warrior Main, leveling it is naturally the first thing to do, as it will take me longest.
Zakk Sep 10th 2008 3:03AM
First thing I'm gonna do is play with the DK customization options. When I find out exactly what kinda hair/face/skin tone I want, I'll go back, delete my level 1 name reservation toon, and make my DK. Then I'll try not to touch him until my Paladin is level 80.
Evi Sep 10th 2008 1:11PM
That's exactly what I'll be doing. I might zone in just to take a quick look and make sure I am satisfied with her appearance. But my main will be my priority, so my guild can start raiding ASAP.
